This is such a great idea! You guys look fab!! The little kids are adorable! AWESOME cutting out! There are lots of beautiful handmade by Grandma quilts out there just sitting on the shelf in closets. I have seen them at Goodwill. I don't think people want to use them for sentimental reasons, but this would give them a new life!

Both jackets definitely look more flattering on your body than off. I didn’t expect them to look that good on. Great job.

Love the girls' jackets. Those will be coveted by others. I have a couple of 75 year old quilts that would make cozy jackets but so far, I'm still mending and using them on beds! I definitely would choose cotton flannel instead of batting. Fun show and tell, Whitney. -Kelly

All the jackets came out beautifully! I’m inspired to try one or two as I have a couple of quilt tops my aunt had. She’s not sure which relative may have made them but I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with them🧐. The little girls jackets are fabulous. I love the 3-D prairie pants/ pinwheels.

Love these jackets. I’m watching this a day late and actually today Feb 1 is my birthday. I’m still not able to sew because of surgery pain. I get my drainage tube taken out on Monday and just hoping that it will reduce some of pain. I’m definitely going to get this book. Right now I’m just enjoying the UA-cam videos and some walking. Any chance you can rent out Jenny to do some fussy cutting and making bias binding? Oh and ouch Jenny on the needle in the finger! I hope it heals fast. 71 today.

Thank you so much for this episode. I have been looking for patterns that are geared for artistic expression. I have recently applied some artistic expression to a couple of Love Notions Metra Blazers. While I may or may not buy the book, I will be buying some of their patterns to use.

Our original pattern for the Tabula Rasa Jacket grew out of our search for a vehicle for wearable art garments, and the Opus pattern in the book is built very similarly. Hope you'll give them a try!

Seeing a quilt made into a jacket is one of those things I understand logically but hate emotionally. I would totally make a quilt with the intention of making it into a jacket, but I don't know if I would be able to make someone else's quilt into a piece of clothing

    • @TomKatStitchery

I’m a quilter so I understand you. As a quilter I know how long it takes to make a big quilt like that. For me it’s hundreds of hours because I FMQ my quilts. Here’s my conundrum; my mom gave me a heirloom quilt. When she later came to visit and looked at the quilt she saw all the holes, worn spots. She told me oh throw that old thing out. Of course I didn’t. But I’m thinking of using it for a vest. Right now it’s sitting in the closet, not usable. I’m not sure it would hold up to being a vest either but it would be better than being thrown out or sitting in the closet until I die. I’m hoping my great grandma would want it used rather than sit in a closet.

@maryjopreti2627 we have a quilt from the early 1900s and moths have taken chunks out of it over the years. I repair it by cutting out little hearts from a very nice quality cotton I got a few years ago and I just sew the hearts over the holes. Then I quilt the area again to make sure it's all secure.

    • @FitforArtPatterns

While we don’t have any objections to making a quilt into a wearable garment, we can certainly understand the sentiment. Fortunately the book has several other strategies for making quilted jackets - including creating your own quilted fabric and incorporating orphan blocks. Check them all out!

Another source of quilts is Home Goods. I saw an episode online where a sewer bought a quilt from Home Goods and recreated a designer coat which came out stunning. The designer coat was $5000 and the quilt she bought at Home Goods was $50- $60.

If you consider in older times clothing was cut up and used for quilts so why can't the process be reversed? I have a Dresden Plate quilt my daughter inherited from her grandma which she requested last spring to have it made into a jacket. A couple plates have one fabric shredding so I said sure!

I think you pay homage to the original quilter. Tell Jenni if she got some blood on her quilted jacket that she just added her DNA to the project. 💕

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  11 днів тому +2

I agree about the paying homage. That's a great way to look at it! I will also pass that along to Jenni 😂.

For the project in our book that was made from a finished quilt, we preserved the quilter’s label on the inside of the coat so she will be remembered and honored!

Please don't hate the word "flattering", there's nothing wrong with wanting to feel your best.😁 No one is at their best when they feel frumpy. Even if someone is sick and going through something, there is a lot to say for getting dressed and feeling good about how you look no matter your situation.
I don't mean this to sound critical at all❤

Super cute! I’ve made one using a new men’s xxl sweatshirt for the lining cutting the pieces apart and using for the pattern too. It had set in sleeves. Such fun!
