The counter, the midfield and defense did a good job absorbing germany's pressure and capitalizing on their mistakes like pressing so high with 8 men. That was basically the game plan, let them come to us and hit them on the counter. It worked so well due to the German press. What went wrong with mexico was their inability to finish their chances, so many golden opportunities wasted. Other team will punish them for that. There really wasn't anything special about Mexico's game, because Germany played right into their hands. Counter attacking the way they did will always work when you have 50 yards between your oppositions defense and midfield.

Imo Germany main problem is they didn't take the Mexico side serious enough and the players didn't have the right mentality throughout the game. Khedira was horrendous and rightly subbed off early, he played as if he was the number 10 and he along with Kroos vacated the midfield allowing Mexico to counter so many times with passes simply through the middle, Kimmich and the lb thought they could play as wingers and positioning was terrible, these guys play for big clubs you have to adapt and respect the opposition sometimes.
