    I think the needle would be driven deep into the earth. I’d like to see the math on the needle’s mass - traveling at that speed.

    • @gerrycrisostomo6571
      @gerrycrisostomo6571 4 дні тому +1

      You are correct. In my opinion, if a tiny needle used to sew the cloth can be made to travel at the speed of light and impact the earth, it will produce an explosion more or less the equivalent of 50-100 tons or 0.05 - 0.1 Kiloton of TNT. That is the equivalent of the energy released if the impact is strong enough to split every atom in the needle's material. He should not compute for the impact's kinetic energy model because the needle's material will not hold together upon impact but will instead vaporize instantly, and with it the dissipation of the kinetic energy. So in my opinion, that is the yield of the explosion and not as high as megatons or millions of tons of TNT like the large nuclear bomb that he said.

      Infinite mass for any physical object reaching that speed.

    • @gerrycrisostomo6571
      @gerrycrisostomo6571 День тому

      @ That is just a theory. There's no such a thing as infinite mass. The mass doesn't change with velocity but the kinetic energy does. And no matter what the velocity of the object is, the computation formula does not change. Kinetic energy is directly proportional to the mass of the object (which is constant) and to the square of its velocity: K.E. = 1/2 m v2. If the mass has units of kilograms and the velocity of meters per second, the kinetic energy has units of kilograms-meters squared per second squared. As you can see, the formula states that the mass remains at constant and does not increase with velocity. However, it's the kinetic energy (K.E.) that increases as the velocity increases.

      There's a quora question about how much energy it takes to accelerate a gram of mass (about the mass of a needle) to 99% of the speed of light and it's something like 110kT of TNT, which is about ten times the Hiroshima bomb, so it seems like the video got it pretty close. The question is whether or not this needle would burn up in the atmosphere. Either way it has a ridiculous energy.

    To the guy in the comments calling bs on the needle doing that kind of disaster: when an object impacts Earth, it releases its kinetic energy, converting it in heat. The kinetic energy is equal to half of mass times the speed squared. In this example, the speed is the Speed of Light, which is a gigantic number, and squaring it produces an insanely big number, so, even multiplying it with an amount as small as half the mass of a needle, you still get an amout of energy (and therefore heat) capable of causing that degree of damage.

    So... if mankind creates spaceships that can travel at the speed of light, then one mistake-if they don’t stop and instead crash into Earth-could wipe out all life on the planet?

    • @ThatWinterRider
      @ThatWinterRider 4 дні тому +2

      💯 we would be toast. For matter of even a tiny amount of mass to be accelerated to light speed it would take, and therefore have, so much energy it would have the power to make changes to the atoms themselves, matter would be ripped apart... which would have an extreme output of energy.
      But the people on the spaceship wouldn't have known any of the humans on earth at that point. If they did go out into space and come back at the speed of light, in their reference or perspective, we would have gone in fast motion by hundreds of years... if not millions of years, depending on the duration.
      But I am not a physicist... just intrigued by the concepts. I'd have to refer this to someone with more education... but that was the way it goes in my head lol

    Nothing would happen because of Relativistic dilation. Einstein repeatedly said that singularities/black holes are not possible. He wrote in 1939 -
    "The essential result of this investigation is a clear understanding as to why the Schwarzchild singularities (he was the first to claim that Relativity predicts singularities) do not exist in physical reality. Although the theory given here treats only clusters (star) whose particles move along circular paths it does seem to be subject to reasonable doubt that more general cases will have analogous results. The Schwarzchild singularities do not appear for the reason that matter cannot be concentrated arbitrarily. And this is due to the fact that otherwise the constituting particles would reach the velocity of light."
    He was referring to dilation/gamma. It's the phenomenon our high school teachers were talking about when they said "mass becomes infinite at the speed of light". This doesn't mean mass increases, it means mass becomes spread throughout spacetime relative to an outside observer. Time dilation is just one aspect of dilation, it's not just time that gets dilated. Even mass that exists at 75% light speed is partially dilated.
    It occurs wherever there is an astronomical quantity of mass. This includes the centers of very high mass stars and the overwhelming majority of galaxy centers.
    Our own galactic center is dilated. This means that there is no valid XYZ coordinate we can attribute to it, you can't point your finger at something that is smeared through spacetime. In other words that mass is all around us. It's the "missing mass" needed to explain galaxy rotation curves.
    Dilation does not occur in galaxies with low mass centers because they do not have enough mass to achieve relativistic velocities. It has been confirmed in 6 ultra diffuse galaxies including NGC 1052-DF2 and DF4 to have no dark matter. In other words they have normal rotation rates.

    Not to disagree with Einstein's theory I'm just having a hard time understanding the mass issue how much actual mass are we talking here? It's a paper thin small needle to push enough energy into a needle to get it up to light speed I think that the energy would disintegrate the needle or by the time it hit friction with our atmosphere for that matter. I guess there is no real world way to know because there is no way to push any object that fast with that much energy so far.
