Thanks for watching! I want to clarify something from the intro-I misspoke when I said Franco Colapinto was competing in his second season of F2 when he signed with the Williams Driver Academy in 2023. What I meant to say is that he was actually in his second season of F3 at that time. He didn’t join F2 until 2024, as I mention later in the video. From what I can tell, the remainder of the video is accurate. Thanks for understanding! 😅
I think more people need to be talking about how impressive of a performance this was from Franco. He outperformed almost half the grid in a backmarker car, managed to keep a respectable hold behind Alex who is arguably one of the best drivers on the current lineup, and he smashed Logan's performance. No hate to Logan, i like the guy, but he was not delivering. Franco seems to have a hunger for winning and a sense of urgency for it as well. He talked about how being Argentine, relying on sponsorships and a lack of opportunities to race in his home country, to him every race is like the last. The sense of composure he has under pressure is due to this looming threat of not being able to race again, and i think that's a significant attribute to a champion mentality. Idk but, i think Franco is a driver to look forward to. He has the potential to achieve big big things in the sport, and i can only wish him well and hope he gets a permanent F1 seat eventually. Maybe 2026? Some more F2 experience + F1 driving this year will do him good and i'm sure he'll only improve even more and become a BEAST. Maybe one race is too early to get my hopes up, but idk i'm already very invested in him as a driver!
I want to apoint something that people that are not from Argentina dont know. last year in 2023 franco did an interview were he express that he lack the money to go to f2, so the comunity came together to give him visibility via twitter. a very famous music producer "Bizarrap" came in and start helping out to get sponsors such as Globant. thats how he got so much atencion and sponsors. if it wasnt for the Argentinian fans, the dream, that not only was from a little child, it was a dream of a country anda a generation, wouldnt become a reality.
Here in Argentina we are really proud of what Franco has accomplished so far, because he is the first argentine driver to race in F1 since Mazzacane in 2001 with Prost GP. These next eight races we will see him in tracks he hasn’t raced before except for Abu Dhabi, so the excitement is huge, but the expectations have to remain low. Let’s hope Franco adapts well to Baku and Singapore in the asian leg and see what happens. Vamos Franquito! 🇦🇷🇦🇷
I think it would've been important to add that this was Colapinto's first time racing on hard tires. Also, first time that he raced more than 8 laps consecutively, according to him. Impressive, cannot wait to see how the rest of the season goes for him.
Great analysis! thanks for the summary. As Argentinian, this is the first time in my lifetime that I see the whole country talking about F1, even people who never watched the sport before, everyoneis now excited and cheering him up. Saludos desde Buenos Aires!
I am very happy for Franco, no doubt, as I grew up in Argentina, but am also hoping Williams will benefit for all the attention and sponsorships this young man has brought to the team. Williams and Franco have a long way to go to be competing with the current top teams, but with the right amount of support all parties can make quick progress.
That Olympic race was held in Buenos Aires, despite it was not officially part of the Olympic Games schedule. We had six mixed teams, Franco raced alongside kart racer Brisa Puig. All 12 drivers raced together on track, the drivers' race time were merged to order the final classification. Current WEC driver for United Autosports, Nico Pino from Chile, also took part in that race, and ended in P3 alongside local kart racer Camila Almada. I had the honor to be the commentator of that race and MoC in the event's launch. Who would say six years later that boy would be in F1 🥲 great video, mate. Will subscribe now. Invited to have a look to my content too.
Wow, this is great insight! It’s great to hear about Franco’s early racing days and how that event came together in Buenos Aires. The fact that Nico Pino was also part of it is fascinating, what a small world motorsport can be! Thank you for sharing your experience as a commentator for the event, that’s such a cool connection to have. Really appreciate your support, and I’ll definitely check out your content too. Cheers!
One of the most amazing facts about Colapinto is that he's never managed to secure the budget since his arrival to single seaters categories in Europe back in 2019. This fact is important to note because it explains that he was never able to test the cars before actually arriving to the first round of each series he competed on, unlike many of his rivals on track. Prior the Italian GP weekend, he only managed to taste the likes of an F1 car on two occasions: The first one was during the morning session on the 2023 Pirelli post-season test in Abu Dhabi, two days after the F1 season ended. Zak O'Sullivan, who at the time was the first on the line in the Williams Academy program, took the wheel on the afternoon session. The objective on that test mostly was to help Colapinto get the FIA Super License, as he was the only driver in the academy who qualified to get it as he had more than 40 Super License points (he had 41), the minimum required by the FIA. The second occasion was the now famous 2024 British GP FP1 session. Unlike many of the other young prospects such as Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Jack Doohan, Felipe Drugovich or Ollie Bearman, Franco hasn't had any test on pre-2022 F1 cars. All those other drivers have been given the possibility to test on the old spec cars many times by their academy teams. Finally, It's also remarkable how he managed that 37-lap stint on the hard tyres on the Italian GP race, bearing in mind that his largest stint on the previous two occasions on an F1 car was an 8-lap stint on the Pirelli C1 hard tyres.
the kid has what ittakes, I expect a few points next 8 races, however they are new tracksfor him, Monza he knew quite well...of ocurse, he does not have a yop tier car yet, but that for sure will make him even better all around as a stepping stone if Williams lets him go due to other contracts in place for next season
These Argentines... everywhere they land, they catch attention, make noise and disrupt, love their cocky, rebellious, not politically correct, "atypical Latino", ultra passionate and charisma fueled attitude
Great debut by Franco! Just finishing the race alone would have good enough, but he even gained several positions, managed the tyres and kept up with Albon's pace. Only downside was the mistake he made in Q1 on Saturday. Baku and Singapore are going to be more challenging, but I think that if Franco is able to bring the car home, points are possible. It is a shame that Williams has both seats already taken for next year. Maybe if Franco performs well, he could draw some atention from Kick (the only team with an open space as of now). Worst case scenario, he spends one year as reserve driver. If Alonso did it, why wouldn't Franco?
The team only gave Franco 2 runs for Q3. On his 2nd try, GAS was on an outlap creating a huge distraction for Franco heading into the 2nd chicane. Next distraction was ALO on an outlap going down the back to Ascari where Franco had some drama, but he was already well down by then. They should have sent him out with Alex with 6 minutes to go when the track was empty. Alex got 3 tries. The fact Franco's 1st run was still good enough for 18th on an evolving track, and that he was 8th out of 15 when he did it, does show strong potential. A flawless race. except for some wheelspin at the start, but he did retake BOT into the chicane. Can't wait for Baku. He's getting a new seat that actually fits. He was in major pain after Monza and took a very long time to get out of the car. He even got a little team help to crawl out. An amazing 1st drive!
ARGENTINA!! ARGENTINA!! Vamos como cuando corría el Lole Reuteman pero con mas apoyo del equipo ARGENTINA!! ARGENTINA!! We are going like when Lole Reuteman ran but with more support from the team

En verdad FRANCO COLAPINTO Nos causó algo sorprendente...ilusionarnos con él al 100 %... Tiene una GRAN Capacidad y profesionalismo...es un tipazo...!!!😎🇦🇷✌🌏
I'm not gonna celebrate early till I see this kid be a genuine improvement over Logan Let's not forget what happened with Nyck de Vries in monza. Due to the characteristics of monza it's quite easy to overtake and what happens is that even the worst F1 pilots can shine at a track like monza I wanna see colapinto succeed but at tracks like Monaco or Hungary, y'know something of that nature cause frankly I'm tired of seeing one hit wonder debuts that turn into nightmares.
For reference, at Monza 2023 Sargeant finished 13th (14th race weekend for him) +33 seconds behind Albon 7th. So for now, in his first F1 weekend, without pre-season testing, Franco is a real improvement on Logan. Of course he is just starting out and still has a lot to improve and prove, but Monza was enough for him to earn confidence and hope of being a good option for future F1.
De Vries had way more experience in F1 cars before his Monza performance.. Yes you want to see Colapinto perform on a different track to confirm it but this is not that similar of a situation
