There is no shame in crying from watching this film. You did great.
Thank you!
@@CourtReacts-zm9yv I have seen grown men cry after watching this.
I think with one guy, it was personal. He didn’t mention it but I believe he had a family member that was either in prison or had been in prison.
I cry at the reactions and I must have seen 50 of them for this movie.
@@mildredpierce4506 Men cry at the appropriate time, movie or not. They won't cry from physical pain though.
Red tells Andy "hope is a shitty pipe dream." That night Andy escapes through a shitty pipe. 😊
For some reason I cry when Red says... " I just miss my friend "
Everybody thinks they have friends until they see Red and Andy.
Perhaps you've already realized but this is Red's story, his "Redemption" from despair to his repeating "I hope"; the movie's final words. His name is even in the title and also Andy drives a red car to freedom. So beautiful!
Oh my God his name is in the title. All these years and I never noticed that... WOW
"Hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies." I got that one tatted on my arm.
Love it!
Good things die unfortunately. Everything dies
@@BenitoDarthuizen they sure do with that attitude.
its one of the few movies that make me cry every time.
I was tearing up while editing and needed to take a couple breaks.
@@CourtReacts-zm9yvyou don't have to edit out the crying...it bonds you with us. We have ALL cried at this movie. It is one of the greatest films ever made.
As I recall, the original story is very short, only like a chapter or two in one of Stephen King's compilation books but man did they make a good movie out of it. On subsequent viewings you can almost see the wheels turning in Andy's mind plotting his long game. Great reaction girl.
Wow! I thought it was longer. Very impressive.
It was a novella, one of four story's in Stephen Kings book Different Seasons. In the original, titled Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption, Red was in fact an Irishman and there was a series of wardens not just one. Two of the other Novellas were also made into Movies, Apt Pupil, which went by the same name and The Body, which became Stand By Me.
Fun fact: That poster of Rita Hayworth was the single highest selling piece of wall art in history. It was not only all over the US, it was the favorite among military men during WW2. It was only supplanted in the 70's, when the famous poster of Farrah Fawcett took its place. You can find that one by googling "Farah Fawcett poster". It's the one where she's wearing the red spaghetti-strap top. EVERY poster shop in the 70's had that one selling regularly for years. If Andy had still been in jail then, it would have replaced Raquel Welch's fur bikini pic.
It didn’t dawn on me that Andy went from laundering sheets to laundering money
Good catch!
Not overdramatic, we all feel it. Hope is the best of things.
They sat and drank with the sun on their shoulders and felt like Free men, but Morgan was probably the only "real" FREEMAN
Great point!
Did you know that this is based off a short story written by horror writer Stephen King? So was Green Mile…another amazing film that will make you cry
The Green Mile is on my list 😁
@@CourtReacts-zm9yvGreen Mile is another tear jerker, have tissues handy. Great film though. Stephen King is a national treasure.
One of my favourite details: when Brooks got out of Shawshank, the camera is pointing back towards the prison, when Red gets out, the camera is pointed out to the world
Shawshank Redemption is magical
It really is.
This has been my favorite movie since I watched it for the first time in 1994. I've been saying, "What is your malfunction" for 30yrs.
17:18 "Or he's just been there so long, y'all are his family."
That's part of it. But consider his situation overall.
The very ending of this movie is happy, but a _lot_ of tragic things have to happen to get you to that point, and I would dare to say that none of the tragedies are greater than what happens to Brooks. See, he was first convicted in 1905. He was 23 and fresh from college. He would shortly go on to be one of the few prison inmates with a college degree, and this put him on course to become the prison librarian.
Before being locked up, he had seen _one_ single car, which must've been an incredible _novelty_ to him. It seems safe to assume that car was _not_ used to transport him to the prison.
He was taken from a world with no highways, no automotive traffic, no electronic wiring, precious little internal plumbing, gas-powered lanterns, no radio or TV transmissions and no telephones. While he was locked up, both world wars, the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl period happened. Indeed, you could even say the nation was fresh out of the _Korean_ War, though the impact from that wasn't felt as much. Most roads in the world were dirt. Those that were paved were paved with cobblestones.
He was released into a world in which cars were all _over_ the place that were _completely_ different from the one he had seen. He was released into a world in which the average American had a radio, a TV, a telephone and indoor plumbing in their _home._
Suffice it to say, the world into which he was released was _profoundly_ different from the one from which he had been taken, so it didn't really feel like a release. He wasn't really going home. His home was gone.
The original ending was supposed to be Red heading down the road in the bus, but they thought it would be nice to reward the audience with that perfect ending. I don't always go for having a happy ending, just to placate the audience..But I think they got it right, here.
Yeah it was a good payoff at the end. I like to say that Red and Andy earned their happy ending.
Five words: The Green Mile. Bring tissues.
What a wonderful reaction! Thank you so much for sharing your genuine emotions with us. This movie is one of the most inspiring ever made. It's a tear-jerker, but for all the best reasons.
When Red tells Andy going to Mexico is “shitty pipe dreams”, it foreshadows Andy crawling through a pipe of shit to escape.
`This is my first time with you but not my last . What a great job you did and I want to thank you for saying something about the military . I am a combat vet . Thank you for this and God bless you.
You're welcome, and thank you for your service 😊
I have seen this movie 5 or 6 times. I always get angry at the injustice, and I always cry. I probably always will. It’s a great movie.
For Andy's three posters, he chose the most popular poster of the forties, the fifties and the sixties. Rita Hayward, Marilyn Monroe from Seven Year Itch, and Raquel Welch from One Million BC
This story is one of four in a book written by Stephen King titled Different Seasons. Three of the stories were made into movies. I thought the one story that has not been made into a movie was the best. Great book.
3:26 I want to point out something that's happening in this scene, because it becomes evident, later in the movie, when it becomes relevant. Here, Andy Dufresne observes the character of Warden Norton and Captain Hadley and determines, "These men do _not_ have my best interests at heart. They are here to do whatever they can to make _money_ from me; not to facilitate my reform. It is, therefore, in my best interests to escape."
Oh Court, this is one of my most favorite movies! SO glad you enjoyed it. I was right there with you crying. Hugs!
One thing every reacter misses in the scene where Andy gets Redd to get him the rock hammer is when Redd tells him it will be $10. Andy hadn't been there long enough to earn any money on his book. In the novela, Andy snuck money into Shawshank. Where did he hide it? Remember what Redd said when they were taking bets? 😉
I'm so glad you picked this movie. To react to! It is the best movie of all time in my opinion. And I'm so happy when there's a reaction to it. Because that just means there are that many more people who have watched it and appreciated it for what it is, which Is amazing
You've watched one of three Frank Darabont adaptations of a Stephen King story. The other two are also highly recommended. The Green Mile will undoubtedly be added to your list of movies that made you cry. It's also a prison movie like Shawshank but is decidedly different. The other is The Mist - which is straight up horror.
NO WORRIES
I STILL CRY EVERY TIME
I WATCH IT
AND IVE SEEN IT OVER 20 TIMES
LOVED YOUR REACTION
6:11 "Hadley busted his head up pretty good."
Now _this_ part, thankfully, has changed. That man died because he was taken to the infirmary at _night,_ in 1947, at a time when the prison physician was a position seen as basically just an _office_ job that you could do for eight hours a day, 40 hours a week, and then just go home. Because he was taken there at night, there were no medical personnel on duty, and he was left to just deteriorate until morning when the physician came in.
Nowadays, there are regulations entitling all offenders to round-the-clock medical care. Every prison has medical personnel on duty, 24-7.
The photo on Red's file is his son, who also shouts Fresh Fish at the start of the movie. Unbelievable film, with a superb Thomas Newman score.
Court, that laugh of yours when the warden rips down the poster....that made my day.
No shame in crying. It hits me every time. Greatest movie of all time..
Definitely a tear jerker, your in good company, no apologies necessary. Hearing your thoughts afterwards reminded me that the original ending of Shawshank did not show them reuniting on the beach. I believe it ended at Red's "I hope" line on the bus. But, after the producers screened the film for some test audiences (who generally wanted to see them back together), they went back and changed it. Just wanted to share that with you.
Your tears got me at the end. Love those kind of reactions.
Great reaction, thanks and all the best for coming reactions from the Netherlands!🖖
BTW the record was Mozart's Aria "The Marriage of Figaro" by a Duet sjnging about plotting against The Count. Also Red calls Andy's plan a "shitty pipe dream LOL😅 Not in the book, they added that last cathartic scene that finally makes you cry!
Great reaction Courtney! Another tremendous Steven King/Frank Darabont film is "The Green Mile". This one has often been reacted to, and a great subscription booster. Do NOT forget the tissues! Enjoy.
20:34 I've gotten the impression the Warden does not allow music in this prison.
In the opening court scene, Andy says regarding his wife.. " She left anyway to go stay with Mr. Quentin.." Any foreshadowing here? San Quentin , California is one of the most infamous prisons in the world. A few moments later, Andy was sentenced to prison.
And Don't apologize for crying, you were being authentic.
10:49 "I tried learning chess myself, and it's like... just trying to remember where all the pieces can go, and stuff, and it's a lot."
😕The initial layout of the pieces on the board? Oh, that's nothin'. It might _seem_ like a lot, but once you got it, you know how _every_ game starts.
Nice, sincere reaction. Thank you!
This was a great movie, a real pleasure to watch. Takes you from laughing to crying, any movie that can do that is really good.
32:17 Now consider this shot for just a moment.
We see the surprise on Warden Norton's face. Of course, that's no surprise. Warden Norton is the main party Andy was trying to keep this hidden from.
We see the surprise on Captain Hadley's face. Of course, that's no surprise, _either._ If Captain Hadley had found out, Warden _Norton_ probably would've found out, so of course, Andy had to keep it from _both_ of them.
But consider Red. Consider how surprised _he_ looks. He's the first guy in the prison Andy introduced himself to, about 19 years before this point. He's the guy who got Andy the rock hammer in the first place. By this point in the movie, it seems safe to say that Andy has no better friend in the world than _him._
But we're looking at an _accumulated_ result, here. We're looking at something Andy would have to have been working on since about the time he got the hammer. He's been working on it and working on it and working on it, good times and bad. How come Red didn't know about it?
Because Andy observed a key rule when it comes to keeping a secret. He _kept_ it. As the old saying goes, "Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead." He was not in a position to benefit from Red knowing, so Red did not know, no matter _how_ much Andy wanted to share it with someone.
One of the best greatest movies of all time I can watch this movie back to back to back forever❤️❤️❤️💯
Great reaction. This movie was an all-timer. It's right up there with "Roadhouse." (Sorry) Yeah. This one gets to me every time. I couldn't wait for you to see the end. So awesome!!!
Now you have Forrest Gump and The Green Mile to watch.
Not many movies are life altering. This one and a handful of others do. Those I can watch again and again.
If you weren't crying at the end of that movie...then something would be wrong with you!
Oh, Courtney, I wouldn't call your reaction to this movie overdramatic at _all._ It's a wonderful film; especially the first time you see it.
One thing this movie has taught me about myself is that, growing up, I didn't really get a total sense of what makes someone a good friend, like with Andy and Red. A lot is said and done in society to romanticize the act of "finding true love," so much so that we tend to lose sight of the value of sincere friendship, but the fact is a healthy, well-adjusted human being is born from the _latter._ You've got to have sincere _friends_ before you can have true _love._
The guards inherited $35k would be about $500k today.
Andy's 350k would be $4.5 Million today.
The 2nd greatest movie ever made (Casablanca is #1), this is the 1st reaction of yours I have seen, subscribed!
Great reaction Courtney! I've seen this movie dozens of times and I love watching reactions to it!
Yours was great! I'm glad to have found your channel!
My only (somewhat rhetorical) question is: How did he get the poster back on the wall? 🤔
The tragedy is that this movie didnt really do well at the box office and became a cult classic later on.
Great reaction - the advice to react to top films is very good advice indeed. They are tops for a reason 😃
You just watched my all time favourite movie. Don't worry, I cried with you.
Yes, we all cry. Every time.
Great reaction I love the way you react and your screen you use
Byron Hadley, the captain of the prison guards, is played by Clancy Brown. If you want to see his acting origin, watch the classic Science Fiction/Fantasy "The Highlander." A cult classic that is forever in my top ten movies of all time.
Great reaction to a great movie. The Green Mile next and definitely bring the tissues.
The movie sneaks up on you. All of a sudden you are having a good old cry ☮️
Here’s a suggestion so you will be possibly the only person reacting to this particular movie.
The movie is the Well from 1951. As far as I know is not based on any true events, but it is definitely heartwarming.
I originally watched it on DVD and then re-watched it with the commentary on which made me appreciate the movie even more. That is one thing that you don’t get with streaming.
When I first watched it on DVD, it was not on UA-cam, but it is now. If you can ever find it on DVD, watch it with the commentary on.
You might want to have some tissues just in case.
This is Probably the Movie of the 90s and Based on a Stephen King story, Really Fantastic Movie
I really hope you get as many subs as you want. Thank you for uploading your very honest emotions. I sub'ed right away. I will be here for others in the future. Thank you for this!
Great review! Did you notice the rock hammer was hidden under "Exodus" in the Bible? For those that don't know that is the part of the Bible where the Hebrews escape form slavery under the Egyptians.
Brand new to your channel. You're the best !
New sub. Your statement about chess had me hoping you'll watch The Queen Gambit, if you haven't already, it's a great series to react to.
also reminds me of clint eastwood's escape from alcatraz, lots of similarities, but this one was over the top acting and writing.
Courtney, you’re doing so well and I hope you will watch the Green Mile.

Great Reaction!!! Congrats on watching the greatest movie ever made! Ready for a another Masterpiece?? The Green Mile. Also written by Stephen King and same director. Have a BOX of tissues!!! Somehow prepare yourself?!
The rock hammer was hidden in the bible in the book of Exodus, the story of a people becoming free.
don't worry, i'm an old man. your reaction was wonderful. where have you been?

um nevermind, that might seen weird out of context, just that, the girl teams were much more kind than my team.
7:36 "Why do they call you that?"
"Maybe it's because I'm Irish."
Because the _character_ is Irish; quite _glaringly_ Irish. Ghost-white pale with a shock of red hair. So Morgan Freeman, being quite glaringly _not_ Irish, is kind of an odd choice. I mean, he's not Irish at all. Neither of his _parents_ are Irish. It would not surprise to discover that he has not had a single Irish ancestor in the last 900 _generations._
But he also happens to be an absolute _chameleon_ of an actor. When he says, "I'm Irish," absolutely _no part_ of you feels compelled to dispute something that's obviously not true.
I know black folks with Irish ancestry only a few generations back.
@@ammaleslie509 Is one of them Morgan Freeman?
Without the happy ending, this movie would be unbearable.
