- Hard to find a rifle as easy to operate quickly with extreme accuracy as the Beretta BRX1. Short, long, or medium range - the Beretta was excellent for me. The Blaser R8 is a proven performer at a higher price point. Receiver length between the 2 couldn't be more different; and overall length and handling favors the Blaser. Anyway, much to admire in each of them.

Here is my opinion. If you got both rifles free for one month each to test on the range and out hunting i find it really hard to believe anyone on this planet would choose the Beretta over the Blaser. So it boils down to cost. If you can and want to spend so much money on a hunting rifle go with the Blaser. If the Blaser is simply to much money to spend on a hunting rifle for you than go with the Beretta its brilliant. But id suggest also if you choose the Blaser might aswell go with the Ulitmate Model. The shaft of the Ultimate Model really ties the whole thing together to make it the best hunting rifle out there i think. Love my R8 Ultimate

But im curious, why the Beretta? And what model of the R8 did you compare it to? I think the R8 with the basic stock as seen in the video feels a bit overpriced, its rather underwhelming. The Professional Success model or the Ultimate Model is really where its at in my opinion.
Agree with your opinion-BRX1 is very good for money you pay,but Blaser is another level.

The similarities between the Beretta and Stoner/AR bolt and trigger group are very interesting. I think the Beretta has a bit more modularity than the AR, because of its bolt/barrel interface. Many more cartridges could be adapted with that system, not needing various buffer springs and gas keys.
I would like to see Savage make some "kits" for its Impulse, similar to some that Blaser offers(of course with a bit better price than Blaser😉).

I’ve seen both, I was really keen on the BRX, but in the hands it just felt too cheap. Also only currently has 3 calibres (30-06, 300WM and 308) in a country where every barrel has to be licensed and licences are hard to get, blaser has so many more options. I agree the BRX is way cheaper though, at least here in Botswana 🇧🇼.
Get a heym sr30 or an old mauser 66 the blazer is overrated
Samer here in Australia, the gun and any subsequent barrels have to be registered. I got my brx in 308, i believe they do the 300 mag, 30-06, 243 and 6.5 creed as well now. Beretta have really dropped the ball with getting the calibre kits out in a reasonable time. I wish they would release a 22-250 version, but it doesn't help that they cant even get the kits out for the cartridges that they are already chambering in.

Steel Action is a great straight pull rifle at half the price of the Blaser. It seems the locking system is the safest regarding this kind of rifles. Accuracy is impressive. Not so sexy stock but nothing a gunsmith can fix working on the wood.
I agree. A hunter friend of mine has a Steel Action. But for me it missed the option to change calibers so I safed my money for a longer time and sold rifles I won`t use anymore to buy a R8

My choice for the best value straight pull rifle would be Heym SR30. Ball bearing radial locking (similar to legendary Fortner action) is tested to 100k psi pressures and locking system was just fine. You can find the photos of the action after testing.
On the other hand, Blaser R93 (''father of R'8'') had a lot of unfortunate accidents, especially in powerful calibers. Google shows some very disturbing pictures on query - ''Blaser R93 exploding''. Also current claim from Blaser that R8 action can withstand 200k psi chamber pressures is quite dubious from my perspective of mechanical engineer since even with zero safety margin there is only a tiny number of tool steels capable for this role.
Beretta has to much ''straight pull SKS'' vibe for my liking.
As far as i know there are only 6 or 7 documented incidents involving a catastrophic failure of the R93. I wouldn't call that "a lot of unfortunate accidents" when there are well over 200 000 R93's produced.
Blaser sucks. Just overpriced crap for nerds and prestige. I hurt some feelings now but i've seen and heard a lot of issues from Blaser owners.

My answer to a bolt action with speed and fast action is my Browning BLR. Its bolt head looks very much like the Beretta. The BLR as your already aware is smooth and extremely fast but not overly spendy. The obvious downside is that it really cannot be taken down unless your versed in its gear driven mechanical menagerie.
Yes - the BLR does it all and great that you mention the rack and pinion - best not to touch.
You will love the Steelaction. The name is a bit cheesy but it is really milled from one steel block. At least that is how it appears. The action is very simply and cycling it is super smooth. You cock it manually and that is were it beats the Blaser cause it's so effortless and doesn't make any nose at all. I paid 2.100eur for my SAs. One is in 8x57is and the other one is 30-06. Had a Blaser R8 once and sold it as I only used the SAs lately. Simple R8 whith polymer stock costs roughly 3500eur nowadays.

Blaser R93, absolutely fantastic. Comes in lighter than the r8, I very much like mine in the professional model. I can swap between barrels and scopes (thermal/day scope) in seconds.
I agree - I like the R93 best of the two models.
The locking lug angle on the 93 is inferior to the R8 ,i would not own a R93
@@ClovisPoint it is, but mines never failed since being produced in 2007. It was the earlier r93 “tactical” which had this issue when first released, as far as I am aware. I prefer the R93 because it is simple, practical, so pointable and just out right works no matter where I go with it.

In my opinion, Blaser is good, but to expensive for what it is. The BRX feels cheap, but i have to say i'm very selective and don't like many modern guns in terms of look, feeling and fit/finish. I would prefer the Heym SR30, and Steel Action feels good too, it's just not the prettiest gun, a bit bulky.
I have a older Heym, nice rifle. Would never by the Sr30 because the locking/cocking mechanism is quite idiotic. Steel Action is superb indeed. Yes, a bit bulky, but smoother than R8 and cheaper while similar in ergonomics...

As a single rifle I could agree, that there are better options than an R8 out there. But the R8 must be seen as a concept enabling you to shoot everything from .22lr up to .338 Lapua Mag. out of one Stock / Trigger / Bolt you are familiar with in a quality that has to be reached. Yes the exchange barrels are expensive - but not close to a complete rifle in the caliber that would match the quality of the R8.
2:00: The US website for Blaser currently lists the .500 Jeffery as being available for the Selous and Kilombero models (both of which come in wooden stocks), but not for any model that comes with a synthetic stock.

I’ve e owned two Berettas. One was a pistol with a rotary bolt, so they have experience in that, and the other was a pump shotgun, which was somehow a blend of high tech, and super simple, with a dash of convenience. They really do seem to have a budget……except for the pistol grip dept. Absolutely horrible. 😂

Oh, and I just got a converted Husqvarna in 9.3x57, drilled and tapped for a scope, pristine condition, with a wonderful converted military stock for a paltry $275 Canadian. What a buy!

Concerned about the mount of the scope. The rail looks like temperature could bend the rail !
The reason I didn't buy a Blaser is that the trigger is connected to the magazine. It's almost slap stick. The following should also be mentioned:
The bolt head of the BRX comes from the Beretta assault rifle and has proven itself thousands of times before. Furthermore, it should be mentioned that the safety slide has three positions compared to the Blaser with two positions. The logic behind the three stages corresponds to that of the Mauser K98. One has therefore very quickly internalised the way it works.
As a result, I made the right purchase decision and for the price difference alone, I could have bought another gun.
Why was the Trigger beeing connected to the magazine a offsetting point? In that way the rifle safes a few inches in total lenght, without shortening the barrel.
The blaser has "three" positions as well. The third position on the Beretta allows for a bolt cycling in the safe position. By liftling the cocking lever on an R8 just a bit you achive the same.
Just in case the strasser has not been mentioned.
That is another interesting rifle.
Hello. Starting at minute 5:30 you address the Gordian knot of this type of weapons with "two-stroke action". And it's true that ALL rifles can suffer catastrophic failure, BUT I think you forget to refer to passive safety measures when that happens. In my opinion, some of these types of rifles have a big gap in this regard. The question is not whether these types of bolts fail more or less but what they will do when they fail and what prevents them from being projected towards the shooter. Greetings. Good videos.
Great post - catastrophic action failure due to over pressure loads or obstructions can take many forms. Most modern rifles including those in the video handle gas from a ruptured case quite well. If the detonation of a cartridge occurs due to destructive over pressure - the outcome is difficult to predict. Naturally the manufacturers try to simulate catastrophic over pressure loads - but there are an unlimited number of circumstances and factors such as how the rifle is being held, how the rifle is resting and what it is resting on, the type of powder, shape of bullet etc... I'm sure you can think of more. Years ago we did some destructive testing on discarded Mauser actions and Enfields. We used pistol powder and ridiculous volumes of it and the same bullets. It was interesting to see that each action failed in a different way. I suppose, much like vehicle collisions - the manufacturer can make every effort and use engineering to the highest standards - but in the end...in certain circumstances, every vehicle will come undone. Guns are the same. IMHO
I understand. But in this immense variety of ways to fail there is a statistical fashion. Unfortunately it is inevitable that a bolt with a single bridge and free rear travel with only one stop ends up affecting the shooter in his most sensitive part: his head. Unfortunately we have some cases. We have experiences and images that show these differences. I think there are things that are fundamental to rifle safety and that most "four-stroke" action bolt actions offer are being sacrificed to the gods of fashion and quick reloading whit the straight pull. And... they really are so fast? (I hope my infamous English is understandable). Thanks for your attention. Keep going
Thought about buying a R8 it is a nice refined rifle but overpriced, got the brx.The blaser has a better trigger, the brx one is easy to work on. The brx has a reliable safety that catches the hammer, mine is a bit rough and needs help reengaging to do it silently, lanulin greasing helped a bit, disassembly is challenging and a complicated mess with 3 springs that i do not encourage. The hammer doesn't inspire trust but has yet to fail to ignite. R8 has manual cocking, hard to push to fire and has to be pushed to unlock the bolt when released, i have not diasassembled one but it's said to be delicate and no one ever does it - probably the reason for stuck firing pins and discharge on closing the action. The blaser is shorter-trigger under the magazine, locking and i think cocking by torquing the bolt handle. The brx bolt has a longer throw-locking/unlocking and crossing the magazine cutout that is designed for the longest cartridge. The bolt is accelerated and held forward by a second hammer which makes it seem and probably be really fast and slick, my guess is the part that fell out during Your diasassembly is there to catch the bolt should one drop the gun on the butt and overcome that resistance. The brx has a double stack mag and beretta promised a at least 10rd mag that i want for other uses than hunting. The feeding can be rough and with my hunting rounds rhe projectiles were scraped by the locking collet so polished the feed ramps, the locking lugs scratch the cases a bit. The blaser has perfectly angled feed, the magazine body moves out of the way of the bolt that locks in the barrel, the brx bolt in a screwed on barrel extension. Safety of the r8 is discussed i wouldnt trust it in magnum rounds though they improved the locking angles since the 93. The brx is claimed to pass the military test for their ar10 variant with a stuck bullet in the barrel. The brx stock is lighter but sturdy, showed some flashing from mass production. So i worked over some things on the brx that are to be expected for the price, the importanr parts are flawless and i would buy it again.
Such a great note/review; far better than mine. Maybe start a channel! I like them both - the BRX and R8 - your observations are excellent. Most people seem to be telling me that price is the main thing; and for all its imperfections, the BRX comes in with a pretty respectable rifle at a lower cost. The trigger is under the magazine to shorten the overall lenght. In the 93 it is not. I want excangable and the promised higher cap mags for the brx i own but never needed to magchange hunting so it it a decision to make.

One thing I don't understand about the Beretta- it appears to be tailor-made for rapid fire and ease of follow-up shots... but why did they go with such a low capacity magazine? With an AR pattern rotating bolt, why not also borrow the higher capacity AR10 (or AR-308) STANAG magazine? At least with the AR10 style of magazines, there is already a well developed ecosystem of affordable (and plentiful, but I repeat myself) products. I've seen Beretta techs 3D print a bracket after the fact that allows the use of AR10 mags, but as of right now, I cannot find them available for sale, so you'd have to be accomplished at solo-fabrication. Perhaps, if the BRX1 sells well, we will see a gen 2 that accepts some kind of standardized magazine- maybe Magpul/AICS. it would be interesting to see a return of the bolt-action fighting rifle that would be as equally suited for battlefield deployment as for hunting. Bolt guns having a natural affinity for suppression and in general being more robust than gas-operated, seems like an intriguing proposition.
Great comment; Beretta is pretty savvy at all this. The manufacturers I spoke with over the years told me they release new products and then see what direction the market takes with the product - and if the product takes off or is a "grinder" as they say. It's still early days for the BRX1 - you're likely right about a Gen 2 - but not necessarily; and if Beretta finds that the rifle is appealing to a certain market and demographic; they might introduce high cap mags of their own design. As you know, there is a preference for unique design mags by manufacturers due to litigation avoidance; the case being frequently made that facilitating the use of "military" mags is some sort of invitation - which makes no sense and therefore is quite popular; or so I'm told.
There are many, many actions taken against firearm manufacturers that the public never hears about.
Other makers are quick to adapt to the commonly made mags and Beretta may do the same - as you suggest.

Did I miss you mentioning that Beretta actually had to take the BRX1 of the market, when they first introduced it, due to design flaws or did you not mention that quite important detail?
Hello and thanks for the note - I had no idea or if I did I totally forgot : ) Yes, many times new products make it to market and are recalled as a result of flaws or design errors that consumers detect. Also, sometimes new products fail in some way in the market due to application/use over time. Thankfully this has been going on since industrial production and especially, mass production began; just the way it goes and consumers are used to bringing their cars back to the dealer; same for guns, blenders, cribs, garbage cans, car seats.... thousands of products. I have a Winchester that was recalled in totality years ago, and was supposed to be turned in for replacement with another model for free; but every manufacturer has these things happen. Thanks again - a good reminder for readers how effective manufacturers are. I bought a BRX1 in .243 - will make another review - such a fantastic rifle. You can buy one with a walnut stock now. I read about a sharps blowing the chamber at a Quigley match, but I can't find any pictures of the sharps action actually failing.

I fell in love with straight pulls after shooting a well taken care of Ross. Id own one but they are either hard to find where I live in Canada or horribly expensive. Which is a shame cause IMO they should have replaced bolt action guns long ago. And people who think they are unsafe should probably get rid of their semi auto guns. The bolts engage in very similar ways.

Maral is excellent but doesn't always seat the cartridge on bolt release; Helix is fantastic and a brilliant design but primary extraction can mean several tugs on the bolt handle to get the action open after firing - or a cleaning rod. So far the Beretta has no speed bumps.
Blaser of course . Best rifles made today .
I've got a 7.5-55 swiss it shoots about like a 308 it will shoot a 150 GR bullet 2800 FPS.

Do you experience any noticeable difference in the use of R93 v/s R8? I think the improvement to the locking on the R8 was very cleverly done by Blaser.

I like the R93 better - just a personal preference. As for power - I think the 458 Win and 458 Lott can do everything. The 500 Jeffery is just very unique to own and shoot.

Wonderful rifle. I owned an SR30 for a few years; the ball bearing locking system (may not be the right name) is excellent! Reminded me of my Fortner.

I don't like straight pull rifles. The more moving parts the more that can fail. Straight pull rifles are very sensible for dirt and on the shooting range it always the Blaser that misfires. All the guys i know with a Blaser have had problems. My friend just bought a new Blaser because of misfire problems with his first one. I own a Swedish made Varberger and for more than 20 years hard use i've never had a issue. In my opinion is Blaser an overpriced rifle for nerds. Everything with Blaser printed on is expensive and mostly a prestige object. Same for the Merkel Helix. Even the Beretta BRX1 had safety problems in the beginning and the sales where delayed. Simplicity is the best and most reliable. I shoot as quick with my bolt action rifle than the Blaser guys do with their straight pull action. There is not a single advantage with a straight pull trifle. For speed you're better of with a semi automatic rifle. Do you know that Blaser print their name on german Böker knives and Swedish EKA swing blade knives and you pay more than twice the price? A Blaser leather gunsling kost more than 100 Euro's? 🤣🤣🤣
I agree. Further, Mauser 98 remains best. Yet, there is joy in change.

European rifles are expensive and too much plastic ,which inevitably breaks,like on a Mannlicher M72 I had, the mag follower/ spring collapsed, lucky I was able to get a replacement ,Mauser 1996 straight pull ,has plastic follower ,trigger guard ,bolt shroud and bolt guides [good luck finding spares for them] ,Blaser's are way over priced, and too much plastic ,but no other manufacturer offers the barrel options ,and versatility ,I was told the steel action should only be used for the 458 Lott and Jeffery as the alloy actions will crack if you use them
Oh, how much I'm missing all good times when we had those beautiful hunting rifles with high gloss blueing and wooden stocks in oil finishes!? This new trend in building rifles is in accordance with ugliness and soullessness of the damned world we are living in. In my 50 years of hunting, I never wanted, and will never buy that ugly plastic guns. Period.

R8 has the most idiotic idea I ever see: take out the magazine with the trigger. I really do not know how people buy R8 rifle. The R93 were too far better
I find the R93 a more integrated design. A friend of mine with too much money tried to get the action of his R93 to fail with pistol powder and every manner of pressure - nothing changed. Eventually he gave up. Both the R93 and R8 are remarkable though.

Guides in Africa got frustrated as soon as they get the hunter with the Blaser rifle. They proved so unreliable in African Safari environment.
Funny that. Our PHs had a Blaser and a Brno. I wonder why they'd trust their lives to such an unreliable gun. Mysteries abound.
