Thanks for sharing this. I filmed this for a BBC Interactive TV app which allowed you to change the music Gilbert and George were dancing to. Which seems to be exactly what has been done to this footage all over UA-cam.
No idea why this has turned up in my feed now. Have to say though it looks as fresh as if it were posted yesterday. Love Gilbert & George. Their new work is a delight.
gilbert and george and renowned for their "art for all". i suppose if something is funny and lots of ppl enjoy watching it, then they can call it a success for their art.
@@kriskauf3980 Bend it 180 and naturally you end up with the symbolism of their tautology...just as epic, in any case, and no less meaningful. Now discuss.
Gilbert: I am always amazed at the number of times we are asked: "Where do you get your shits from?" George: Of course, we now turn around and say "Harrods."
Hugleikur Dagsson trouble now is we have celebrity 'artists' and whatever they do is automatically given value. A prime example is Tracy Emin, who was already a celeb on the London art scene when she 'created'' her infamous bed installation, although she now says it is in fact a painting(!?). Any unknown artist who created exactly the same installation wouldn't have been given the time of day - it has no objective value only subjective. We are now being told that she is this wonderful painter and in fact, she always saw herself as a painter (!). The only problem is she is objectively absolutely talentless with a brush. Check out her painting. It's embarrassingly bad and not in a good way. The artist/ critic/ gallery world has become incestuous with careers and profits to maintain. As for the they-made-it-you-didn't justification I remember watching one celeb artist proudly showing his latest work, when an interviewer, also an artist, said he had done exactly the same ten years before. To which the artist retorted, ' But I made it !' The 'I' being the important thing. I myself am the product of art school, St Martin's like Gilbert and George and I now would never call myself an artist. The term has become debased. Maybe I am a non artist and anything I declare not to be art, isn't ! It's taking the readymade to its logical conclusion. I do find Gilbert and Georges stuff jolly but they're from a more innocent less contrived age. Everything now is too self consciously aware.
This contemporary repeat only goes to show it's absurd, bemusing, ludicrous, funny, ironic - it's timeless. As an artiist and former lecturer in Fine Art and Graphics, they are posh or at least the Brit is the Italian I'm not quite sure. I've followed there antics and they still amuse me in a visual way.
Jesus people this is meant to be comical, lighten up. It's exactly what you're seeing: two gay men intentionally doing a bad job of getting their groove on. Go ahead and read a bit about what Gilbert and George represented. They pushed the limits of what society considers "acceptable" and "proper" and "appealing" in all sense of the words. I agree that most modern art is crap, and so is this but only in the most literal sense. If you're curious go ahead and google "Naked Shit Pictures (1994)".
i saw the original film of this last weekend at the milwaukee art museum. weirdly hypnotic. i find it odd that they chose to use cuts in this one - the original was one locked down shot. go see the exhibit. its a mindfuck and i mean that as a compliment
@barneycoles If you sell it to people as art, basically everything can be art nowadays - even though I prefer sticking to the classic definitions of art, like classic paintings and such.
@ElectronicNoiseDept um well I'm currently an arts student finishing my masters so yes I am doing something about it and not just complaining thanks...
@elchafa I know both artists you mentioned and their work as well. I respect "new" forms of art and know how much they influenced the world of art, but honestly: They are not my cup of tea. But I guess everyone likes diffent forms of art, so as long as we keep a certain amount of respect towards other artists we probably don't even like, it's fine for me.
The video shoot took 9 weeks to complete, costing a record £800,000 for the time, and was filmed on location in the South of France. However, despite its overblown production it has compromised none of its artistic message and stands up as an important and relevant piece of work today.
great dance of a super couple at a rather pathetic -zorba alike/bouzouki tuned- song "bend it" sung by "Dave Dee, Dozy, Beak, Mich & Tich" omg what a band name
@Smyshies Well, my definition of art covers not only a creative idea, but also effort. Painting a canvas completely blue isn't art for me. I know that art changes over time, but I think without passion, work that you can actually see in the artwork and effort it isn't art. Everyone can create art, but "classic" art like a painting of michelangelo is something not everyone can accomplish. I wanna be stunned saying "woah, that guy sure can paint/draw/sculpt/whatever", if that makes sense to you.
Oh !!!!! that was sooooo funny. Gilbert and George rule, they are the best............... Or was it just a load of Bullshit. Yep it was Bullshit alright.
they're completely bonkers and wonderful ! i was hoping they would get the chance to design the great britain olympic-wear for 2012 but alas no. i suppose a red, white and blue penis design might of raised a few eyebrows !
Gilbert & George, "Performance Artistes?" Gilbert & George, "Singing Sculptures?" This is just pretentious crap. I mean these two Euro dolts allegedly "dancing," not the song itself, which is great. Listen to and watch the only legitimate videos of this song, by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich. If you want a comic angle on the song, Barbara Eden (TV's "Jeannie" of "I Dream Of Jeannie") at least sings her own version, and in not a bad voice, either.
I heard somone describe them as a "couple of bank clerks going through a mental breakdown"
YES THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT IS!
"The rude old men of British art"

😂
The first time I saw this when Gilbert and George showed it during a talk they gave at my art college, about 50 years ago.
The existential implications of this performance are incalculable.
Nah! It's just a couple of "benders".
This is ludicrous pretence!
Gilbery & George are legends! Our tutors decided to show this in a Critical Studies lecture at my university and everyone was crying with laughter!
This is now how I’m going to dance in the club with my mates
I love this so much ❤ never used to like this song, but I have been converted. Such fab clothes too.😍
I'm glad I'm not tripping whilst watching this for fear of subsequent years of therapy
Why do I find this compelling viewing, brilliantly eccentric.
I hope I can thrust like that when I'm 60...
I'm 60 and just tried this. It was not a pretty sight.
Seriously their art and humor is brilliant! Ill never get over this!

+Nina Wardrop hi Nina - excellent clip! We want to show it in a film programme - any ideas who we should approach to get permission?

Absolutely brilliant 😂
National treasures.
Long live Gilbert & George!
Is it art? Is it comedy? Yes.
i love gilbert and george.
I imagined Borat jumping in and saying: very nice, I too like disco dancing!
I've met them on several occasions, charming couple!
This is the first time I've seen these guys 😂 years ago Alexei sayle did a parody of them which was very funny 😊
This is monumentaly brilliant.
still great after so many years
Gilbert and George are awesome

this is amazing
The tautology of their symbolism reached epic proportions with this performance!
How so?

The Morecambe and Wise of modern art.

i love their art :)
Funny thing is, that's exactly how I dance.
god, that is so funny. gilbert and george rule!!!
I used to work at the TATE and I can assure you that it was awful listening it every 10 minutes
Now i like it though
Last time I met G & G
they asked me for a couple of G & T's.
Great artists! There's an exhibition from 'em in Brussels @ Bozar, don't miss it!
Ah... The true source of Jedward's dance inspiration finally revealed!
Gilbert: I am always amazed at the number of times we are asked: "Where do you get your shits from?"
George: Of course, we now turn around and say "Harrods."
G+G rock. Keep it going lads.
Why go to therapy 😂
Just put this on
And don’t jump
😂😂
tout simplement génial.
Futurama is art. thanks
This is what you get when Mr. Bean becomes an artist

well i just love art, really
this makes me want to be old.
Ahah f'n great :D
A little fun performance art.
Do I take it that Gilbert and George are an ongoing work of art that is unfinished until both of them are dead?
And perhaps not even then.
epic dance ever
Futurama brought me here.
Great advertisement for Iphone 6!
fuck off
It also works surprisingly well with Aphex Twin's ambient works
We should be thankful they kept their clothes on

In some shots they looked a little like Morecambe and Wise..
yes man you should film your self walking to your car door and class that as art, or you can also stay the same and class that as art too
