  • I'm back!! A few weeks ago, I won a cubing competition in Minnesota, which was my first competition win in over two years. Let's talk about the crazy circumstances around this competition, how I pulled together two of the best 3x3 averages I've ever gotten, and what we can all learn from it.

I’ve had such similar thoughts and frustrations as you with 3x3. I know it has to do with nerves because I don’t get it with any other event that I don’t care as much about. I try to go easy on myself because I actually think luck is a big factor - how my fingers are feeling on the day, the environment (noise, temp), the time of day… but certainly it doesn’t take much to get myself out of “flow state”. Really appreciate your tips here but most of all your positive attitude, whether or not you did well. Thanks Brody.

How to not win competitions: compete with you. I’ve tried it myself, works every time

This is so relatable. I feel that I turn a lot worse in comps cuz I'm constantly thinking about how I can mess up. Thanks for the advice and I'll for sure use it next time I compete!

Great video Brody! I'd like to add that feeling revved up before an important performance is a sign that you DO care about the result. As Brody says in the video, there's no point in trying to pretend that you don't care. Even though it's counter-intuitive, you might even try embracing the fact that it's important to you. This will motivate you to prepare and plan in advance--although don't overdo it--and then when it's time to perform you will know that you've done everything you can. Just remember that great preparation and planning don't guarantee positive results. Take ownership of what you can control and let go of the rest.

I have never watched your channel before but really admire your attitude and impressed with your solves. I am probably older than your dad and just learned how to solve Roux and CFOP but still above 2 minutes LOL. Brain and fingers don’t work as quick as they used to, but I still enjoy the solving. Thanks and subbed.

Be honest with yourself about how much you care. If you don't care then whatever, but if you do care, then set yourself up to succeed, and if you can't, manage yourself to expectations.
