A great project and thanks for sharing! Living in New England, one never needs to worry about having enough humidity during the summers but in the winter a smaller version of this will work extremely well. Thanks!
Tap water has minerals which will be deposited in a fine abrasive powder around the humidifier when the tiny droplets dry. Keep 3-4 copper "Chore Girl" scrub pads in the water. The copper ions will help keep any bad microbes in the water under control... but I would still dump the water and clean everything which comes in contact with water well with a strong solution of distilled vinegar and water once/week or sooner if you see or feel a slime start to collect on the sides.
This is brilliant. Do you really need the mist maker? I think the fan blowing on the water would be enough to evaporate the water, although not as quickly.
Great stuff! What about the mineral\salt deposits everywhere ultrasonic mist makers are known for? Do you use filtered water? They recommend distilled water I guess but 27 gal..
I use a Kenmore (Sears) large full house humidifier; the wicks are around $12-$18 for a set of four wicks, and I de-calcify in a gallon or two of vinegar once or twice before throwing out/replacing them. Vinegar is much cheaper than a new set of wick filters. I'll explore this possibility...
So, it has been over four years since you posted this - are you still using it? Anything you learned that you would do differently? I'm literally just down the road from you in CR - it is so dry this year. :-) thanks
@@OBrienGuitars Just built one for my basement where I have my 30+ guitars. This is a dream come true - a consistent humidity level and I don't have to babysit it morning and night with water. Home run!!
How much did this cost vs buying 4 smaller ones? Couple of observations: 1) I would not put the transformer on top just in case it falls in some day when messing with the lid. 2) At the very least, I would make sure this is protected by a GFCI outlet. 3) The autofill is nice, but you no longer need the big 27 gal tank anymore with that feature. 4) I worry about stuff growing in there. 5) Watch out for the metal duct cutting through the cord running out of it over time.
I just looked up all the stuff to make this because I just set up shop in a REALLY dry area and my humidifier isn't doing the job already. All the things shown in the video were about $350... so pretty damn expensive all things considered for a DIY project.
Great video! I'm building one too! Do you think it makes a difference having the in/out airflow on the sides rather than on top? It makes maintenance easier when there's nothing mounted on the lid, so it can be easily taken off. Thanks!
You are correct about maintenance being easier but you wouldn't be able to fill the tank with as much water and it would be easier to leak in my opinion.
@@OBrienGuitars Awesome. Thanks for your replies! Can't wait to run it and see how good it works! I'm going to use a 240v in-line fan from a laundry ventilation system. I need to push the mist along 6 meters of 65mm pipes so it spreads evenly in our greenhouse. Pretty excited!
This is very similar to something I built for my greenhouse. Question: A lot of the times my setup won’t start even after it gets power (it is on a timer) I’m guessing its because the sensor is not wet when it is on the floater. It starts working fine after I move it a little, but my original intention was for it to work automatically and just give it a check once or twice a week, and not everyday. Have you experienced something similar???
Quick question....when you connect the shit off valve to the reservoir to auto fill it, I’m assuming that you then leave the faucet your hose is connected turned on at all times. Is that the case?
Are you still running it? any failures or anything you'd do different? how about an update video? I am looking into building one of these for my guitar room/office thats about 24x24, I go through about 3 gallons a day with my 2 tank whole house humidifier, and am tired of refilling every day. Furnace mount is not an option
Yes, still running this unit in my shop. I use it so much I burned up the transformer and the ultrasonic disc and replaced them. Still going strong. I have a cement floor in my shop and it gets wet from all the mist and drips coming from the machine. I would not use this on a hardwood floor unless you have a way to protect it.
Thanks for the link and getting back with me ( I got all the stuff you listed I. Your video minus the tour today ! ) Keep it up with your videos and awesome presentation .A+
I don't know if it's an artifact of the video but that was not blowing out very much vapor at all I have a 5 head unit well that's broke right now I'm trying to get a replacement. But when it was brand new it blew four or five times that amount it was so thick you couldn't see through it at all it's through up a sheet of white that was impenetrable by human site
@@pollopollo3531 yeah I tried that didn't help. They're sending me a new one first overnight so I should have it today thank God made me my mushrooms won't die. Actually I turned off the 10 exhaust that goes outside in the one head actually keeps it really high humidity in there as long as I keep the inline fan turned off. Every once in awhile I have to go turn it on to make sure CO2 in that building up but I mean in a big 10 it's going to take a lot of mushrooms to it put detrimental amounts of CO2 in it
How is it working now almost a year later? Also what’s your RH perimeter set at? I need at least 60-80% in a 10 by 10 by 8 foot tobacco and cigar humidor room.Would this work or a swamp cooler?
It is working just fine. It keeps my shop at a constant 40%-45% My shop is almost 1000 sq ft so I see no reason why even a smaller unit wouldn't suit your needs. Contact House of Hydro for more info on the specs you needs for your machine.
There is a simple fix for this if your water has a high mineral content. Get a fish tank reverse osmosis system and install it on the water intake line. Problem solved.
As others have mentioned standing water can harbor microbes you don’t want - but a very small amt of bleach is all you need to prevent the problem. They also make both liquid and pellet chlorine feeders. It won’t be enough to impact the shop air quality but it will disinfect the water
Never use that crap silicone that you use on tubs it's horrible! Always use crystal clear 100% silicone it's tough as nails it sets up five times faster there's no comparison just a tip
A Reverse Osmosis and deionization system works great if you have minerals in your water supply. I use this one. amzn.to/3hvlmCR

I find the mist maker makes a huge difference. The fan only is not enough.

Yes, I have been using filtered water. This solves the problem for me.
Very interesting, thanks, Robbie.

How is it to clean the inside as minerals have deposited over time?
I drain the tank and clean it a couple of times a year. I also add a bit of bleach to the tank each time I fill it.
