- Sony A7siii - How To Expose S-CINETONE
Sony dropping a bomb with this update and including S-Cinetone as Picture Profile 11 for the a7s3. Here are my thoughts on how to expose this epic profile.

I have a video on my channel that gets into exposing for Cinetone that might help ya
Thanks a lot! Very helpful
Glad it hit for ya, Matthias!
Dope video. Just installed the update on my a7siii and had no idea how to expose for it lol. Thanks for the info! New subbie

Killer video man. Suggested on my main page and quickly subscribed. Still waiting on the cicerone to work on Big Sur.
Hey Shane, thanks for joining the channel
I used an old PC for the update, that Big Sur block is lame
great video bud
Thanks, Jesse
Hi Sean. My first watch of your videos. Great content, and I have subscribed. I look forward to testing out your 85% exposure settings. The old school advice I have always received is to go with 65-70, which has worked well as a starting point for video with my a7r2, but I have the s3 now to try out.
Another thing you might be interested in is around detail. I know there is a lot of talk about dropping detail for a cinematic look. I shoot product video for a high end women’s shoe brand, @habbot, and always add sharpening in post - it can be a bit rough on skin tone, but makes the detail of the shoes really pop.
I look forward to watching more of your content. Thanks mate. Dan
Hey Dan, thanks for checking this out. I’m definitely moving more towards shooting 4K at -2 on the detail and when (rarely) I shoot 1080p it will be at 0.
Let me know your thoughts on the 85 IRE with this profile - look forward to keeping the conversation going
@@seandewispelaere Yes, you are right, 70 is the best settings!
love it
Thanks!

Now to pull it all together...
Do you still recommend these setting for outdoor shooting. I commonly leave everything on automatic due to the simplicity but I wanna step up my game
Hey, yes, I ran some outdoor stuff the other day and used these exposure preferences. The clipping point on s-cinetone is 109% so keep that in mind
Thanks for another great vid Sean. I upgraded the firmware and will try your suggestions. Question: How do you create the zoom-in/zoom-out effect while maintaining audio continuity? Is it done in camera or in post? Thanks!
100% done in post via keyframes - thanks for checking it out, Orville
@@seandewispelaere Thanks for responding. I'll give it a shot!
Nice studio !
Thank you
Great video thanks alot! How do you set your details settings when shooting in s-log3 combined with the pro mist filter? Most people reduced details up to -7. I wonder if that applies even when shooting with the filter on. How to get some insight here. Keep up the good work!
Hey so I leave my detail at 0 when I have a mist filter on and at -2 (without any sharpening in post) when there isn’t a filter on the lens
🔥🔥🔥
Yo, what's up. Tommy?!
Yesss! Btw I used to be Canon user, nothing wrong with them but I feel I grew more to Sony side and I'm happy I made transition. All these main brands are cool but I feel Sony has been pulling a weight lately, let's wait what Canon will come up with this year, regardless, I'm Sony team now 👊 this vid is very insightful and I had similar numbers in mind when it comes to zebras, great vid overall and waiting for next few ones that'll follow 👍👍👍
No surprise that you were already on it with the exposure, my man
Hey buddy another great video. If I can make a request can you make a video on the dual ISO settings in this camera? I just don't get it!
What's up, Daisy - yes, I'll include that in the 3rd video in this series where we look at the low light performance
@@seandewispelaere fantastic I can't wait! While I've watched Gerald Undone a bunch of times I still don't understand it! I was able to set my menu settings and custom buttons perfectly thanks to your previous video and am hoping you can explain these ISO settings like I'm a two year old!
Cool exposure tips, thanks! I like S-Cinetone for talking head UA-cam filming. Not sure how to quickly color grade and use creative looks though - are there good LUTs out there for S-Cinetone?
I find that a very simple exposure and color correct followed by a moderate stylized look works well. My PIKE LUT seems to work for my and my stylized look
Great Video🔥Finally got my M1 MacBook Pro 16gb this week btw!! Just switched from Premiere to Davinci and the new 17.1 version was buttery smooth with BMPCC 6k RAW and 12 RAW footage bro. Not sure if you use Davinci Resolve too but I’m curious to see your opinion.
I haven't gotten into Davinci much but I know a lot of stellar creators who swear by it
Would love to see s-cinetone vs canon color. The grade looks great. A light grade is best
That'd be a cool one to see! Thank you, I agree about a minimal grade.
Interesting. I didn't even know a new firmware update was available. For the non-human shot, I noticed right around 95 and 100% there was added noise in the highlights. Not sure if that was UA-cam compression or noise from in-camera, but something to be aware of. Seeing the different exposures I agree w/ your settings. Thank you.
Thanks - looked clean on my end, but I'll take another look
@@seandewispelaere Might just be UA-cam compression.
Sliding in that canon shade at the end....
A little friendly "told ya" - For real though, I love Canon cameras, but this one was too easy.
Interesting. I found that 65 +-5 or 70 are ideal. Anything above that you start getting hot spots in your skin. Keep jd of like what you're seeing in some areas of your face where the light his hitting you. I would maybe bring up a little more light in the shadows to make it not quite as contrasty. Then again, it's all about taste and preference. With that said dig your video man and setup
Yes, you are right, 70 is the best settings!
Would this be an ideal PP for straight outta camera in 8-bit shooting? For s-log I definitely do 4:2:2 however. I s'pose 8 or 10 would be great in s-cinetone
Sure would in mu opinion
Hi Sean! Thanks for this video - just one question. When you say 95% for non human subjects, do you mean you raise expose until the subject has zebras appearing, or do you kean use a grey card and raise the exposure until the zebras appear on the grey card?
Just curious under the the new pp what is your detail values set at? I noticed mine is. At (0) and I noticed another guy on UA-cam his was at -5 .. kinda strange since I didn’t change anything on my end and he said he didn’t neither lol. Just curious to know what yours shows lol
Yea mine is at 0 on the default. I keep it as 0 when I have the pro mist filter on and drop it to -2 when I don't
@@seandewispelaere cool thanks, I wonder why the other guy his default was at -5 lol. Maybe he must’ve moved it by accident
So who else has always wanted a straight up answer for settings with a simple yet convincing reason? When I found out Sean is using the same zebra setting as I am I literally had a Billy Madison moment, “I am the smartest man alive!”
My man!
“O’DOYLE RULES!”
@@seandewispelaere 😁👍🏻
Really curious about DR and low light tests vs SLOG-3! ))
1 stop difference
That is what I am seeing, too. In other words, I'll be shooting a lot in Cinetone...
@@one901 Slog3 gets about 1 stop better Dynamic Range than S-cinetone correct? Do you guys Think S-cinetone Dynamic Range is better than in standard profile?
@@mirrorlessny you’ve answered that with your response. If it’s one stop less than slog then it’s better than standard which is like 4 stops less
For anyone looking on how to expose bright white, the brightest part of his shirt is at 95 IRE in the ungraded part.
Sir anything you would change in the settings you described in this video for the Sony FX3 in June 2023? Still the same settings?
Exact same ;)
These shot at the base ISO 100 for cinetone ?
Hello Sir thank you for the informations. Can you say me the name from the Camera stand?
@ 3:40
Hit ya back on IG
holy jawline
Best one on the Tube 😂
Do you have a video where its not a controlled lighting? I been wanting to try S-Cinetone for my wedding reception videos with Dj lights bouncing around the dance floor.
I’ve played around with this some more and the zebra setting I like most is now 75. I think 80 is slightly overexposed and 85 is definitely overexposed. Unless I’m using zebras wrong? I go until the zebras disappear. Correct me if I’m wrong but if I left a slight amount of zebra stripes I’d have to go even lower, to 70. So I really think 85 is overexposed. Maybe for your indoor lighting 85 works best. But again, even indoors I find 75 is spot on. I will say it could also depend on skin tone. A dark complexion could require more exposure. You got a nice tan? 😁
So what’s the catch? Leaving room for grading I assume? Do you have a how-to video on grading? I’m a DIY learner so I’m not confident I’m doing everything right.
Hey Derrick, in short, I agree. Check out my “How I Expose Using Zebras” video as it might shed some light on this.
I think 75-80 is the way to go for lighter skin tones and I’ll be making an update to this video soon.
Thanks for checking out the channel 🤙
Agreed, I also like the 70-75 range more, at least my light skin tone looks better
Yes, you are right, 70 is the best settings!
@@passporttohappiness Yes, you are right, 70 is the best settings!
70% IRE on skin tones looks so good though... and 90% on subject has more detail (as I saw it) and looks little bit more pro than 95% (too bright - again for my taste)
Agree, my eye liked 70 to preserve more highlight detail.
Thank you for this feedback. I was having a hard time getting the footage to look right with skin tones exposed to less than 80-85 even though Sony suggest around 65. Good discussion here though! I can see your point about 90 vs 95 and I was going back-and-forth on that a lot. I found more times than not that 95 had a more desirable result for what I was going for, but I'll continue to shoot heavily in this pic profile and if I have any changes of heart I will keep everyone posted
@@seandewispelaere Yes I guess it finally comes to a matter of a personal preference = no only 1 right answer, and depends on what You want it to look and feel like :)
Yes, you are right, 70 is the best settings!
@@get_spanked240 Yes, you are right, 70 is the best settings!
Are u in automatic color balance before u exposed the zebraz with cine tone?
Custom white balance - check the info cards in the video to dive a bit deeper on that if you'd like
How do you think these results will translate to an outdoor natural light setting as opposed to your controlled studio setting?
I just ran a fair amount of outdoor tests to be able to get back to you on this. That said, I still found that 85% is the best option for skin tones in my opinion. For a subject, I'd ay that you'll have to weigh out what parts of the shot you want blown out if any depending on the lighting situation. For most things, I typically aim to get the subject exposed properly and deal with whatever is blown out from there if I am unable to manipulate the lighting. That said, 90% for the subject vs 95% would be fine and maybe even ideal if the lighting forces you into that scenario.
@@seandewispelaere Thanks for doing that, greatly appreciated and keep the amazing content coming, it’s a huge help
But how about if we have a range of ding. Amerasian and want to make the others the same as the a7s3 scinitone. As j need to beable tk use 3 cameras and they aren’t all a7s3. A73 and a7r3. I need to make these the same.
Likely going to be tough to do, but check out my last Cinetone video. It might help you - or - consider shooting on Cine2 or no Pic Profile
Can you or have you tried applying Color Space Transform to S-Cinetone in DaVinci Resolve?
I’m curious to know what kind of results you would get…
I haven't but am intrigued
Is there a use case for the cine profiles now? Does cine4 have more dynamic range than s-cinetone?
Yea did you see the most recent video of this series? I actually prefer Cine2 with the s-Cinetone color mode combo over everything else
@@seandewispelaere Yeah, thanks for the tip! I am going to shoot some more tests with the cine2 / s cinetone pairing. For some reason it seems like exposing and grading s-log2/3 is different on this camera. I've gotten consistent results with s-log on a handful of other sony cameras. The issue might be my post workflow with s-log. Anyway, I'll keep on testing. You're channel is a great resource! Everything is top shelf! Even the graphics!
Wtf you sound exactly like Mark Ruffalo. Also ty for the guide. 💕
You got it and haaaa my wife doesn't hear it, but maybe...?!
Is it possible to use the same picture profile for the FX3 or do have a video of this? Share it please with us ;)
Same workflows with the FX3, yes!
Thanks! A wee bit of feedback ... the link to video mentioned flashes so fast that even at .25 speed I could not catch it... appreciate your work though.
Thanks, Roz, I will fix this
Do you recommend s cinetone over slog3 for gym footage?
Hey Vlad, I've been liking SLOG for almost everything as of late. Took me a while to get confident with it, but once I did I find the footage to be more aligned with what I like.
Can NINJA V record S-Cinetone? I’m on latest firmware.
I'm not sure, but I'll update mine and take a look. Thanks for checking out the video, Lucas.
Is the base iso for S-Cinetone different than (what I've read) for S-Log 3 - 640 & 12,800? Thanks for making this video. Subbed and Liked.
Happy to have you a part of the channel - thank you! Yes, definitely different - I'll post the #'s when I get back to my camera but check out the chart that I linked in this video (it is a free download on my sellfy store) that has the base and dual ISOs for the pic profiles. I don't have cinetone on there but I think it is the same as Cine3
sellfy.com/seandewispelaere/
It is 100 and 2000
Sean, huge help. Will try these today!
Reconfirms the importance of good ND/VND?
how do you grade the cinetone footage?
May or may not be a video coming out on this soon...
Do you use the same settings outdoors?
I'd expose to the zebra settings that I suggested in my recent zebras video
So is the rule of thumb that once the zebras appear to stop making it “brighter”?
Hey Phillip, yep - nailed it
Sorry-- one more question (for anyone)... Premiere's workspace color-profile only offers 3 options, none of which are S-Cinetone. For example, the default is Rec 709. Does that mean i'm seeing a Rec 709 color space and not the S-Cinetone? If that's the case, wouldn't my color-grading/adjustments be off? (sorry, new to all this)
Nah yea 709 is the standard and all is good there. There are still some color quirks in Pr though. I’ll get to making a video for ya shortly on all of this. Trial and error, test clips, same exports help a lot. You’ve got this 👊
@@seandewispelaere Dude, you're the best!
Can you please post the link for the LUT's?
No LUTs used on this one, just my usual grade.
@@seandewispelaere Whats your usual grade ? :)
Useful information begins at 3:42.
It’s probably just personal preference but I prefered your skintone highlights at somewhere be tween 70 and 80. I though 85 was way too hot.
I can see your point and think that some other people would agree. Prefer the overall image at 85% on my end - thanks for checking out the video
To my eye, cinetone can't touch eterna by fuji. Definitely improvement exists, but eterna looks more pleasing. BTW, I'm a panasonic fan boy. Nice video tho..
Thanks, James, glad you liked it. Fuji is cool 🤙
So Zebras at 85% means what? The Zebras disappear at 85% or start to appear or are not visible or?
Check out my “Exposing using zebras” video and let me know if you have any questions after that
It's an amazing news but no install on MacOS Big Sur... thinking about is it worth to downgrade it to Catalina... probably not. S-cinetone is only for the situations where DR isn't that important and skin tones are at the most importance (although if you know what u're doing SLOG-3 does an amazing job with skin tones).
I downgraded to Catalina to update the camera. Really easy
The Big Sur thing was annoying, I just grabbed an old PC and ran the update. "one91" has a good point above.
Agree about your point about SLOG3 and see them. both fitting into my workflows
Lol Sony has this out all ready , they say 65% is the best for skin tone . I’ll trust them.
I noticed that too but found it too dark. What have you seen with the footage on your end?
@@seandewispelaere no matter what profile I use I shoot 65+~5, never have issues it being dark that’s where skin tones fall ...
@@harmon_films glad that is working for you. I use the Leeming LUTs for other profiles like Slog and Cine and typically go with Paul’s recommendations for those which are typically north of 70 and even above 80 for some and found that I like those results a lot. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Do you have Instagram? Link doesn’t work

Hahah - John, it’s happened before.
@@seandewispelaere thanks for this video, btw. I think if I'm going for a moody look, I'll probably expose around 70-75%. That'll help protect my highlights too if I have a high DR shot.
Soooo how’s it do in low light?? Lol
Hey Chris, I scrapped that video for now, but have shot a fair amount in low light. It performs similarly to no PP and is overall strong.
So is the rule of thumb that once the zebras appear to stop making it “brighter”?
