    Im actually a expert and i work for a main dealer, so car comes in customer talks with service advisor then car goes to technician for a write up.
    The technician documents what he finds then all this information goes back to the service advisor who sends all the information to the warranty department. The guys that work in the warranty department we speak to on a daily basis we work very closely. So dealers have massive customer satisfaction targets. Dealerships can get shout down if they fall below target. Ok so with that in mind when a customer comes in i personally always try to push everything through warranty because its a win win situation so the dealership gets paid from warranty department and customers is happy. Dealership always try their best to get repairs done under warranty. I have got gearboxes and engines done on cars that are over 7 years old. When you go to the dealer be really nice to the service advisor because we hold all the power sometimes i dont even get the tech to do the write up i sometimes write it myself and get him to sign it. Tried my best to explain process hope it helps

      I'm hoping my Toyota dealer is this nice I know the local subie dealer will void a warranty for the least little thing.. cone intake filter instead of panel filter equals voided warranty.. anything other than stock equals voided warranty.. I'm hoping Toyota is different..

      @@Codytaylor0314 then put your car in stock form and go to your local dealer atleast get a diagnostic done and take it from there we have access to a international database on troubleshooting your car , the only time warranty won't pay is if you clearly crashed or damaged your car yourself as in not the manufacturers fault in this case no warranty unless the dealer is really nice

    A work around from a guy that’s been around, warranty work is all in the language. Any ASE certified tech can perform warranty work, doesn’t have to be the dealership. Tech says this broke, it broke, order the parts, do the work. Blow your engine however, tread lightly because that’s a bit risky. It helps to have a good relationship with private mechanics. Emissions parts are rarely covered anyway so get that exhaust and downpipe. You can also mod your car pretty highly but keep the stock parts to put them back on before going to a shop. Engine tuning is very risky, like Thic mentioned because that’s very hard to erase. I’ve replaced hubs and suspension components like arms and what not through warranty by a small shop. Keep that engine maintained and don’t wrap it out every single day, race teams rebuild their cars constantly for a reason. Camber gang, watch out. Airbag gang, watch out. Oil no change gang, watchout. The drilled a bunch of holes in my body work to install this sick ass wide body from eBay, you not only voided any corrosion coverage but you probably also totaled your car out. You da man, Thic!

    Piggy back tunes are 100% detectible, because if you blow your turbos or motor they will check if you overboosted, which it’ll show cause those piggy backs turn up the boost.

    "Accepting Responsibility" Bingo! Great vid. Although you can tune the engine and transmission independently, an engine tune CAN void your entire powertrain warranty (engine, trans, differentials, driveshafts, transfer case etc as they can be put through much more stress than allowed by the factory setup).

    I work for a dealer. Satisfaction is key and if you service at that dealer, and are a good customer. Often most times than others, a dealer will go the extra mile to warranty something out of "goodwill" or offer a split that's something like (60/40,70/30,80/20, or 90/10). Sometimes if there's not enough history and depending on what it is it may be 50/50. Techs of master rank or a good tech that can diagnose vehicle will typically see which way to lean depending on what the customer's car is like. Definitely not saying come in with a blown motor and expect a goodwill or split if modified. The most important thing is building a relationship with both advisors and MGMT. It goes a long way.

    Good morning,
    What about flashing a tune back to stock before making the claim, can the dealership tell?

    • @bluestonemetallic7
      @bluestonemetallic7 4 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately, the dealership will know even if it’s re-flashed back to OEM/stock. Basically, any tweaking in the ECU will store some kind of data in the system. I am speaking from experience based on late model BMWs.

    • @jonathanruiz3091
      @jonathanruiz3091 4 роки тому +1

      With BMW even if you back to stock their software is available to detect eny changes done to the EDM and all the error coded during flashing get saved and can not be deleted

    • @C3Motorsport
      @C3Motorsport 4 роки тому +2

      Software written to the ECU has a known value called a checksum. If it’s ever modified, even if you reflash back to the original value, the checksum will never be the same. This is how any software developer on the internet can prove to you that the software is original and untampered (I.e. malware or viruses). The dealerships don’t have access to that info, but smarter manufacturers like BMW do (FASTA). They can also detect piggyback units because they “trick” the ECU by modifying signals encountered to the ECU...problem is that the OEM signals have known values, and that tell tale little black box stores records of every time a sensor gets a reading out of parameter. They spend thousands of hours getting this data before it ever hits the streets, so you can’t beat that system. Any time your car is at the dealer and hooked up to the system, that data gets sent back to the factory via the internet.

    Just a dude. But a cool AF dude. And pretty well informed. The information in this video is pretty spot on. Working at a dealership for some years prior, they’re looking at the modifications that were done in respect to what failed. Your engine develops a knock and all you put on was an intake? Potentially they can deny your warranty. Clearly the intake isn’t why it’s knocking, but they are really wanting everything to be stock as it makes it very easy for them to approve and the paperwork involved. Warranty claims are important to manufacturers as they have some impact on potential recalls and things like that. Time is money with dealerships when it comes to labor and how many cars they can get in with paying customers. Warranties aren’t as profitable, so if you still have one, best to use it until either you’re certain you don’t need it anymore or it runs out. Great vid!

    What’s the best route to go with an extended warranty is it to get one or not. Would like to upgrade performance parts but also would like to have the security of a warranty for heating/ac and electrics but I called bmw and talked to them and they told me to read fine print of contract because most of the parts that break in 335s are injectors or rod bearings and those parts are not covered in a lot of third party warranties. Hope this helps

  • @marcosj9003

    Sorry if someone already comment but that is incorrect regarding a tune from Dinan. Your warranty will still be voided by bmw BUT Diana offers a "matching" warranty through them. So if anything goes kaboom they will cover it vs BMW. Also the major problem here is for people who lease cause once you turn in the vehicle BMW will most likely scan your car and will catch the tune at that point and could run into issue then.

    Piggybacks aren’t really detectable in the same way that flash tunes are. Every time your ecu is flashed there is a counter which ticks up by one and stores the date/time when it was flashed (it doesn’t record what the settings were, just that there was a change)
    In this way it’s very easy to see if the ecu has been tampered with.
    A piggy back however has no such record. It’s intercepting signals and altering them. You can only INFER a piggy back was used by looking at the relationships between different signals to imply that a piggy back was utilized (combination of fuel trims & a/f ratios & boost & rpm). The proof is a lot more muddy and is far from obvious like a simple ECU last modified time stamp would be.
    With regards to whether a manufacturer can void your warranty for a tune. The argument that could be made that if you flash back to stock, how can they prove a tune caused anything given they can’t definitively prove the tune I put on. While the dealer/manufacturer cannot definitively prove that you made a modification which then directly caused the malfunction (lets say the engine blew and you had a flash tune and you flashed back to stock) because they can’t know what you changed the settings to.
    They can state that they have strong evidence to prove a modification to the ecu was made (via the counter which you cannot reset) and this modification COULD significantly alter the reliability of the part in question. The argument boils down to, you changed part A, part A directly affects operation of part B. Part B failed. Because Part B was only designed to work with original Part A, we’re not honoring the warranty. This isn’t the same thing as showing part A did in fact cause part B to fail. It’s kinda the same thing as the “warranty void if removed” stickers on electronics. The argument is effectively “you shouldn’t be messing around in here, if you do then you explicitly take responsibility for all issues going forward”

  • @cjmoritz

    what you have to realize is that any part you put on in a specific area can & most likely will void the warrant. examples you put lowering springs on your car and the shock goes bad(even if its defective), they wont warranty that part now. I have an Audi S3 with an APR tune, my haladex pump failed, had nothing to do with the tune but they said it could therefore I paid out of pocket. when it comes to bolt ons the dealer/service dept can make the call but if the car gets hooked up to the computer and they find anything non stock its pretty much over for the warranty forever even if you go back to stock

    The protection you have as a consumer is the Magnusson-Moss Act. It’s a federal law placing the burden of proof on the dealer/manufacturer that your part caused the failure. That’s the source of this warranty conversation. When I moved from the US to Germany, it was a major wake up call, because the burden of proof is on the consumer to prove that their part didn’t cause the failure...not the manufacturer. The engine on my N55 M2 (COMPLETELY STOCK) blew at 23k miles. The initial warranty claim was denied because they took photos of my car and sent them to BMW. Because they saw a lot of carbon and the car was lowered, they assumed I tuned it and denied the claim. Needless to say I had to fight it, sign a bunch of documents stating I hadn’t tuned it, then they replaced the engine. Needless to say the blown motor was shipped back to BMW to determine the cause of actual failure. Thankfully I hadn’t done anything, but that would have easily been a $15k bill or more if I had.
    If you’re going to mod, like you said...risk what you can afford to pay for. Can’t afford a new motor? Don’t tune it. 👍🏻

    At 6:02 I think you lumped M Performance Exhaust and Dinan into the ‘BMW Will Honor Your Warranty’ category. For M Performance parts BMW will honor the warranty but I believe it’s different for Dinan. BMW doesn’t have to honor your warranty for Dinan parts but Dinan does offer their own warranty on it if BMW rejects the warranty claim. At least that’s what I got from all my research. Thoughts?

    I had a Dodge Neon R/T years ago that I spent thousands on and made it super fast. The engine blew because Grease Monkey didn’t put oil in it after an oil change. Dodge dropped my warranty and GM claimed no responsibility. I took GM to court, and won $5750 for a new engine, and Dodge was forced to reinstate my warranty. They have to prove your modifications caused a defect. Keep records of a reputable shop who installed the parts. DONT GO CHEAP. Keep all maintenance records for your car period. From wiper blades to oil. I have an Audi R8, and last Saturday I bought an 2021 Supra. Have many parts coming and I have a bench unlocking with Speed Industry. If you do it right you’ll be covered.
