  • 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #131
    The Chevrolet Camaro is one of the most popular Muscle Cars of all time, and many times we overlook the factory-built "hot rod" versions of the Camaro. The original Z/28s were far more than just a striped Camaro, as they featured a high-revving 302, tuned suspension, better brakes, and much more. This Butternut Yellow '68 is one of the Z/28s in the Brothers Collection and is our pick for Muscle Car Of The Week.

    Loved my 69 Daytona Yellow style trim Z28. It was never beaten, even had some guy beside me said that I pulled the front wheels when I hit second. It could be true, it hooked up real hard with subframe connectors and long slapper traction bars. Subframe connectors are needed for high rpm shifts as the unibody likes to flex and misalign the clutch.

    True about the low end Torque, many said it doesn't have enough to pull the skin off a grape but once the motor wound up look out. Also it's claimed this motor was closer to 400hp at the crank than it's advertised 290 hp.

    beautiful car but 302 4 bolt main wasnt available until 69 DZ block.....wrong shifter ball too. Depending on the build date Z/28 emblems on the fenders didnt appear until 3rd week of March......but still my dream car

    Happy New Year Kevin. Does the Brother's collection have rare 1950's HEMI cars? A '57 300C convertible (only 484 made) perhaps or D-500-1 three speed (only 8 made) or ultra rare D-501 convertible (only 3 made). Anyway, keep up the great work!

    This video claimed a 3,700 weight. That is heavier than a Chevelle with a small block of the same year. I looked it up. I found three sources and got three widely different answers. I found an estimated 3,060, also 3,695 and 3,265. The 327 of the same year weighs 2,955. I would guess that 3,265 is the closest to the actual weight of the 1968 Z/28.

      You would be correct. My 69 Z weighed just over 3200 with me in it.

    Chevy never actually made a 302 block casting. The 302 was an ingenious creation considering the short time frame they had to get into Trans Am racing with its 305 cubic inch limit. Chevy took it's already red hot 365 hp 327 that had been in a couple of models in the 60's and de-stroked it down to 302 cubes by installing a 283 crankshaft. Ford on the other hand made an actual 302 motor in various versions for it's Mustang.

    I could be mistaken so correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there the DZ Code 302 that you could get that featured the cross ram dual quad intake along with headers that came in the trunk and was dealer installed?

    • @johnfriend862
      @johnfriend862 8 років тому +2

      +Brian Cabral DZ was the engine code for all 1969 Z28 engines, in 1967 & 1968 the engine code was MO. They were the same engine, except for the addition of a large journal crank and 4 bolt mains in 1969. Yes, in 67 and 68 the block was 2 bolt mains. If you ordered the cross ram & headers in 1969 yes, they did come in the trunk to be "dealer installed" options. Also, the cowl induction hood was not available in 1968, that was a 1969 only option.

      +John Friend Thanks for the info

    • @zapper302
      @zapper302 3 роки тому

      Okay, 67 302 engines had 2 bolt mains with a small journal crank. 68 302 engines had a large journal crank and 2 bolt mains. 69 302 engines (like mine) have a large journal crank and 4 bolt mains with a special oil pan and windage tray for those high rpm runs. A new crossram manifold can still be purchased from Offenhauser, they purchased the molds from Winters (hence the snowflake on Chevy performance intakes) many years ago (I believe sometime in the 70s)

    Kevin, What is your take on the Pontiac GTO's little brother the LeMans with a 326 cu.in. v8, I had a 1967 version that ran great, my friends swore I put a bigger engine in it they said it was too mean to be a little 326. I lost my pride and joy to spare a 5 year old boy his life who ran out in front of me, car died little boy went unscratched to grow up big and strong. Could you do a review on these great little non-muscle cars for those of us who could not afford the GTO.

    I believe all first gen Z/28s came with rear bumper guards .

    • @zapper302
      @zapper302 3 роки тому

      No they did not , they came with much smaller ones without the rubber strip. The bigger ones with the rubber strip came with the F40 performance suspension package which all Z28s had.

      Very rare option in late 68 and 69. If ordered, it came boxed in the trunk for the dealer to install.
