Bahaha “This is ridiculous! why do we have to eat everyday” 🙄 😂 I say that too, but now it’s in a funny way to my family. I say why can't we eat smoothies for every meal. Small children can even learn how to make theirs & I dare say they'd love it, in fact for an extra cartoon I bet they'd make yours too. And with a stool they could put all the ingredients away. I know many households would totally be on board for this well except those pesky Lil vitamins which I'm sure we could find in Walmart that cover most of what we need, Friends I think I'm onto something & just⁶ can't figure out why this hasn't become a thing yet, can you.?
I'm glad you yold the story of your friend's critical dad....you explained it so well....and it actually made me realize my own criticism towards my teenager regarding chores. I really need to check my negativity so it doesn't plant seeds of failure within my child.🙄
❤️ Most of the time I have to give instructions and walk away, and then avoid saying anything other than "thank you." There are always exceptions, we have to help them see things when they consistently avoid something (for my kids it's the bathroom sink drain that never gets wiped) but for the most part, I have to keep my thoughts to myself.
You have a gift of teaching. Thank you, this make me look at my procrastinating in a whole new light. Love your humor, it's like you were reading my mind. My alter ego thinks same way.
Another great video Rachel! I was listening to Joshua Becker the other day and he mentioned making a 3 item checklist every day. I have started doing that and it really helps my procrastination. I make one item about my home. Example: Declutter 25 items today. The second item will have to do with my health. My favorite one: Eat one big green salad today. My third item will be to do something with my brain. Example: Read 2 chapters in a book today. Little tasks but they really help me to stay on track with things I think are important to do every day. :))

Great video, Rachel! Maybe one of the worst sayings ever is: "If you can't do something right, then don't do it at all." Who knows how many of us have been damaged by that one, well-intentioned sentence. I know I was. Not only is it a stupid saying, when you think about it, but it's also judgemental, insulting, and demeaning when said to someone. It tells them they are lacking and that they didn't live up to standards. Honestly, for many people, that saying probably ends up causing the opposite of its intention in the long run. Now I say (to myself): "Perfectionism is a setup for failure." "Better is progress." "Good enough is good enough for me." My goal isn't to be lazy. Just the opposite. It's to break the paralysis that comes with unrealistic expectations. It's taken years, decades, but I'm finally believing myself and making progress.
Not only have you figured out how to keep your house under control, but you have such a great way of explaining the motivation needed to keep at it, and overcoming the pitfalls, and making it something I can do too. And you do it in a friendly way and speak as if you are speaking to a friend, and there is no judgment. And you sprinkle it with humor and caring. Thanks so much!!
I only allow myself to watch UA-cam videos when I am cleaning or doing something for the house and now I look forward to wash the dishes or fold clothes because I get to watch my videos and of course I love watching your videos!!! Thank you Rachel, great video!!
Not quite on topic of procrastination, but I decluttered 3 travel bags a few months ago. And then I was faced with a road trip and spending one week in another state. I was forced to empty the bag with my winter gear to use as suitcase. I wondered if returning-me would be annoyed with decluttering-me for the extra work of putting winter stuff back. But no. When I returned the winter gear stuff to its suitcase, I just felt so grateful that I was ready for next winter.
Thank you! As I was watching this - I realised I put off housework, because I expect it will take a long time. And to be fair often it does. But this is not because the individual tasks take long - washing the dishes, folding and putting away clothes, cleaning the bathroom etc. Each task only takes a few minutes. My problem is that once I get into it - I see more and more things that need to be done - and it can end up taking hours. I think I resist doing any of it because there are other things I want to do instead (read, phone a friend, go for a walk, get an early night... etc). It struck me while watching you, that I need boundaries. I need to set a time limit, and honour it. Stop cleaning when the timer goes off, and do something nice. And be consistent in doing this. Hopefully if I get better at this, I will trust myself more, and be less reluctant to start - knowing that I CAN do something nice afterwards.
really great advice, thank you 🤗 would like to add that one "feel" to do something, if you have a clear vision of the outcome that makes you happy. Because this produce dopamine. Excellent video! The procrastination explanation you gave made perfect sense to me now!!! When you mentioned the dishes, my mom used to rant and rave if my dad "let me" wash the dishes because she had to redo them all. So she literally would grab all the dishes and throw them back in the sink because she had to redo them. Then I started thinking about some of the other things I procrastinate about that you mentioned and some you didn't, and I was able to make a connection to negative criticisms throughout my childhood and life! THANK YOU for clearing this up! Thank you for another great video. This one made me think of an article I read recently about how most of us are dopamine addicts now because we constantly have a source of entertainment at our fingertips and so get a drip feed of "hits." Of course that makes it even more difficult to do things that aren't contributing to the habit, so some of the ideas you gave and in the comments about bundling entertainment with something you don't want to do are a great way to overcome this.
Watched this video all the way to the end....then I immediately watched it again while doing that dreaded load of dishes that had been it the sink for 2 days! Happy to say the dishes were in the dishwasher before the video was over! Thank you! 🤗
I wish I could do the same but I do my dishes frequently and they just don't pile up. I feel odd with no sense of guilt because of those misty mountains in the sink - I was so used to feel quilty - it was my habit. Sort of. 🙈

I am a new follower and love your content. This is brilliant. I always hate cleaning the bathroom as if it’s a 3 hour chore. It’s only 15 minutes! I spent ten times that stressing about it!!
Truth. I have a new dishwasher, after not having a good working one for quite a while. I just got used to doing dishes by hand, as the day went on, so no big deal. I still do this, even though I have that new dishwasher, which I rarely use. I love having all of the dishes done so they are always clean and ready if/when we need them. I have to keep my home in order, not only because I like it that way, but because when you walk into my front door, you walk right into my great room which consists of my dining room, kitchen and living room, so it always has to be clean and orderly. Always enjoy your videos 🥰💐🌷🌵🌺🌞🏜️💗✝️
Thank you so much for all of your videos Rachel, you’ve helped me so much and I feel it’s because you truly understand the struggles. I think one of the reasons I procrastinate is because even if I get things perfectly done today I know I’ll have to do it all again tomorrow. My worst is when I’ve got the entire laundry hamper done and then someone throws in the forgotten underpants from their bedroom floor, grrrr 😬
Yes, it has to done over and over. Somewhere along the line I became ok with “good enough “ and I do the dishes knowing the sink might have a cup, bowl, spoon etc. in it by morning. It’s still not a full sink, so it’s good. ❤️
@@Nourishingminimalism thanks so much for your reply, I’m going to take this approach now, thinking on it I see that it’s perfectionism that is holding me back, and I’m going to get a hamper with a lid, if I can’t see the strays I won’t worry about it until the next laundry day. Thank you Rachel, feel blessed to have found your channel 💕
Hi Rachel! The thinking does hold us up! It does dictate why we should not do things. At a certain time in life dishes turned into a nightmare! Before just piles from being a wife ,mother and at times the other farm hand. Along with contaminated water, mice, escalating spousal abuse the dishes started to get washed extra good.Forgot about that dirty cat that licks dishes ......needing extra disenfectant...Bleach ect...you get the idea.Overwhelming germs!Dirty cat paws....also.Dish washing became a sterilization job in itself.Got to get all that soap and bleach off too.Time consuming and fretting, hoping they were good enough. Espesially with that cotaminated water! I had to play the game.......bleach exes out spoiled water.Over the years dishes take longer than most. Of coarse now I think most go too fast for the washing and rinsing. As I got older along with over the years standing at the sink for about 3 hours a meal when last 2 boys home. Till an hour = smll meal about or2hrs big meai depending ect... I dont think its osessive ,others do....Lately so I dont dread too much I rinse fast bit of soap dirty dishes. At least they wont smell till I can get to them all.The one dish at a time concept.Maybe some, maybe all! Trying to work with new motto; A LITTLE BIT IS BETTER THAN NONE! ps .....Once when I babysat, the house was emaculate! But guess what ,to my surprise under the kitchen sink was a neatly stack of dirty dishes sitting in a little dishpan. Cute, lol.Great Video, and beaming smile! Thanks!!
I mentioned this on the fb post for this video but I'm going to add it here. I want to add for some people it may be executive dysfunction (usually part of adhd but I think other things can cause it too). without meds or caffeine (both are stimulants lol) it's more like "I WANT to do the thing, I'm trying to force myself to do the thing my body will not do what I want it to do so I can do the thing" and it SUCKS. In case anyone feels like they are struggling with executive dysfunction feel free to reply. With meds (more effective) caffeine (less effective) the making my body do the thing battle is much easier. Executive Dysfunction is why i want to become somewhat minimalist.
As for negative results, I don't get the Reward neurotypical people do. I had no idea until recently other people actually feel rewarded for finishing task like this lol I just did them because it was required and i want to do things that actually give me dopamine.
@@Nourishingminimalism yup just something to keep in mind for other viewer's 🥰 chemical imbalances are a whole new ballgame and adhd is seriously underdiagnosed in afab/women because inatentive type is most common. I probably only got diagnosed because I'm combo type which means I'm hyperactive and inatentive.
As usual loved ur video.... whatever u say it's just stuck in my mind and tht helps me...like once u mentioned clutter is bothering me and if it's not bothering my family then that's not their pron that's my prob...I have to clean it fory sake....love u ...thank u....ur words change my perspective
I have never had a dishwasher, although I wish I did. I wish it only took me five or ten minutes to do my dishes, but that's not reasonable without a dishwasher. I also don't remember any negative memories about doing dishes or cleaning, and I wish I had, had a dad there as a child. Some day when these women are old and alone, they will wish they had someone to take care of.
I watched this video earlier while I was combing out my hair.... it was on the watch later list and started as my daughter came in to ask me about making potato salad (she hadn't seen how I make it yet or she would have done it herself, lol), but she started watching it and really found this concept interesting.... not sure if it will change how she does things like cleaning her room at this house, but I think it might help with figuring out her emotions she deals with from the other house. Just thought I would let you know you are being heard by the next generation too.
I just procrastinate iver everything! It is not good at all! I surely feel no pride over it! My house is so messy that I do not allow people to enter and everytime I look around I feel overwhelmed by it! It was worst at the start of the pandemic, but somehow I found the inner strength and sense of worth to give, and throw , certain things away. It made me feel way much better. I am about 5 years away from minimalism as I cannot afford to throw, or give away, what I have in my house now. But I certainly need to reorganize and declutter somehow. Got to figure a way. This videos do me good as they bring some sense of hope to my situation. In my case, procrastination leads me to feeling messy and depressed. Venting a little here as it helps me to confront myself and figuring a way out!
When you work in a garden almost all day or have day and you get up so out from it and you don't want to particularly do anything Cause you're so tired dishes upside down in the kitchen
Help! How many forks, spoons and knives should I keep? There are 3 in my family. I know this is not entirely related to the video but I’ve been wondering that for a while. I already paired down the dishes, cups and glasses. Thank you again for all the great ideas. Little by little I’ve been making some headway in my home. Let me tell you something interesting that happened the other day. I went to my friends house for a birthday party and his brother and sister-in law came over too from out of town. We live close by and they hinted about coming over to our house. I made an excuse so they wouldn’t come over. I felt so bad. I want my place to be ready for visitors and I’m gonna keep working towards that goal. Now I just have to get my family to get on board. 🤦🏻♀️ 🤞
My two cents says; 6 spoons,6 forks, 6 knives,. Lots of people do what you did, dont fret! Its normal to want to be prepared, Espessially if they are judgemental! I let people over in the past. One because I have trouble saying no. Also I am so lonely, I will welcome anyone, even at the expense of embarassement! Lately Im changing. I am sick of those odd, rare [once a year] drop ins. Just enough to snoop, pry ect. Dont see them, or even hear from them for another year![prior to covid]. Your left embarrassed and somehow used. Some one rings doorbell, I will meat them outside! If I had a close friend, door is always open! Keep taking care of your self!
Lol...why do we have to eat every day...you might have something there.. There is more and more positive info coming out on the benefits of intermittent fasting and eating only when hungry...your kids won't fully appreciate what they are learning until setting up their homes maybe, but Love seeing them as part of the videos...pretty soon they will be talking on them too telling us some thoughts, tips for the younger mininimalist..lol.maybe it will help some mom or dad in how to include and have conversation with their children...
I would lie to myself telling myself that the dishes are done in 10 minutes, 1/2 hour minimum up to 2 hours is normal (and it's just the two of us + our dog). Better be realistic than lie to yourself...
Anna, I take long also to wash dishes! My son and me! Some think its too much! I think they are not washing enough. I dont tell them that. If they act like I am obsessive, I let them know they are not quite clean. Too clean/ not clean enough. I cant slop up my dishes! It takes time to get spit and food off. Then you have to rinse well. Health professionals say for us to lather well, roughly 20 sec. They tell us to also rinse well. So I figure its the same for dishes+ cutlery ! [health professionals talking about hand washing] Just glad to hear someone else is like me on dishwashing! I dont feel so alone! THANKS Anna! By the way Anna, If my last baby would have been a girl, her name was going to be Anna! Its no joke! But I had a boy!

Yay, look at you go!! 🙌
Thanks again for the gentle and nonjudgmental encouragement. You are helping my future self claim the title of former messy 1 video at a time!
I wish I could do the same but I do my dishes frequently and they just don't pile up. I feel odd with no sense of guilt because of those misty mountains in the sink - I was so used to feel quilty - it was my habit. Sort of. 🙈
@@Izabela-ek5nh Wow that is great for you! Maybe your hang up is laundry...maybe YOU don't have one at all! If so that is amazing! I was just sharing with Rachel (and the world) what worked for me...and how in the time it takes to watch a video you CAN get stuff done. Thanks again for your series Rachel!
@@jamiehemba6349 hey I only tried to say the videos truly helped me to achieve that - maybe it wasn't clear :) I have been doing the dishes and clean the counter and wipe the stove just as Rachel said - for a while. It was far different for me before :)
I am a new follower and love your content. This is brilliant. I always hate cleaning the bathroom as if it’s a 3 hour chore. It’s only 15 minutes! I spent ten times that stressing about it!!
The thing that turned it around for me was David Parker's "The More You Do, the Better You Feel."
I found this book life-changing and it is so simple!!
This was great and exactly what I needed. Thanks so much!
LOVE your paintings 🌹🌹
Thanks!!
Thank you. Love your videos . Such a gift of teaching . God bless you 💞
I needed this 👍
That so true... my past self screwed me due to all reasons mentioned here..... so so very right
Thank you so much.
So true!
Thanks for sharing Sierra! ❤️
Even when you are exited and want to! So maddening!
@@manyhats3846 yes! I want to do the thing but I can't get my Brain and body to work together to do the thing.
This is a timely video. I've been procrastinating more than usual lately. I even procrastinated on watching this video!!!! 😂🙈🙄
😂😂😂
Oh my goodness, you are speaking my language. xx
Just what I needed these days😉
As usual loved ur video.... whatever u say it's just stuck in my mind and tht helps me...like once u mentioned clutter is bothering me and if it's not bothering my family then that's not their pron that's my prob...I have to clean it fory sake....love u ...thank u....ur words change my perspective
I will procrastinate with phone calls! I hate the phone! I am fearful of bad news!
I don't like phone calls either. ❤️
It's introvertic issue. :) very common. I hate phone calls and usually keep my phone in a silent mode to not hear it anyway... ;)
I am anxious I will have to say no or some people pry for news, then say, .......Oh, I got to go!
Real important mind tour ...
Lol i can see myself in all of those !
Thank you! ❤️❤️
Love the apron. LOL
😂 my sister-in-law got that for me, makes me laugh every time I put it on!
The bonbons! Hahahaha!
That's comfort! 😂😂
❤️🌻
Rachel I have fallen in love with you. You are Amazing.
So true! ❤️
I still hear my moms voice in my head. .
😮😊
WOW you changed
Were you an acting major in college??? You are as funny as Patricia Heaton!
Aw thank you so much!! I’ve never even thought myself very funny, I feel very slow witted! But people were saying on my videos that they liked my sense of humor, so I’ve been trying to go with what I think is funny. 🤷🏼♀️😂
LOL...eating CAN be SO annoying! LOLOLOLOL
