One of the best songs I've ever heard. Everything from the lyrics, intonation, and emotion put into this song, it is pure and beautiful just as music should be.
I saw Bon Iver live last August in Germany. It was awesome! He asked us, what sort of beer is the best in Germany and stuff like this. Btw the show was awesome!
CAN'T COMPARE THIS RAW EMOTION WITH BIRDY. SORRY BUT YOU JUST CAN'T! Discovered Bon Iver years ago and have been inlove ever since. No cover will be as good as the original!!!
currently obsessed with this song and this version (live)! Such poetry and passion. REAL music...oh yeahhhhh. You should see him do "I can't make you love me".
Im going to admit that I did say I liked birds version better a few days ago, but this has really grown on me big time and I have a listen to this every day now, and don't even listen to her version anymore.
Here is my explanation of the difference between versions. My girlfriend loves Birdy's cover. And I love the original. My explanation to her is this: the young girl's version is very beautiful and she is obviously talented. However, the original has the force and power that makes the song four levels ahead.
I like how hes up there literally trying to Express that his heart has been shattered and theres a ton of 30 year old women in the crowd that are just like "how cute"
@johanhatehippies It looks like it's made by a company called 'National'. They produce resonators, if not then I don't know, but the headstock looks typical of National guitars.
Just so everyone knows... he's an indie musician, not a hipster musician. Bon Iver means good winter. His real name is Justin Vernon. He did For Emma, Forever Ago all by himself with his own instruments (except for his brother's drum kit). He was popular after he won a grammy, but he was popular and loved in the indie scene long before pop culture recognized him as the fantastic artist that he is. Yeah... he was in New Moon(Roslyn) with Annie Clark of St. Vincent, but we still love him.
The resonator appears to be a very old National either brass or copper bodied with a new tailpiece put on it. Newer ones dont have the slotted headstock that was popular back in the delta blues period. I'd say it could be a 1940s at the oldest
Not sure if you know this but you can also also give your songs a percussion backing on an acoustic. Newton Faulkner does that a lot and Ben Howard. It truly is amazing how the most simple songs sound the best though.
Lots of videos with bon iver using a hut. And this was the one time he most defenetly needed one
One of the best songs I've ever heard. Everything from the lyrics, intonation, and emotion put into this song, it is pure and beautiful just as music should be.
I'm glad to be the most recent comment in at least 6 years, people are still here who know what music is
One of the only live versions of a song i've heard that sound exactly like an album version. Fucking amazing song. and bon iver is such a good singer.
The sound quality of this recording is unbelievable!
I really cannot wait for the next album!
I have to comment!! Its the best song best version best everything i have ever heard EVER!!
This song touches me so deeply... Thank you, Bon Iver guys.
for the last time, birdy did a cover, bon iver wrote the song. while birdy's had a different expression, it was no where close to bon iver.
This man is so amazingly talanted that I loose my breath! Just goes to show that there's still hope for music after all!
He looks like he just came out of a 3month trip alone in the woods. Oh wait.
bon iver, a guitar, shorts, vest top and a mic, thats all you need
Love old live videos, no iPhone in the crowd, people actually present in the moment.

Bon Iver's emotions alone can beat the crap out of the other "versions".
This made me time travel back to the 70s ....Hippies unite...Message to the world lets sing it !!!

@johanhatehippies ya man its a resonator instead of a regular wood body it has a steel body which gives it its unique tone

Absolutely love the sound of it..
