  • Eskrimadors is a 2010 Philippine documentary film about the Filipino martial arts Escrima, written and directed by Kerwin Go, a Los Angeles trained cinematographer.
The film documents the development of the martial arts of Escrima, tracing its origins from the tribal warfares of the Philippines to its practice among international martial artists. It include interviews with grandmasters Ciriaco “Cacoy” Canete, Dionisio Canete, and Undo Caburnay, and participation of groups such as Doce Pares, Lapunti Arnis de Abanico, Teovel’s Balintawak, Nickelstick Balintawak, and Liborio Heyrosa Decuerdas, in reenactments.

Thank you for posting this! I lived on Luzon as a teenager and trained for 6 years under Grandmaster Florentino Pecate Sr. This was before Dan Inosanto coined the term "Kali" for what was still called by its Spanish-derived name, Arnis de Mano. In fact, the system taught by Mr. Pecate was primarily Espada y Daga, sword and dagger: one stick the length of your armpit to the tip of your fingers, and one the length of the tip of your elbow to the bend of your wrist. The students custom cut and polished their own rattan sticks. Grandmaster Pecate included hand-to-hand training and, in the spirit of the original art, advanced students also practiced with edged weapons, though that was solo-only, of course, no sparring. It was the best grounding in martial arts I could have asked for. When I returned to the U.S., there were no opportunities for Arnis classes or even like-minded groups at that time, but that base of training served me well as I went on to study both Japanese and Chinese systems. I continued to practice Arnis on my own, and even managed to interest some others unfamiliar with it. Maraming salamat po!

I wish this Filipino Martial Art will continue and grow as wild same with other discipline likes Judo, Karate and Taekwondo. And be part of the regular events in the Olympics or at least in the ASIAN games (different from SEA games). But the main issue is MOST Pinoys are not interested to learn this fighting art nor knowing it. Filipinos are addicted in Basketball. The government should focus and spend lots of money for this.
I'm an Eskrima-Kali-Arnis fighter, instructor and trainer since 1994. Also I'm a former member of the Philippine ARMY Arnis Team 👊🥋🥇

I think the best thing they could do in the Philipines is make 1 class everyday at school starting from a young age to have an exercise class / stretching that teaches beginners footwork & hand self-defence.
It could even be similiar to slow flowing movements and patterns like Tai-Chi vs Kung-Fu in Hong Kong, an compared to Escrima with a stick being for after a certain year or grade in school training.
It would be a great way to add Filipino history in with a Physical Exercise class at school everyday or a few times every school week, learning footwork/dancing.
Then later Eskrima w/hand self defence too. However long each class time is in Philipines then you could have a class 30-60 mins everyday at school in their gym or outside taught to boys an girls as the national sport, for history, national pride, exercise, for confidence, dance footwork, etc.
I am sure it would catch on again quickly if it became a part of the school curriculum for the physical education/Gym/Sports/Exercise class!

I've been practicing Silat and Escrima since 1993 and Taiji, Bagua and Xingyi since 2008. I like practicing slow twisting and circling steps with blades. It nourishes my brain and I circulate my chi to stay healthy and massage my internal organs to stay soft and limber.
The first thing I would teach someone is how to relax and root and circulate Qi. After relaxing, someone can learn basic Gong Fu!

Little know facts..but crucial ones..While there are elements of Indonesian martial arts in eskrima, it is actually a hybrid art with Spanish destreza vulgar. Eskrima is actually esgrima the Spanish for skirmish, which what also used to describe destreza vulgar. Spanish monks initially passed on destreza to the natives as a means to protect themselves and the Church against pirates and sea raiders.
It wasn't the Spanish that conquered the islands. The Spanish provided ships, steel and leadership, but the actual conquest was executed by Tlaxcalan warriors. The same Tlaxcalan warriors that defeated the Aztecs. Tlaxcalan warriors and Filipino warriors were responsible for defeating pirates and raiders, as well as keeping the Moros from south from advancing north towards Luzón. The next 300 years, Filipinas was not governed from Madrid, but from Tenochtitlan(Mexico City), and the Virreinato de Nueva España. As recently as World War II, a Mexican Eagle Squadron, training in Manila, took flight and defended the skies of Manila against Japanese aggression.

When i try to start studying Arnis i realize how important our Filipino Martial Arts or (FMA) not because you learn about self defense or to learn combat fingting skills especially on blade weapon, its all about our own culture & tradition that it becomes Vanish because of modern era. sadly that most of the new generation of the filipinos are not interested of our own martial arts. While the other people especially the foreigners who are the one who appreciate and wants to learn the FMA. because of the deadly, effectiveness, & beauty. Of our filipino martial arts Especially on blade weapon. So that is why im so sad about the most of the Filipinos ignore the Value of this art. As a beginner i want to learn more of them because we had a lot of different System of Arnis/Kali/Eskrima. Not Becausr you are learning about the arts you are also learning & preserve about the culture history of our filipino art i hope most of the masters of the FMA will past their knowledge of this arts to the other filipino people to continue & to preserve our original arts culture and tradition. Iets support FMA! Pugay! Arnis/Kali/Eskrima 🤩🇵🇭👊

I've been a life long student of San Soo, which is heavily incorporated with different forms of all types of martial arts around the world, and closely with Wushu Kung Fu for example.
In hand to hand in Kali I see that the hand combinations are very close to Wushu in terms of the very close quarters of the hand to hand movements of defense and offense.
For whoever might be interested in more details about San Soo - it's what the Chinese Red Army teaches the soldiers for their hand to hand fighting system.

I'm training in balintawak this time, and I became more eager with boiling blood since I always heard in the news the their are young maidens got rape and murdered especially the murder of the child actress judith eva barsi, I become more eager to train with the hope that my training in martial arts can save someone's life and bright future one day not just to defend myself and my family. Eskrima will be the equipment I have in my arsenal if that time will come.

In filipinor martial the use of sticks is the most basic skill. It is only when you master the stick that you progress to hand to hand combat. What happens if arnisadors don't have the stick? That is when you see their real skills.
