  • Yes, I know that once again the sound could be better - grrr. It seems that I should just leave it at max, and if I sound a bit shouty, then that's better than being a bit quiet. Anyway, Simon Tegg from Genspect NZ has written an awesome open letter to NZ's Health Minister, Dr Shane Reti, outlining the serious shortfalls in any input that WPATH or PATHA (Professional Association of Transgender Health Aotearoa) may provide for "national gender-affirming care" guidelines.

Thanks Katrina for carefully reading this out for us - a seemingly simple act but one that gives very welcome emphasis to important written tracts to which people might otherwise not give attention. I really appreciate your work in this regard - to me, your video interviews are well done, and I find your writing exceptional. For me, it would be great if NZers were to come round to pronouncing "women" in what I recognise as the correct English way, but please don't ever stop opening your mouth and speaking up about this pernicious ideology. Your voice is one that is valued.

Thanks for those words - and thanks for being interested enough to listen and read from afar 🙂

Review of guidelines carried out by person who wrote them and another who publicly supported them. Insane.

Keep it up Katrina Confront the wackos with TRUTH .. Pronunciation is SECOND to DEFINITION / established reality! When we accept multiple meanings to a word reality disappears eg war is peace

Really admire your work, Katrina, thank you. Re the plural pronunciation of 'woman'. It is incorrect to pronounce it the same way as the singular. All pronunciation sites give 'wimmin' as the correct plural. Not sure why you would resist this, although I notice that Sean Plunkett does as well. heigh ho.

@@CharlieRavioli thank you :-) I don’t “resist” pronouncing ‘women’ as ‘wimmin’, I just don’t think about it when I’m talking or reading aloud. I may possibly be more conscious of it now, but, generally, it’s not at the forefront of my mind at those times. Plus, it’s like any unconscious habit, in that it can take a while to change it. I’m sure it won’t be the last I hear of it, though, so I doubt I’ll get to forget all about it :-)

@@katrinabiggs6672 not really. Breaking my arm didn’t cure my migraine. ‘Wow I have a broken leg and some people are complaining about their sprained ankles’…really isn’t a good point unless you think only one injury/problem can exist at a time. Clearly not the case since men are in our sports AND bathrooms at the same time!
I think I replied to you at the time of the ‘punisher’ person to explain the feedback was that its contributing to a wider problem and thus alienating your own target audience and THAT is something you would probably want to take seriously with such an importance of your words. It’s giving some mental whiplash- you fight a good fight for kiwi women but then turn around and dismiss fellow kiwi women who’re asking for a respect you consider to be inconsequential. if it’s such a nothing to you, yet obviously means a lot to others, then why die on that hill? Don’t get me wrong I too love a good dose of pettiness but why make a tongue in cheek trigger warning about her ‘punishing’ you instead of a simple “it’s a bad habit, I can try to correct it but can’t promise to get it right every time” when that’s all it would take to settle almost all of the complaints- please don’t cut your nose off to spite your face. I love the work you’re doing, I don’t want people to be bashing you or ignoring what’s going on over such an easily solved problem. Wow that turned into an essay, sorry.
Anyway, Great letter. I hope they read it and not just bin it.
