  • Albert Anastasia's assassination propelled Carlo Gambino to the top of what is now known as the Gambino Crime Family. Rumours have circulated for years that the hitmen on the famous Mob Hit were Crazy Joey Gallo and Carmine Persico.
This American Mafia documentary explores a theory put forward by author Jerry Capeci that the shooters of The Mad Hatter were actually lower East Side drug dealers working for Joe Biondo.
This Cosa Nostra history documentary on the Lord High Executioner's murder features such names as: Vito Genovese, Joe Profaci, Neil Dellacroce, Joe Piney Armone, Stephen Armone, John Gotti and many more.

Totally right, had he survived, it would have changed all LCN history as we know it! Think about it, no Carlo as Boss, no Genovese as Boss, no Persico as Boss and so much more. We'd have no Genovese family, who knows what that family name would be as well as the iconic Gambino family! Hell, Albert would of gone after Traficante as well after questioning the timing of the meeting he had before the hit on him. One things for sure, Albert was arguably the most feared mobster ever. Look at what it took to take him out. Thinking about had he survived the hit, LCN history would be nowhere near what we know it as today. Another great vid OC Shortz! Keep up the good work, love your videos and how well they are put together. From the artwork, to the quality and most importantly, the info/history. We dont get recycled stories that arent true or versions of incidents that are grossly inaccurate. OC Shortz has become one of my favorite channels for these reasons above and more.

Why would Gambino trust Persico to carry out the hit?
Persico was just a kid, plus he was looking at some serious jail time at that time could put him away for 15 years; that would make Carlo nervous of a guy like that ratting on him for less time.
Remenber, Persico had no reputation at that time.

@@joescott5322 Still you have to consider the facts of the situation, Carmine Persico was a 24-year old Gangster with no real reputation at that time. I strongly doubt such a high risk important hit would be trusted to anyone that age. This is the Mad Hatter we're talking about. Armone, Grammauta and Wittenberg were all seasoned Mob vets who undoubtedly had killed plenty of guys they'd be far likelier to get the contract. Why would Gambino take the risk to farm it out either? He'd owe Profaci who wasn't his ally on the Commission, there's risk when more people know about hits especially young Gangsters who could either rat or tell the guy like Colombo did. Gambino probably had Lucchese and Genovese' support, put the best guys in his faction of the Family on it and they carried it out.

Imagine being Grammauta, a loyal Soldier who was involved in one of the biggest Mafia hits ever way back in the 1950's, solid through and through and then 35-40 years later having been active in the Rackets for nearly half a Century and you have to take orders from a kid like John Junior? A kid who hasn't even been alive half as long as you've been doing hits. That shows how stupid Gotti Senior was, he hated Castellano for being Boss and saying he didn't deserve it and only got the position because of his Family ties to Gambino but then made an inexperienced dumb kid like his son Gotti Junior the Boss of the Family. Completely ruined the respect the Family had. The Chin wouldn't even meet with the kid. Gotti should have made an old time guy like a Grammauta the Boss or at least Acting Boss or someone of his caliber to restore order and respect to the Family.

Many don't realize but killing Anastasia was the 2nd Domino to fall in forever weakening the mob which 20 years later led to the 5 bosses all going to prison. The first Domino to fall was Willie Moretti who had close ties to Frank Costello and kept Vito Genovese from trying to oust Costello and take over. Moretti death slowly eroded Costello hold. Then the Mad hatter was killed and a short time later The Chin tried to kill Costello, sent by Genovese. Costello resigned and the mob lost its greatest political fixer in Frank Costello. Genovese organized Appalachian meeting which exposed a national crime syndicate when the meeting was discovered upstate NY. This left the mob wide open for law enforcement. Genovese was framed later on by Gambino and sent to prison for life.Losing Costello further eroded the mobs legitimate world connections. One bad decision after another weakened old school traditions.Gambino appointing Paul Castellano on his death bed then later on Big Paul being murdered by Gotti without commission approval. The pizza connection followed by the commission case and then Gotti appointing his nit wit son as boss. That chain of events in 20 some odd years finished off the golden age and the remnants of the golden age of the mob. Was never the same

You'll note, consistent with your viewpoint, that Carlo Gambino had his son, Thomas, in the crime family but the guy never rose above capo regime. I do think that Carlo would have left the family more stable had he appointed Dellacroce to succeed him.

As already mentioned the site of the Anastasia hit was the Park Sheraton Hotel. That wasn't the first hit here. The mentor of mobsters Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Frank Costello and others, Arnold Rothstein, was also shot there 29 years earlier when the hotel was about a year old and was then called the Park Central Hotel. He was shot inside his suite, staggered through the front doors and collapsed just outside building. He died two days later in his hospital bed.
Anastasia should have known better. He knew he had to be careful. The hit on his friend Frank Costello was only about a mile away just five months earlier. Tough neighborhood! They say you can take the gangster out of the hood, but you just can't take the hood out of the gangster. No matter how wealthy and ritzy the hood. Before he went to prison Lucky Luciano lived in the Waldorf-Astoria just a few blocks from the Costello and Anastasia sites.

If you are wondering why Gambino would farm out this hit to another family, there are a number of reasons.. Could be because of the high level of the hit, it couldn't be discussed in the then Anastasia family because word might slip and Albert finds out and it is doom for everyone in the family involved. Secondly, at that time, you had to have balls to whack a boss. A boss as feared as Albert at that. Vito could do that to Frank because he was a high ranking mobster with influence in the commission at the time, you can't say the same for Carlo.

Imo Don Vitone was the most power hungry mobster who would rather have had a NY outfit with him on top than a syndicate/commission. In the end,he paid for his greed doing time. I'm surprised Fat Tony was his predecessor but I can see why Vito and Chin got along. I like Fat Tony Salerno more he maybe kept his word more than most. Still a scary old guy, but likeable

I dare say he was decent to some people but I can't say I feel bad for him, you have to remember that the people who he killed or had killed had families. That is a question I wondered about as well. From all I saw Genovese really wasn't a good ally to any of the former Dons and yet they didn't take any actions on him. But what is to be believed is that after the assassination attempt on Castello he, Gambino and other associates of them had Genovese sentened to 15 years for a drug case as revenge. That of course resulted in him loosing his seat as head of the comisson and lead to Gambino being the new Boss of bosses.

Then Luciano got deported back to Italy and was followed constantly by police, press, and ppl on vacation just trying to talk to him.....you have to think about all the reasons why he didn’t have him killed.....1. He is deported and basically loses all his power. 2. Joe adonis a close friend gets deported as well and fights American justice for years in the 50s 3. Frank Costello was trying to keep the peace in New York and in the early 50s Costello was in and out of jail for 5 years for contempt and something else. 4. Meyer lansky is in Cuba trying to get shit gonna again and has to much on his plate. 5. Albert Anastasia and him make peace in front of the bosses so a war doesn’t happen again and the week joe bonanno goes to Italy after making the commission make a pact between Albert snd genevose. Albert Anastasia is killed before he could kill Genevose.... Basically at the end of the day Luciano lost his powers and his friends back home had there own problems with hearings and back stabbing that they couldn’t really worry about Genevose and had to worry about each other’s survival.....I hope that makes any sense

I always thought Genovese came to Carlo for backing to take out Costello and in return Genovese would back taking out Anastasia (you help me become boss and ill help you become boss), but Carlo was playing the long game and ultimately knew that he would throw Genovese under the bus (i.e., Frank, Carlo and them supposedly tricking Genovese into getting arrested/Gigante possibly missing Costello on purpose) and that they decided to use Colombo guys for the hit (Persico and Gallo). Been a while since I looked into it, but I bet there weren't many that were sad to see Anastasia go. He looks like a cool old man in pictures but by all accounts he was a very vicious guy. @@mrfugazi6713 That's definitely a myth. If true the story would have been brought to the fore by a fed. Why pay off a stoolie when you don't know if their testimony would be credible. If one looks at the actual case there were 3 other cooperating witnesses. It wasn't just Cantellops. Were they paid off too? There is no one in Cosa Nostra too big to whack. Masseria, Maranzano, Mangano, Moretti, Costello shot at, Anastasia, Profaci threatened, Bonanno targeted, Colombo, Eboli, Galante, Castellano. All were as big as it got in Cosa Nostra. The reason not to kill Genovese was to avoid the West Side coming after them. Also why would Lansky be involved. He had nothing to gain or lose by Vito going to prison. Luciano was never going to return to the U.S. and usurp command. And the most important point of all, what purpose did supposedly setting up Genovese accomplish? He went to prison but the family was still very much radically loyal to him. His power, even behind bars, did not wane. It was as if he were on the street. So the whole set up story, of which there is no evidence of, is a Lucky Luciano tall tale to make him look as if he were still somehow pulling the strings from Italy.

@@mrfugazi6713 yeh that is what I was eluding to. Interesting though because that is sort of a "rat move" lol but I doubt the bosses cared much as long as they got what they wanted, and Frank and Lucky got their revenge as they probably knew Genovese was the kind of guy who would suffer more in prison than dying in the street like a "gangster." Although, I always read that Genovese got caught somewhere down south in a room with a bunch of drugs, which makes little sense because why is a boss in a room with drugs, even if they are involved with them. Idk its all very interesting nonetheless. I'm not sure if this is during the time Genovese was in prison for life, but if so, then they inadvertently created the Valachi situation, probably should have just whacked him, from an LCN perspective.

Most famous mob photo hits (my ranking order), what's yours OC and others? I probably missed quite a few.
    (1) Bugsy Siegel-the EYE (or lack of)-- this photo was up close and personal
    (2) Carmen Galante- the CIGAR in mouth ( he must have been really pissed!)
    (3) St. Valentine Day's Massacre-all those dudes dropped in place in the garage
    (4) Albert Anastasia-wrap around tie, and the CHAIR (he and Lepke died in/near the CHAIR!)
    (5) Willie Moretti-the spotted FLOOR, (if he had a cigar he would have looked just like Galante!)
    (6) Angelo Bruno-the open MOUTH (as graphic as Siegel's and others, but it was Philly
    (6) Sal Maranzano-just because of who he is, looks like a routine hit, not really a good shot of him on the floor.
John Gotti's underboss Frank DeCicco probably would have topped the list, but don't know if there are published photos (he was car bombed) since it was probably too brutal, or if there was enough of him left to take a pic of!
Bonnie Parker doesn't qualify although her death photo was spectacular lying in that front seat of the car with her body well ventilated. She and Clyde I don't consider real mob-mobsters, plus their deaths weren't hits by other mobsters, but by cops.

@@OCSHORTZ Glad to hear you have a connection to Detroit! In around 1935 when my father was about 12 he was selling newspapers on a street corner in Detroit when he saw a car come squealing around a corner with a man leaning out the passenger side window blasting away with a Thompson Sub-Machine gun. He took out a local mobster who was standing across the street! Yeah, the Detroit had some power for sure and they had to be instrumental in working in concert with the East Coast mob in taking out Jimmy Hoffa! Apparently one strong point of the Detroit Mob is they stay VERY Low Key trying to stay under the RADAR of Law Enforcement and the Feds! I have also heard they are pretty strict about marriages!......Only marrying members of other Mob Families!!
