OH WOW! Not only is Merv hilarious (in a good way), but I actually learned something useful. GREAT job mixing comedy and skill education. Loved It!! May your half brother Melvin rest in peace.
I bumped into the pool equipment with my mower and cracked one side of the ABS union on the salt cell. Water was bursting forth like Old Faithful. Used this method to heat up the broken union and remove it without needing to replace the entire manifold. Worked like a charm!
i am watching this as i need to replace the same fitting on the salt cell , any tips ? the author states to keep the heat on the inside top, but i think heat rises and to keep the heat on the top of the bottom? i am a bit nervous as an error will devastate my situation so you removed the female end of the screw union and tied back into the male pipe?
I'm working on my hot tub and I don't know a lot about the process. But now I know a little more. I appreciate the video....A Lot! Thank you. I think you saved me a ton of work.

I finally found a UA-camr I can relate to. While you deserve a whole bunch of subscribers, I hope you never get them because it changes a person and the channel.
Nothing wrong with this method if you can get the cement to bond well and do a leak check. I applied this technique with a washer drain. The 90 was broke in half where it goes under the floor.I put quite a bit of primer and cement on her and she set up solid. Not like its pressurized anyway
Disregarding for a moment the fact that this video showed me exactly what I needed to do it was also extremely entertaining. Count me as a subscriber! Thanks!
Thank you! Replacing my pool pump and don't have enough pipe sticking out of a valve to put a new fitting on so I'm going to try to peel the old fitting off.
Worked great! I was able to peel away a fitting and also peel away pipe from the inside of a fitting. Up and running, and no need make all new pipes/fittings. Also installed a union so I can put the whole pump inside for winter!
This is harder than it looks. just got done with a plumbing job doing this and it was a pain. Hard to keep from warping the hub the pipe you are trying to removing from. And yes the fumes the sucks. if you are outside use a floor fan to blow those fumes away from you.

Outstanding, Merv! This is the perfect technique to remove a short section of 2" PVC-Pipe that I mistakenly glued into a "T" fitting. Every time I trimmed some off, it was still too short. Measure once, cut Twice or More. Keep cutting till you get it right or replace and start over again. With my trusty HeatGun, I can now start over again so much easier. Oh god dude you’re hilarious 😂 it is so much fun to watch I had to show my wife, she’s not an easy one when it comes to laughing at things and she did, I must say you passed that test 😂
I usually heat up a hole saw slightly smaller than the id of the pipe, insert it, let the pipe absorb the heat, then pry the piece out with a screwdriver and needle nose pliers
Actually, JR that is not actually Merv talkin'...it's Helen. Ya see, Helen use ta have a chain saw in that bedside drawer until one night about 2 am, she wanted to initiate a surprise trial separation with Mr. Merv Himself. Evidence reveals that the fumes from the burnt up PVC Mervalicious has become rather unknowingly fond of, had taken a toll on his vocal cords causing unparalleled snoring. According to Ripley, Helen knew that the severing of those cord culprits would be quickly accomplished with her compact chainsaw before MervaBOOM would awaken! Well, it was dark @2am when Helen fired up her Poulan and the noise startled her so bad that she severed her own voice box!! While @her bedside in the ER Merv was relieved of Helen's recount of a "dream" about a giant Sequoia tree that was endangering Merv Himself's Workshop/PVC smokehouse. After several counseling session, Mr. & Mrs. Merv concurred on replacing the chainsaw w/the hacksaw. So, there you have it, 2 answers with one joint...PVC!!
There is a method I just learned where you can use a hole bore socket or whatever it's called that goes in an electric drill stick it inside the diameter of the pipe and try to get the closest fit. Then heat that sucker up with a torch and stick it in the pipe. It will also allow you to pull out the inner pipe as it melts the adhesive.
K B Thanks very much.Great to have a pro to talk to But please look at my situation in this video. Just exactly where would you cut back to? It would require a lot of replumbing if I did that.

Thanks Merv. I just always cut everything out, and re-glued it back up. Or bought some outrageously expensive bolt on coupler or something. I will try my heat gun on the next one. Don't pay any attention to the haters. "Live in the present moment" probably "lives in my Mother's basement". This was painful to watch. In fact I shut it off at 4:26. So let me save everyone a lot of time & heart aches. Everything was fine until he brought out just a heat gun. Next time cut the pipe about 1/4 inch from the fitting. Use the heat gun or propane torch to heat a hole saw that will fit loosely and not too snug inside the pipe that needs to be removed. Let it sit for about a minute or 2. Remove the hole saw with pliers, then use pliers to twist the PVC pipe causing it to collapse inside the connector or fitting. The guy is funny though!
May you please clarify? I have a 3/4 inch elbow that I have to remove . When you refer to "hole saw", the drill attachment cylinder thingy with jagged edges?
Maybe easier to saw out the elbow joint entirely and replace it with a new one. But that takes a trip to the hardware store. Plus you might need to adjust the pipe lengths or connections 🤔
This was good! the narration was the best, although at first I di not think this was going to work! thought the configuration of the joints would have doen more damage than needed!
Mine didn't. I just used plenty of glue. And, like I illustrated with that first pipe, it got really messed up because I was too impatient and not careful enough. By the time I did the second pipe, I had perfected my method and it came out perfectly. Plus, my understanding is PVC glue can compensate for a lot.

@@MervsServiceSecrets Yeah, Merv, it was a great video. I'm doing some plumbing work to replace a line of copper pipe with PVC, and I was looking at some videos on how to glue PVC pipe. Your video popped up about taking apart PVC, so I thought it would be good to watch. I had no idea Sam Elliot would be narrating. LOL But, I gotta tell ya, the best part was your line about your show being an artificial recreation of an actual do-it-yourself show that never existed. LOOOOOOOL I can't even tell you how much I loved that line. In fact, that one line alone made it worth watching, although it was also really cool to see you take apart a glued PVC fitting. What if I need to remove a fitting from a pvc line that's glued to a water manifold? I only have ⅜ of an inch they left me and I don't want to bore out the manifold
Must have been clear because I didn't see any residue when I pulled it apart. Although I can't imagine why blue wouldn't work. To my knowledge, the blue stuff is good for use when things are moist. So for example, if there were some water drops left in there before you glued her together. Hope this helps.
love the video, but what happens if the pipe catches on fire (too much heat gun). what if the pipe catches on fire and it's a gas pipe? inquiring mind want to know. can you show us?

Hummm. I usually just cut the into a long run of pipe and throw away the unwanted part, then install a coupler onto the cut pipe and install new. PVC is cheaper than labor.
I have to remove a 2 inch pvc p-trap off of a grey plastic basket on the bottom of the upstairs shower pan.....wouldn't you know the original plumber messed up that connection, now I get water on my bald spot if I'm at my sink!!!! ,......which is right under the upstairs shower. Can I heat it off like you did with the pool fittings???.......I like your style , here......not a plumber, but this looks alot easier than removing the basket from the plywood subfloor above me. I am assuming that I can apply that purple primer and glue and then re-attach a new p- trap.

Shh. Don't tell anybody.
it was ALMOST worth the problem i had to hear this guy's comments! cracked me up. (almost worth it. )
You should be a country singer ❤ You could be the next Trace Adkins
Oh, you betcha. Afterall, ladies love country boys.
love the video, but what happens if the pipe catches on fire (too much heat gun). what if the pipe catches on fire and it's a gas pipe? inquiring mind want to know. can you show us?
Them's the kinda questions my half-brother Melvin used to ask. God rest his soul. For reference, I address it here: ua-cam.com/video/9LU9OiPLKmo/v-deo.html
Just turn the water back on
This has to be Trace Adkins fixing that mess...lol
Gotta love Trace.
You sound like that feller selling breeches for Duluth trading. You'd sell the hell out of baked beans I know that. I'd buy a can and streak up a pair of underpants
Thanks James, motivating encouragement like yours is what fuels the Mervolution! Be sure to turn on your notifications so you'll be the first to know when I release new secrets.
HAHAHAHAHA MAN YOU THE MAN!!!!
Haha! This eases the pain of my current dilemma a lil. Thank you! Haha
You are so welcome!
Man you sound like a radio host, hell you almost sound like Mr. New vegas. Maybe even better lol
Thank you sir 🙏, showed something that i actually used today to fix a sewer line
Happy to help!
Hummm. I usually just cut the into a long run of pipe and throw away the unwanted part, then install a coupler onto the cut pipe and install new. PVC is cheaper than labor.
BigFoot Too , thanks for joining the conversation. There are certain situations where this little trick comes in handy. -Merv Himself
Thanks! you remind me of my heatgun! I have the same problem with my pool filter pipes!
No problem!
Great video, great voice, and quite funny too, the step-brother quip, lol. Thanks.
Sam Elliot is making videos under a PSEUDONYM?!
(Nice work, ‘Merv’ 🤫)
I can neither confirm nor deny that statement.
This guy should write jokes for SNL.
You should change your career to be radio announcer or commercial voice over you will make millions 😊😊😊
Sounds like Sam Elliott to me.
Not sure about that. Personally, whenever I think about using a heat gun indoors, my mind goes straight to "fire hazard".
Thank you! very helpful to me.
So much fun to watch your video, thanks a lot!!
