    When I cut a window in a cat pipe I use the cut off wheel and cut the two short sides and top all the way through. Then I grind about halfway through on the bottom and use that as a hinge. You can bend it out and back once without it breaking. Remove catalyst, bend the metal back into place with perfect alignment and weld as usual.

    Oh...Been looking forward to finally getting day out on my bike today after not having time for 3 weeks... Done my tyre checks this morning, and was greeted by a nail in my back tyre!!!
    Pressure was still ok, but when I pulled the nail out, it lost air... So do your tyre checks boys!!!
    3rd puncture in a year! CRAP!!

      Blimey that sucks mate... are you gonna plug it, or is it too big a nail??

    • @martincarey8620

      Moonfleet41 I plugged it to get where I needed to, but I'm a fast rider, and to be honest, I'd rather not risk a disaster for the cost of a tyre, so getting it replaced tomorrow.
      Even though I've always ridden bikes, your daily checks video and tyre puncture video have both woken me up to how important it is, and introduced me to a simple and reliable fix.

    I think that is an improvement, both sonically and aesthetically. Vance and Hines have become the knee jerk choice for HD right through the entire range. I have V&H slip ons which came on the 72, and they're crackly, loud and lairy. I'd prefer something deeper sounding, because you're right. On a long day it can just get a bit old.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 років тому +1

      Hi Peter, I guess this is an all Harley system now, as the header pipe is totally factory, although it's got no cat anymore, and the cigar muffler is a Harley item... so happy with that... will see how it sounds on the road !!

    The other advantage to gutting the cat besides weight is to prevent heat buildup around the cat back to the heads.

      Hey Jack.. with a Harley, you fit a fueling device, many available, SE Pro Tuner, V&H Fuel Pack. etc... and for best results take it to a dyno and have them set it up for you... ! but the dealer can fit it to basic setting if you can't afford the dyno time or have no dyno centre close by.!

    If you want to get rid of the shudder/vibration that occurs around 2800-3000 rpm, you can do the "clevis pin modification". Essentially replace the rear muffler mount bolt with a clevis pin, rubber washer and spacer. I did mine, and fixed the vibration 100%. Instructions are here: switchbackowners.proboards.com/thread/1950

    Hi Del, im watching this and not sure if i need to de-cat my exhaust ... i have a twin pipes from vance and hines, i see a round thing on the side of one of the pipes that looks like it does something automatically in the exhaust.????
    Maybe the exhaust doesnt need anything done to it, it does lots of popping when im de-accelerating ... what do you think??

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  5 років тому

      Hi Alexander, didn't catch exactly what your bike is? But the round thing you describe sounds like the standard Harley butterfly valve inside the link pipe, if that's the case, it's designed to stay closed under a certain revs and road speed and lets the bike breathe through one exhaust only... and than as you accelerate faster, the cables attached to that discs rotate it, open the inner valve and the bike breathes through both exhausts.... you can eliminate it, but you need to re-map the bike with a Pro-Tuner of V&H Fuel Pack, again not sure what bike you have, but that sounds like what you're describing!

    Love the look of the original pipe way more than the Vance & Hines. The tone is better IMHO. Even if the volume is the same, the V&H is way to raspy. Sounds more like a drag bike than the classic lines of a Switch Back would support. The Harley system looks proper with the style of that bike. Great looking bike. Cheers!

    Regarding the rear brake master cylinder location I think Harley has been designing their bikes so the average person can no longer do their own service on them. I think the old style Pan Head fish tail muffler would look great on there. I always liked them over the cigar shaped muffler but it did come in a box with the bike so no costs.

    Y'know, to anyone following the Colin Chapman Diet, eg. 'simplify & add lightness', the modern Harley must look like a medieval banquet. 'I know, lets rubber mount the engine, bolt the exhaust to a crane jib & use the muffler as a bar end weight, simples.'
    Also feel sorry for the Harley design engineers who were told to "hide that ABS unit, completely, whatever it takes". Nurrr : ) x
    P.S. Good luck to Dai - though, as yet, I can't quite see him sat at The Ace, ravenously wolfing down 'a full grease' to celebrate.

  • @JVerschueren
    @JVerschueren 7 років тому

    ABS on bikes scares me. Yes, yes, yes... it will probably stop the bike shorter than I can manually and it may save my ass sometime if and when I fail to spot some oil or black ice, but it takes away a degree of control over the bike ALL of the time and I like being in control (or feeling as if I'm in control, maybe?).
    In fact, I have to admit I'm a bit of a control freak when it comes to vehicles. If I get the impression a bus driver is a bit of a rookie, I just get off and wait for the next one. There's few people I'll happily get into a car with, even fewer I'll ride pillion with.
    I mean the guy I used to work for and his wife had 17 accidents between them over the 22 years I was with the company. It was as if they accepted having accidents was part and parcel of driving (BTW, who says opposites attract :P ). One simply doesn't get into a car with people who have that mindset at the wheel.
    Edit: just my imagination or is the factory aftermarket pipe vibrating more than the Pro pipe?
    Edit of edit: duh, it's lighter, so it would. (can anyone tell I'm an engineer at this point? ;) )

    The replacement pipe sound much better than the pro pipes. They look cooler too. I run a set of black Vance and Hines short shot staggered pipes with a stage one download on my 2014 Sportster "48". That along with a Screaming Eagle "big sucker" air intake system makes it a bit loud...but Spooky Fast!

    I had the same 57' tank emblem on my Sporty an I like the look of yours too. Sporty was painted 28' (Harley boys asked their aunt to help pick color an she came up with this Orange color). Mine was Harley Orange along top an tank sides painted cream white, looked good, like Your wife's. Your exhaust undoubtedly, at 26 lbs, an massive size drove you nuts! Your change out sounded more throaty, deeper an loader, but hopefully not too load. I can't believe, then yah on second thought, how hidden the rear master cylinder is located on your bike. My first thought was to say, "Kenny what you doing"? But it's all about getting bikes into shops for more money in hours service time. I can see Harleys reasons (bread) an I can see you moving that master cylinder right up front where cylinder belongs! Must be nice have shop just for bike, haha! You realize good cameramen need treats to stay camera steady, haha!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  6 років тому

      Good to know! My bike has the V&H slip on muffler and it vibrated pretty bad idling, or anything above 70mph.(..in between idle and 70 she was pretty smooth) I did the procedure outlined in Service bulletin M-1324 as well as the clevis pin mod and bike is smooth now at any RPM or speed....she still has a little of that shudder while decelerating, but not bad at all, and I can live with it. Seeing how you said its not a lot of difference, I will probably just keep the V&H slip on.

    And what air filter is that?
    Love the colour scheme, do you have a clip/pic with the saddlebags?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  3 роки тому

      The muffler is a standard HD accessory, you'll find it in the accessory range on Harley's website, same as the air filter too, just a circular K&N filter, all genuine HD accessories!

    Much better. Both visual and audio. The V&H just didn't look right. It didn't jive with the aesthetics. The cigar pipe has as soft rolling thunder sound to it, much "warmer." Pleasant?

      Hi Frank, it would be a good idea, had you just fitted the slip on's only and nothing else, then you could do without it, but once you remove the cat you have vastly reduced back pressure, so you may as well fit a free flow air filter and a fuel pack, which will really wake the bike up as well !

      Thanks so much Scott, I believe you can change the fluid, well at least 90% of it by just bleeding the visible lines.. you cant get to the fluid in the pump without the special equipment.. but if you can live with a 90% partial change... then at least you can do that.. ill come to it at some point and make the video... but busy for now... take care buddy, and thanks for your kind support... Hey Del. My 2014 iron has ABS and i changed the break fluid on it the other week. I followed the vid you put up and there whers no issues, I'm sure you would be fine to change the switchbacks fluid.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  7 років тому

      Hey buddy, you can bleed through the section from the master cylinder to the caliper, and I believe that, provided you don't turn the ignition on at any point during the process, you won't have any problems... and the same goes for the rear, but if you are looking to change all the fluid, inc. the stuff that runs through the central pipe work and the pump, then that does need to be plugged in, but you're right, you can change it if you're happy with a partial change, then maybe just every 5-6yrs get the dealer to get the full amount... !

    Thank you for the great tip at 20:15 about feeling the header bite when being tightened to the manifold, feeling like it's stripped then eventually tightens down with compressible gasket. I'll be swapping out my exhaust soon and have never done it before. This sounds like something that could have given me an anxious few minutes if not for your comment.

    • @Moonfleet41

      Most welcome buddy, if you are fitting new gaskets, (which is a good idea), then they will crush up quite a bit.. but maybe not so much if you're re-using the old ones.. you just need to use some common sense and feel for it.. Good luck and have fun.. Del.

      Nope.
      Got a Superglide new. I wish they would have let me test ride it first.
      Terrible front breaks that i had to upgrade, rear breaks not much better, terrible rear suspension i had to upgrade, ran lean and poorly from the factory until i reprogrammed it. Three separate oil baths? That went out in the early 1970's.
      I would think that a "premium" brand would be better.
      In 2018 there is no brand loyalty any more and younger people won't accept product fails like that.

      Hi Kevin.. thank you so much for your kind words, its great to hear that you have been inspired to do your own work, and i hope you;re really enjoying your Harley... Yes i still have the Switchback, i love it very much, im off on a 200 mile ride this Sunday to meet some friends on London... i cannot see myself selling it for another Harley model any time in the future...i do really love the Street Glide, and the Road King.. but when you do the figures, its the same 103 engine, makes the same power etc.. but they are both 50kg heavier.. that equates to a slower bike, and the dimensions are almost the same.. maybe 2" here and there, but nothing obvious when you look at the bikes side by side.. also the Dyna platform they built the Switchback on will always handle better then the heavier touring models.... i think once you have found your favourite Harley, you'll stick with it for life.. they'll certainly last you that long if you take care of them....I have done some recent videos on it. I did two videos on some brake maintenance over the last two Sundays. and will always load up any of the routine servicing and repairs that come up..but its not a project bike, so it wont be more then now and again, im too busy riding it..lol.... Take care and enjoy your Harley my friend.. all the best.. Del.
