Technically, there was no advance on the 12th of May, the Russians stopped their advance to consolidate their positions, not because of the Ukrainian defence, that has been wiped out, ran away or surrendered without fighting. It's to be noted that the Kharkov front is "only" 300 out of the 1,500, the losses are mostly around Ocheretyno. In chess, you call it a "fork", it forces an unwanted action by threatening of huge losses (or defeat, it's often a choice between the king and the rook in a check position). As a result, the Ukrainians (i.e. NATO) are hurrying troops taken from everywhere else in an attempt to limit the damages, which leads to "dead moves" (transferring pieces from one place to another make those pieces inactive during their journey) and weakening of the positions they come from (Avdeevka, Ugledar and Kherson). The village taken by the Russians are supposed to be empty for months (there was an evacuation order) and it appears the money to build defence lines have been used for... someone else. The Russians have (mostly) stopped advancing and are taking care of the reinforcements that are coming in the open: the losses in terms of NATO hardware are huge in the last 48 hours, but there's no other solution.
This offensive is a bait, and NATO has bitten it. According to Ukrainian forces, the Russians there are only 50,000 (or so), and they're setting defensive positions on the heights (Vorvshank), where are the others? Also, 1,500 is only for the 12th, I think it was 1,600 on the 11th, with the Kharkov front being the smallest one: possibly not the primary objective.
Also, Putin has appointed an economist at the head of the defence ministry. Although it sounds weird, it totally makes sense in the grand scheme of things: the Special Military Operation is not only a military war, it's a larger-scale economic operation, and something even bigger is coming there. Elvira Nabiullina has authored a couple of tricks on the currency system (fuel paid in rubles instead of dollars and euros), it looks like Putin is giving the signal of the the ending: take over Ukraine and collapse The West's economy to prevent The West from coming ever again. For instance, forbidding the convertibility of the ruble to foreign "unfriendly" countries and setting the exchange rate of those currencies (dollar, euro, sterling pound...yen) by the Central Bank of Russia as a favour for "friendly" countries would simply block any trade and establish a financial embargo on the countries unable to pay in rubles. All Western assets in Ukraine and Russia would be nationalised and all war debts would be denied/defaulted ("not gonna pay for weapons used against us!"), and all Western participations by Western companies to projects in Russia (e.g. Yamal LNG) would be simply voided... The time has come.
