    Yeah ive had it with this Mob. Im demanding our Representatives ban this horse shit. They wont even show you where the money is being spent. They tell you its being spent on roads and ect. But roads are never fixed. And when they are they use state funds. Its about time we know what are money is being used for. Its time for Audits.

    Thank you for your informative video. Doing only local taxes in a city with a 1% tax rate not collected RITA, my first experience with the RITA nightmare was when a clients remote from us moved 3 times last year. Got a taste of not only RITA, but School District taxes. Your video cleared some things up for me. Thanks again!

    It's bizarre and incrediy stupid. They intentionally won't tell you they exist for like 8 years so tht they can stack up your late penalties. It's disgusting

    Thanks! I work in a RITA city and live in one as well. My company does not withhold local taxes. It was confusing at first. Like other commenters, RITA got me good after the fact with penalties after I had just moved into my new city from a city that did not have an income tax. I'd love to know how much of RITA's revenue is from penalties!

    It's also really bizare when you relocate to ohio and don't hear anything about it until 2-3 years into your residence. Then they hit you with a filing & return for multiple years. Then demand you pay it in full within 14-30 days or incur penalties & late fees. Seems really shady & unethical... Not mention there system doesn't let the accountant just do everything together or efile.

    When was this implemented? Because I knew nothing about this until my girlfriend got a letter in the mail from "RITA" and they were trying to tell her that she had late fees with them. Now this is the first time she's ever heard of this. Same with both of our parents, they've never heard of it either. When I checked for myself I supposedly owed them over $500 and I've never gotten a letter from them personally.

    • @SmartFamilyMoney

      RITA has been around for decades. It's possible your town just got an income tax recently.

    My W2 shows that i had money withheld for local taxes, i live and work in the same city, but i paid an addition 800.00 in march for tax returns. Now they are charging me for 2023 already… i feel like something is off here

    My problems with Rita, is they make money from the fines so they are incentivize to give you the max fine as fast as possible, and lose paper saying you paided so they can come after you again years later.
    Even when you move out of a Rita zone they say you didnt move you owe for these years and still try to come after you

    So if your employer takes out the taxes of the city you work in AND taxes for the city you live in, would you still have to prepay taxes through RITA? Seems like I would be paying my residential city taxes twice. I would assume I would get some back, but its the government so......

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  11 місяців тому

      You may owe some to your home city as well as your work city so it's possible your payroll person is doing that for you as a courtesy and you'll just break even. That's the ideal situation and you won't have to pay anything on your own. If you're having it taken out for both cities, I would check in with your payroll person and make sure it's right.

    • @benkempf3686
      @benkempf3686 11 місяців тому

      @@SmartFamilyMoney thanks. I guess my question was, I'm getting notifications through the mail about pre-paying through Rita and if I don't I get jacked with late fees, but my city tax is getting taken out of my check. So in my mind I would be pre-paying on top of paying through my paycheck. So they would be getting their money twice. If it's getting payroll deducted I don't see why I would have to prepay through Rita, just to possibly get it back at the end.

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  11 місяців тому +1

      @@benkempf3686 OK I see. Yeah, I agree that's strange. Did you owe RITA in the past? Maybe they're just assuming if you paid them before you're going to have to pay again? I would call RITA to clarify if I were you. They're generally quite helpful.

    Can you do a video like this explaining how to file for a person under 18 so they can get their taxes paid in back?

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  10 місяців тому

      Do you mean for a person under 18 to file RITA? It's no different than an adult - they'd need to file federal and state and then RITA. But it's doubtful they'll get a refund from RITA - they don't give refunds unless there was an error or something.

    I do taxes for my son who has a business in Ohio. It is a single member LLC and I use H&R block. H&R block Ohio asks questions about what town you live in, etc. Does it take care of the RITA tax? or do I still need to do a separate filing on the RITA website for his business income?

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  Рік тому

      Local income tax filing is a totally separate form and no, H&R Block online doesn't do it. Local H&R Block offices will do RITA on paper for you, I believe. When you have Ohio local income taxes, you have to file 3 completely separate tax forms: Federal, State, Local. Keep in mind that RITA does many of the cities in Ohio, but not all. For example, Cleveland and Akron have their own separate system and you file directly through the city. Let me know if you need help figuring out where you need to file for your city.

    So if the tax rate is equal to the credit rate in the city that i live (with 100% credit factor), does that mean I don't have to pay Rita?

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  Рік тому

      Yes, that means you probably won't have to pay RITA, as long as your employer withheld everything correctly, but you still need to FILE the form with RITA if you live in a RITA city.

  • @johncyr3916
    @johncyr3916 Рік тому

    Hi Cindy - RITA gives me a headache! My son has a business in Grove City (2% rita tax) and he has an employee who lives in New Vienna (which, from what I can tell, does not have any RITA tax). So should he withhold 2% for this employee since she works in Grove City? thank you

    • @SmartFamilyMoney
      @SmartFamilyMoney  Рік тому

      I'm not a tax advisor, but in my understanding, yes, they should withhold for the city of employment. I would call RITA to double check - they're actually quite helpful and this time of year, they're probably relatively easy to get on the phone.

      You definitely need to file in Akron (they have a separate system, not RITA) and it looks like you will probably owe 0.5% because the Akron rate is 2.5 and Cleveland is 2.0.
