Vance isn't claiming to be Appalachian, which he isn't because he wasn't raised here, but he is claiming to be descended from Appalachian roots, which he clearly is. Any of us Appalachian kids from the 80s and 90s knew relatives just like Vance. 1st generation Buckeye kids who would come down to Kentucky a few times a year. They were still Buckeyes, but at least a little Hillbilly would rub off on them.
I am from an Appalachian family and can show you four generations in one cemetery (my parents are in a cemetery a few miles away, where my mother came from) but my ancestors were from close enough to the Ohio Valley that they were farmers and a little more prosperous than some. My grandfather might have been underground, but coincidentally as he had a business hauling house coal. If not I was the first to go underground a lot. As a geologist I was in a lot of mines in Greenbrier, Payette, Raleigh, Wyoming, and McDowell Counties collecting samples of met coal for the state. In twenty-four inches the length of your thighs becomes important as does a soft mudstone bottom. The tracks of the machinery gives you a couple of extra inches. When it first came out I regarded “Hillbilly Elegy” as airing dirty laundry, but have since decided as Vance’s personal story he is entitled to tell it. Liberals loved and fawned over “Hillbilly Elegy” at first because it made them feel superior to the Hillbillys and if anything they love to feel superior. Consider, though, other achievers from Appalachia such as Rocket Boy Homer Hickham and test pilot Chuck Yeager. I personally remember a farm boy, brother of a classmate, who sometimes showed up at school smelling of manure from doing his chores before school and not having time to clean up. He was a good student, though and ended up teaching Biochemistry at Columbia University for an entire career!
I just read a thing on Quora and it was this 50 year old woman who hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. She said most ppl will tell you that they did it when in truth very few have made it all the way. She said by the time she was done she had lost every one of her toenails but she made it to the end and it was a very interesting (short) story.

Mr Shane, I am glad you brought this up. It so happened that I read JD’s book back in the spring and I have personally never found a book so relatable., for reasons I won’t enumerate here. But I believe that JD is deeply rooted in Appalachia, as am I-and I have never lived there a day in my life. (Wish I did! ) My parents were from deep in the coal fields of WV , as were their ancestors going back into the 1700’s and forting up in western Virginia colony blockhouses. If you are familiar with it, The second verse of Readin’, Ritin’, Route 23 was my life growing up. The culture I was born into was Midwest Industrial, ‘Detroit Rock city’, but inside my home the culture was Appalachia. The manner of speaking, the cultural norms, the foodways, the traditions, the lens through which life was viewed…. We’re your cultural kin! Don’t discount us because of the diaspora that our parents or grandparents found it necessary to be part of. A lot of us kids have always felt like square pegs in a round hole in the places we grew up in; we felt acutely the loss of kinship and so it’s sad to be rejected as, “not one of us.”Some may not claim us, but we claim you and we’re proud of our roots. We perhaps didn’t grow up in the geographical area, but Appalachia and everything that Name-place implies was written on the geography of our hearts. As to the hillbilly moniker: from your perspective down there, there is some nuance about who is what. But in the midwestern cities where we grew up, no such differentiation exists I’m sorry to say. One thing was equivalent to the other to some people, and they would call you both things if they detected a southern accent. Leaving hearth and home was hard on everyone I’ve ever known who left the hills for work in the cities, and they all struggled emotionally in some small way or another-and many like my own parents moved back “down home” as soon as they retired. Anyway, always happy to see you and Melody pop up in my feed. I hope that baby, mama and daddy and the big kids are doing great! ❤ Blessings to you!
I was raised in Harlan Co Ky as Appalachian and Hillbilly as it gets, I was raised by my G-Grandparents in a dirt poor environment picked up coal along the railroad and river, stood in the cheese line for a block of cheese, worked in the garden milked the cow killed chickens and hogs, this was to survive because what my grandfather didn't make enough in the mines to survive, I joined the Marines when i turned 17 during the vietnam war and then worked in the coal mines for several years then used the GI bill to go to school, I was successful in my career but had to leave Harlan for Va, this is very similar to JD Vances story so I don't care where he's from he's an Appalachian Hillbilly in my book, get past the first 2 words and see the content support JD.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind about J D Vance’s book “ Hillbilly Elegy”. First, the book is primarily his personal autobiography from birth to his mid twenties and is about 2/3 of the book. He is telling the story of his life in a dysfunctional, unstable family. His story is the story of many people in every nook and cranny and subculture of this country. It is not unique to Appalachia as a whole and definitely not unique to our neck of the woods referred to as Central Appalachia or the Appalachian coalfields. The remaining 1/3 of the book is based on his assessment of the impact of change to life that the majority of Americans, especially the middle class, felt when the source of employment and income moved from an industrial/manufacturing economy to a high tech/service based economy. Major economic shifts affect every aspect of our lives from social and political views to our hopes and dreams for our children and future generations. Vance is of Appalachian descent and is two generations removed from his grandparent’s cultural heritage . His own children will know they are of Appalachian descent, yet may never experience being Appalachian like descendants whose families remain in region and learn to value Appalachian heritage and traditions. I , personally have many cousins who grew up in other regions of country because their parents relocated to those areas to better themselves economically. They visited “back home “ a few times a year but their lifestyle and cultural values were more reflective of where they lived and their Appalachian connection became weaker with each new generation.

Good to see you, Shane! And hello to Melody and Baby Girl! I read Hillbilly Elegy back when it first came out. A friend who's a librarian recommended it. There's no doubt that Vance is smart, the book is pretty well written, and it seemed clear that he was positioning himself for his mission in life even back then. What bothered me was that he seemed to throw his mother (who did have some emotional issues, no doubt) under the bus, but as I recall, gave his Dad a pass for the same negative behavior. (LIke Vance's Mom, I too am an R.N. and it's not a degree that is simply handed to you regardless of low levels of effort or intelligence. I live in Ohio as well, so it's not like I've never seen or lived in the same environment that he grew up in. I think we want to keep in mind too, that Vance went to Yale. Ivy League schools do have an effect on people, I believe. Then he went into Wall Street type of finance, rubbing elbows with people who regard making $2,000,000/year as being "low income." I'm not trying to tell anyone how to vote, but I would just ask people to read the book and use their own common sense!
I really appreciate your insight and experience and thank you so much for commenting. That is a whole lot to consider but you make a very strong case. It makes me want to read the book even more.
Great show, Shane. I'm not sure about JD yet. I don't know enough about him. Like a lot of people I watched the movie after the announcement. Ball State University in Muncie, IN did a study of people who were recruited in Fentress County, Tennessee to come up to Indiana and work in factories around Muncie and Anderson, IN. The people as I was acquainted with them still retained a definite Southern character, at least to my Yankee perception. They were good people who did their jobs and made their towns good places. As the factory jobs left over the years, a lot of those folks fell on hard times. I would suspect that a lot of these folks went back to the places their grandparents had left because of better prospects.

That is such a weird and sad phenomenon I’ve seen too. Too many people love to see others fail or are only happy when you’re doing ok - but not as good as them. Sad way to live.
It is not just this area by any means. I can only say that people I associate with love nothing more than to see our neighbors succeed. Not about me but I am from Beckley graduated from an Ivy league school as well (Columbia) we are not as uncommon as you think. I have had great happiness from friends and business associates. Just saying, you do realize that WV has more higher learning availability per Capita than anywhere else in the US at my last checking roughly 3 years ago. Cheers
I love JD Vance since I read his book 8 years ago. By the way, watching you on this video you look like JD Vance or maybe he looks like you!!! 👍
I’m ok with JD as long as he is for the American workers.
@@larfybuckner8619
Yeah... And he's also for 24/7 electronic surveillance, totally traceable digital currency, no Second Amendment, making the gubmint even more powerful than it already is... And a litany of other unconstitutional things.
Please take the time and REALLY look into exactly who it was that gave this guy his ride to the top...
A hint: Souros and his gang.
@@slicksnewonenow I understand what you’re saying. Donald Trump is pro second amendment and he does not like the digital currency. I’m not sure what you mean by the 24 seven surveillance though. I have no choice but to vote for Donald Trump because I was alive during his last presidency and I seen the price of gas drop which drop the price of everything. I remember what the interest rates were because I bought a house at the time at 2 1/2% interest. I remember we did not go to any wars and in fact we we’re in good standings with most countries that are important. I have no choice but to vote for Donald Trump regardless of his VP.
He's definitely Israel first.

Great show Shane. I was surprised that Trump named Vance as his running mate. But he is growing on me. He is a smart person and hopefully will help lead us to better lives in the future. Hey, tell Melody I said hi. Thanks, Boyd.
I will tell Melody, thank you!
How is he going help run the country is my concern, my family's been called everything in both good and bad light, Hillbilly is one of the nicer things they've called us. Im not as concerned about the name callin as I am about the next generation being able to buy a house and groceries at the same time. When things improve, I'll get a bit pissed about that kind of stuff.
Ain’t that the truth
Hello Shane. I must have missed the baby news. Congratulations to you and Melody! I haven't read the book or viewed the movie. Coming from a family of coal miners, i am like you, a bit claustrophobic. Dont even like crowded elevators, ha.
Maybe JD identifies as an Appalachian. 😂
😂
Time will tell! LOVE THE DOOBIE BROTHERS
Yes, they were so great!
I like this "Hillbilly Talk' format! I don't follow politics or mainstream media, so I had never heard of Vance until his VP announcement. From what I've read on 1440 News & Epoic Times, he sounds like a good fit as Trump's VP. BTW....I miss seeing Ms Melody!
Yes, Melody is soooo busy these days that she seldom sees daylight. Bless her heart, she’s such a great mom though
Harris 2024
In my part of WV we're called hoopies. That's a hillbilly that can read
I don't normally get involved with anything political but I know this man's family to well.his great grandparents where friend's of my family and his grandma's bother was a good friend of mine. They where definitely not White trash but respected and even a important part of the community his great grandfather was the county jailer and his relatives are all over the hills of eastern Kentucky and if he is half the man his relatives are we have a great VP.and yes he is a hillbilly and I can say that with no malice.
Imposter. Politics aside, Trump and Vance act like 12 yr old kids with mental issues
.
I’m a JD Vance fan. 🇺🇸🇺🇸2024. 😊😊
Your great sorry about the divorce. Stings for a while. I know, west Virginia mike .
OHIO is not Appalachia.
Kentucky where his people are from and parts of Ohio is included in Appalachia.
Shew, you’ll start WWIII with that comment lol. People get fighting mad one way or the other about that topic.
@@julieweathers1139 Hollywood is in the USA but I would not call those people Americans.
His grandparents were originally from Breathitt County Kentucky and apparently he spent a lot of time there during the summers.
A lot of people from Kentucky moved to Ohio I know a guy from Ohio his granddaddy is a banjo picker came from a small eastern Kentucky community and they all have a southern accent.
I might be related to him through the Blantons
Go Trump! He has to win, or we are screwed!
We will be if fat boy wins

lol, no, but you’re about the 3rd or 4th person to ask me that. I just read someone say he has a punchable face and I hope that doesn’t apply to me lol
@@shaneandmelody everybody has a punchable face. I like Vance just for suggesting they disband the ATF. His memoir also reminds me of my own upbringing and he makes a good point about how maligned poor people are by the coastal urban elites.

If Vance can help Trump's agenda and help put him back in the White House then I'll be a fan but I would have preferred Vivek
I like Vance, but Vivek could have helped Trump with visuals for modern identity politics. 🙄
@@greatmusicfan57 absolutely 💯
I think Vivek is the most intelligent person in politics today. He’s a bit bombastic and you can tell he’s quite a fan of himself but, man, is he sharp. He would never get caught without a good comeback.
So bringing back 1933 German politics to the US is okay with you
0:37 Melody and I* smh I expected better of you
J.D. Vance is you with lighter hair
I will be honest with y'all. If certain people take office, (Camel Head), MOST of us will need to aspire to be "Hillbillies."" We will need to Fish, Hunt, Garden, and Can so we can EAT! Learn these skills now. Put back food and water. I respect your culture, Shane. Y'all are the backbone of America. If you knew my whole background, you would have one heck of a laugh!❤🇺🇲

That's the common misconception.
The ugly truth is that if THEY wanted to, THEY could just taint the water supply and end all of us within about two weeks.

God, Trump, and Vance. The REAL winning ticket. 💯🙏🇺🇸
Appalachian or not. It's really "What a fool believes" ;-) And he really doesn't. He's just trying (vainly) to advance his own career
Love your channel Shane ! No idea who JD vance is and it won't matter as if they get elected he would be Trumpy's vice pencident ... LOL ! 😁 Keep up the great work !
lol, good point, thank you!
I'm in New Jersey and know very little about JD Vance, mostly what I've heard since Trump chose him as running mate. He seems like a good guy. I know the hosts on "The View" (I think) were trashing him. I heard he was a never-Trumper, but changed his mind on all that. I've heard him speak since he was chosen to run with Trump and I like him.
