Happy New Years! To answer your question, our society is too reactive instead of proactive. We wait for something unpleasant or bad to happen before we make any changes, and sometimes change still doesn’t occur despite the need for it. In my personal opinion, we (yes all of us) need to be more empathetic towards one another, and treat each other with kindness. Just a little can go a long way. We also don’t have the right leadership- they’re too focused on filling their pockets (ALL political sides), instead of working together and helping the people. Hopefully, 🤞🏼 this new year will be different.

To echo many others: It's not mental illness. When you're in a depressing situation YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DEPRESSED! There would be something wrong with you if you weren't.
So, what exactly is this "depressing situation" which highschool girls are in nowadays, resulting in a 60% depression rate? Looking through social media and seeing the fake life of celebrities?
When the "American dream" to own a piece of property is unnatainable, when most of us are drowned in debt, and unable to go grocery shopping without feeling anxious and bitter... and think to ourselves where did I go wrong? yeah, its a dark place.
I mean we are in more hopeless times than ever. Feels like our lives will always be controlled by rich people who do horrible things to others and face no consequences. No hope in homeownership, no worker or consume protections, no universal healthcare, little if any safety net, social isolation from the way society is set up now.. is it really any wonder everyone struggles with depression?
As a Canadian of Socialist parents from France, I heard it said the difference between Americans and French is this; in America, if you fail it's considered your own fault because Capitalism is supposed to be fair and just and never to be criticized. The only option then is to believe your failure is your own fault and that makes you a loser. People then silently turn inward in shame and blame themselves. In socialist France, if you fail, it's not your fault, but it's because the system is unfair and so French band together and fight for justice. You see the Gilet jaune and many protests in the streets. People don't cave in with shame and blame themselves. Not that no one gets depressed, or no one ever says that an individual cannot fail. It's just not the first conclusion one makes and I think there is less depression and blaming the individual for the sake of an unjust system.
So how is capitalism at fault for 60% depression rate in highschool girls? These girls don't have to work, they get everything for free by their parents, they live the richest lifestyle of any generation in human history. And this sky-rocketing depression rate suddenly began hundreds of years AFTER capitalism started, right when social media took off? Maybe it's the fault of social media and not of capitalism?
I imagine a lot of these suicides are a combination of mental health, financial depression, unaffordable healthcare, unaffordable housing, divorce, job loss, college failure, school shootings, loss of another family member, home eviction, unaffordable groceries, expensive schooling, loneliness, living unrealistic lives like one guy said, and oh boy the list goes on and on.
School shootings? Suicide has nothing to do with school shootings and to be quite honest I think school shootings are because of bullying and hazing that makes the shooter suicidal and violent to the point of killing people and themselves. I don’t feel sorry for school shootings because it happens because bullying and hazing and harassment of a person for years and years. School shootings don’t cause people to commit suicide unless it’s the shooter or the victims family members.
I've lived over 40 years with depression and then anxiety on top of that. Due to both, and bad luck and poor choices to some extent, I also have physical issues. But I do have hope and faith and just try to live one day at a time.
Hey @anthonqx22 I used to think of ending it all after I was abused, used, manipulated, ostracized, belittled and betrayed in a cult. I left the cult and with c-PTSD, anxiety, depression, almost bought a bottle of wine to drink my pain away, almost bought cigarettes to smoke my pain away, almost self-harmed my pain away, almost brought myself to throw-up my pain away, but Jesus has been so merciful to me. He was always there keeping me but the pain of the mistreatment I received and my self-righteousness were blinding me from His love. I started treating other people just like I was treated and one day I felt bad about it and spoke to a floormate who happened to love Jesus. I had seen a good heart in her. She said to me "You do not see other people's worth because nobody showed you your worth". This stayed with me till today (it was last year around in July). Later on I heard a sermon from Zac Poonen (He is a bible-believing preacher and I recommend his teachings) on pride and he explained how we see and treat each other, how God sees us and does not want any of us to look down on the other. So that day I understood that the treatment I received was undeserved because I am worthy to be loved and treated like God sees but we live in a fallen world were people think highly of themselves. Also Jesus says "bring your burden unto me you heavy burdened and I will give you rest". My floormate also asked said to me "did you bring your burden to Christ?". At that moment I began to cry as I realized how muh I had kept in my heart and how heavy my heart was and she just touched the right spot in me. Mind you I am black and she is white. She then told me to bring my burden to Christ. We prayed together and sang songs of praise as well. So it took me almost a year of knowing her, listening to sermons from Zac poonen, learning about narcissistic abuse and self-worth, and so on, I prayed when I felt anxiety, sadness and so on that I now understand that what matters to me is how God sees me and not how man sees me. When I feel down I do not want to carry the burden of pain alone so I asked Jesus to help me. I learn to not carry the burden of stress, anxiety, hopelessness on my shoulders as it is to heavy for me to carry. Please anthon, I invite you wholeheartedly to pray and ask Jesus to help you as the pain and burden you feel is greater than the strength you have to carry it. This is one of the reasons why we need Jesus. Also as the Bible says: lean on God with all your understanding and not on friends or family or men. You are worthy of being loved and cared for even if your loved ones or people not close to you make you feel different. If someone broke your heart, it doesn't mean that you are not a loving person, they were just not the right people for you and this is why they can't see your worth. Do not end it because of toxic individuals. Your genuine personality is still highly needed over here. Also if life seems hard, be encouraged by the fact that people have made it even after the holocaust and other wars. Be strong for the heritage you want to leave behind. What we sow is what we reap. Sow something good as long as you breathe so that one day, you will want to reap good fruits. Also forgive and hug yourself. We all make mistakes but we can also be humble enough to learn from them. I love you dear and you are important just that you don't see what you bring to others. May God bless you abundantly and may this be a year of grace, self-discovery, self-love, progress (at its pace), joy (even though some days might be difficult) and gratitude for what you already have and have achieved and for who you are (loving, patient, kind, not yet loving to yourself, not yet forgiving yourself, not yet letting go and leaning unto Jesus, maybe in the phase of discovering yourself and better than yesterday) and aspire to be (loving, patient, kind but wiser, loving yourself, forgiving yourself, not holding grudges, letting go and leaning unto Jesus, still discovering yourself, better than yesterday) . Take care dear.

The urban kids are much more affected. This is my perspective as an outsider. I don’t think this will get any better. No amount of talking will help get rid of physical problems and worries. Polititians need to stop trying to act like the issue is that people with depression aren't getting treatment. Its your policies that are causing the poverty and crime to go up. Its your policies that are causing the rise in suicide, no one is personally responsible for not wanting to live in this system you've created. No politician cares about us until we start opting out of this system. Then suddenly its an issue for them and they find a way to accept no responsibility for the way things are.
Its not an issue for them, its only an issue if they didnt have enough people to support the pyramid scheme that allows their ultra luxury standard of living; the social heirarchy.

Our President is old and not in touch with modern society at all, and we have no options for a replacement. Our land is flooded with weapons that only the military should carry; not even the police should have some of these weapons. There's no chance for things like owning a home one day; the moment minimum wage goes up, so does rent, followed by rates from every single company that desires another penny from our pockets and see's the raises being handed out like Halloween candy. Does that number include those that died via "suicide by cop"? Watch a few officer involved shooting vids for a few weeks; one thing that will jump out at you very quickly is how often the person shot says "shoot me" before taking an action virtually guaranteed to get them shot. Nobody goes to Church anymore where you can hear some uplifting words or be around people that want to pick you up. Nobody raises their kids with any morals or standards. Anyone under age 35 has been hearing "the world is going to End soon, we'll all die by fire" since their formative years by their teachers. Be it the drug epidemic, COVID, the gun craze, etc., Death, with his scythe, strides among the US population unabated like never before in our history; Reaping lives both guilty and innocent, and our leaders either don't care or are powerless to stop it.
I feel confident that number is low to begin with. They usually hide those statistics because it causes more suicides. Dont know that I agree with that. If you dont acknowledge the problem you cant fix it. You cant fix it.
This tells us nothing about why people committed suicide. We can't address the problem without knowing the root cause. Depression is a symptom, not the cause of suicide.
We’re JUST NOW talking about mental health? Haven’t you been paying attention to the shooting, road rage, etc incidents? I know you love to bash gun owners but mental health is typically the issue behind it I feel. That is also largely linked to the shrinking middle class, the outrageous cost to have any kids at all, healthcare costs, rent, etc!
Keep paying all those medical specialties more and more money while psychiatrists and therapists nearly at the bottom of the totem pole. How many patients that are overweight haven’t lost weight and knee replacements died? Yet one of the highest paying specialties.

We wait for something unpleasant or bad to happen before we make any changes, and sometimes change still doesn’t occur despite the need for it. It's not profitable at all; they can easily be replaced by migrants. Many people want to live in the USA.
People can't get a job and people can't pay the rent. Go figure.
Exactly

These girls don't have to work, they get everything for free by their parents, they live the richest lifestyle of any generation in human history. And this sky-rocketing depression rate suddenly began hundreds of years AFTER capitalism started, right when social media took off? Maybe it's the fault of social media and not of capitalism?

I was almost in the group root for me for next year. My life not going bad but the mental anguish is getting crazy!

Be it the drug epidemic, COVID, the gun craze, etc., Death, with his scythe, strides among the US population unabated like never before in our history; Reaping lives both guilty and innocent, and our leaders either don't care or are powerless to stop it.

Church and my religious family members are largely responsible for my depression. I'll pass
Lol, America spends 900 Billion military, that’s the problem.
The world is too hard to live in these days! It’s mental illness, depression, these hard times in which the world is too hard to survive in,… and it’s a growing list of suicides of those in chronic painful situations that are suffering because they can’t get the proper pain management treatment from their doctors any longer due to the “War On Opioids Act”, it’s the Homeless Veterans who don’t receive enough help,.. and it’s the homeless period because the cost of living is just so high they can’t afford it, plus much more that this harshness of this world has become! All of these things need be addressed and fixed, because if it doesn’t get better soon, there’s going to be a continuing rise in suicides. I’m elderly now, and I’ve never seen this world is such a mess,… especially the “America” we are living in today. Prayers for everyone.🙏
Living has become unaffordable under politicians policies
