Built mine in a 22 ft x 15 ft patch of lawn in my city backyard. Recruited a crew to tilt it on side and carry it between houses to get it to the street when completed. I had the skill and gained the knowledge. It can be done.

As always, simplicity, clarity and realism ! Dreams are one thing and reality is another one…
I'm happy that you don't try to make people think that dreams don't need some knowledge and skills to become true !
Thank you Bob for your honesty and kindness, best regards from France !

Thanks for your generosity in sharing your hard-earned insights with us - you are a gifted teacher. (And an excellent videographer too!)
Bob, one factor I’ve noticed about myself, having built 9 canoes & kayaks over the years, is that with each boat I build, I seem to have acquired an increasing patience in completing each step of the project more carefully. A willingness to spend more time and effort on the little things, like fitting a joint just right, or taking the time to sand through a series of increasingly finer grits.
The first kayak I made, with my son, was a stitch & glue model from plans. It went fairly quickly, and a good thing, because we were anxious to get it done! My most recent project was a solo canoe I designed myself, cedar strip and fiberglass. I probably spent as much time designing & building a pretty Adirondack-style caned seat as we spent on the entire first kayak. And of course, it shows.
But the point is, I never would have had the patience to spend that much time on one of my first boats. Choose a simple project for the first one!

Great idea for a video while your hand is recuperating. Very interesting. Thank you. Hope to see you grasping tools very soon. Throwing clay on a potter's wheel is great for rehabbing hand injuries, especially for a sculptor like yourself. Been there done that.

There has been a Dutch Boatbuilder and wood-working-Teacher named Bart Linnartz (who died unfortunately in 2017). He constructed a wooden gunter-rigged Sailingboat (class-name "Lobster 12.5") for boat-building-beginners. He has written a great and detailed Explanation, more than 100 pages long, but not in English, there is only a German and a Dutch version available.

Bob not only are you a skilled artisan but you are a fine Gentleman as you are willing to help others. When I built my 14 foot plywood Jon boat I found a handheld power plane to be very useful in rough cutting bevels and removing the waste plywood after I glued it to the frames. I was lucking in that I was able to use one of the empty bay f the Fire Station I was working at. One thing I did figure out real quickly was only mix small batches of Epoxy as if I mixed a large batch we would get a call and it would be hard before I got back to use it :-(

  • @andymarshall7165

A few years back I built a small plywood boat (purely for financial reasons) and that boat gave me great satisfaction for a little over 2 years for both me and my wife. Before the rot showed up of course. But total cost was $287 not including motor and battery. Now things are going much better in our lives and even have a 8 month old grandson. I am very eager to build a simple fishing boat from cedar I am milling myself. Can barely contain my excitement as I am nearing what I feel will be enough wood to complete a 10' -- 12' fishing boat. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge.

Really fantastic tips, Bob! Thanks a lot! 😃
I still got a long way to go... I need to build my skills first of all, you know? Now that I have most of the tools I need I'm having an issue after the other and couldn't start yet. 🙄
Space is also an issue, but who knows the future. Right?
    Anyway... Some day. 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Look into Harbor Freight, they often run sales ads where you can get one of the portable shelters for just over $100 US. 10ft x 20 ft size. That makes the width a little tight, but workable. Also, check online at various retailers. You might be surprised at the deals you can find for portable shelters. Maybe add a 10x10 shelter for tool space if needed? Suggestion... add pool noodles or some kind of padding to slow the wear on the tarp cover, especially if you live in a high sun and/or wind climate. Also, if you are in a high rain/snow area, add some rope runners side to side to help support the roof from rain/snow weight. These portable sheds/garages are designed to be just that, portable and temporary. The gothic style arched shed he showed in the video may cost a bit more and take more time to assemble, but they will last longer and shed weather better... as long as you use a good quality roofing plastic/material.

      @@thomasarussellsr Thanks a lot, man! 😃
But, unfortunately, I'm from Brazil... And there's no HF around here, neither this kind of shelter. 😕
But don't worry, my space is already done and I already have most of the tools I need. 😊
The issue, lately, is that we're in the middle of the winter here and I'm getting a flu after the other! 😬
But soon enough everything is going to work out. 😊
      Thanks again for the answer!!!

If by "fortunate" you mean scrimping and saving to buy that next tool, inheriting some, making others. Getting that cramped small shop, making due till you can get a bigger one, then yeah, you're fortunate. By the way, my wife and I went to see your sculptures on Bellaire causeway. Beautiful to see in real life. Great video, love your channel.

I'm surprised you don't use a proper boat builder's bevel. The are much better suited to the trade and have two lengths of blade in one tool. They are not hard to make and would be a good tool making project.

Do you have a link to this tool, or a picture there of?

    • @gav2759

@@thomasarussellsr It's quite a while since I was boatbuilding and mine was passed on to an apprentice. While still capable of building you a boat, my total lack of computy acumen precludes my offering you one of those clever blue linky things. However if you search Google images for boatbuilder's/shipwright's bevel, you will recognise it as being the slender footish long with a long blade at one end and short one at the other. They would have been commercially available in bygone days but we made our own. Rosewood (or similar) and brass or a phenolic resin material (Tufnol) works well in lieu of a hardwood. All aluminium versions make a bomb proof version too. I hope you can make something of this.
