I saw Hall & Oates in June 1983 at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, SC. Marshall Crenshaw opened.

I remember seeing this and being confused because the drumming didn't match with the sound you were hearing. I soon realized it was a live vocal track on stage over the music tracks that were recorded for the Rock Tokyo show months earlier in 1988. Why they did that for MTv New Year's I have no idea.

I also wish they would always play it totally live. I think the reason they didn’t, so often, was because the networks would have to pay them more if it was a totally live performance. They also probably worried that it wouldn’t sound as good as the record or a live album that’s been edited/touched up to make the band sound as good as possible.
