Caterpillar 3126B Oil Pump and Bearings Replacement

  • Since buying our 2000 Holiday Rambler Endeavor with a Caterpillar 3126B, the oil pressure has always been on the low side. In some rare cases, it even appeared to go below spec, despite running thicker 15W-40 vs. the 10W-30 oil specified by Caterpillar for this engine.
    Despite only having 92,000 miles on it (and 84,000 miles when we purchased it last summer) the cause ended up being the oil pump and bearings. I go into some of my findings and observations, including an updated style oil pump provided by Caterpillar and some bearings I returned to Cat to exchange, and then the oil pressure findings once I got it back together and running.

    Awesome video. I’m suffering the same symptoms on my 3126B. I took down my main thrust on the bottom side the coating was missing and it was noticeably wearing. My upper rod bearings were worn and starting to blue. Oil pump had play between the two inner gears. Had pressure below 10psi at times. I’m replacing all the parts you did and hoping I have a similar result.

      Sounds like yours is even worse than mine was! Yeah, these engines seem to have oil issues. I'm happy to report that it's been a good number of miles since and no issues, it's all been working great. Shotgun it and you'll be happy with the result.

      I hope so. I had a crack develop in the cheap aluminum housing on the back of the heui pump. I was running 15w40 idk if it was the cause or just age but that’s when all my oil problems started….food for thought

      @@mikehagerty8126 when I first got this I ran 15W-40 because that was keeping the oil pressure more acceptable (still low, just not as low). I’ve been running 10W-30 since and have been happy with that. Cat does allow both and in the marine 3126s pushing >400 HP the spec sheet calls for 15W-40 specifically. My guess is you didn’t hurt your engine with 15W-40, it was going to have that problem anyway.

      Good to know because I was kinda beating myself up about changing viscosity to try and gain pressure.

    When I heard you say 10w 30 my diesel brain said whoa ho ho ho , he'll NO. All respect Ted, but I'm just not a thin oil believer. Modern Cummins 15w 40 with 20% Lucas additive has got me to rt at 597,000 miles . I had a great diesel friend he'd even put 15w 40 in his daughter's car!!!!!!!!!! That's how much he believed in it. I just can't fathom any diesel motor using 10w 30. Anyway God bless you for all your videos. I've loved watching and listening to you Ted😁😁

      10W-30 in a diesel is definitely not a common thing. But, it's what Cat recommends for the 3126B, and so long as I'm getting good oil pressure with it, that's what I'll use. I was using 15W-40 before the oil pump and bearing swap because my oil pressure was low. As I understand it, the thinner oil is largely for the benefit of the HEUI system, which is known to be problematic on these engines. I haven't had any issues with my HEUI system so far (knock on wood). But I think the biggest thing for the HEUI system is clean oil changed on schedule (or sooner), which I also do.
      I'm actually a fan of thinner oil in the appropriate conditions, and also a fan of the higher spread oil. For example I put 10W-50 (instead of 20W-50) into my old BMW R1150GS, and that's helped it in the cold. Starts easier, runs better when cold. I still let it warm up a bit when riding in the winter before I get going.

    I have a KAL cat c7 do you have the part numbers for the oil pump and bearings

    The 3126 and the c7 is what helped cat stop making on road Diesel engines. Just a fyi if that tells you anything

    Whats the part number for the oil pump

  • @TheFracturedRooster

    Great video. I'm in the middle of replacing the pump in my '00 Freightliner FL70 due to low oil pressure (15psi idle, 29psi at rpm).
    Do you happen to have the part number for the new style pump?
    I pulled out a 2w8092 pump and have a 496-4800 to replace it. My research indicates the 4800 is the new style.

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage  11 місяців тому

      I don't recall the part number of the new pump. However, the 2W-8092 is an old style part number, and the 496-4800 is a new style part number. Somewhere around 2000 was when Cat switched from the old part number style to the new style (I'm not sure the exact year). So I can say that at least you have a newer part number part.
      The other way you can tell is that the new style pump is a Gerotor style pump while the old style is a gear pump.

    is the oil pan gasket reusable? what about the oil pump pickup tube gasket and second tube gasket? Were they included with the pump?

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage  2 місяці тому

      The oil pan gasket is reusable if it's in good condition. I wouldn't reuse the other two gaskets, and I don't recall if they were included with the pump.

    Hi, this video is super helpful. Thank you. I just bought a Trade Wind and it has a 3126 that's not running. What is the app that you used to monitor the engine parameter? And how is it hooked up to the RV? Thanks again.

      Glad you find it helpful! I use BlueFire for Motorhomes. I have the software loaded on an iPad (iPhone works as well, I believe they support Android too). It uses a Bluetooth connector onto the J1708 connector under the dash. You can check to see if your RV has a J1708 or J1939 to buy the appropriate adapter.

    It’s been a few months and hopefully a few miles since you did this work.
    Can we get an update on the long term oil pressure results?
    After the initial break in did you lose a lot of pressure?

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage  2 роки тому

      John, I've put something on the order of 5-10k miles on the engine since doing this work. There has been no decrease in oil pressure from initial break-in. I did opt to run 15W-40 this summer just because of hotter temps, but now that I'm adding an extra oil cooler I will probably stick to 10W-30 year round.

    Hi I was just wondering how do you manage to see all that information on your tablet I have a school bus with the same engine and would've to be able to get all that information thx

      I use a product called BlueFire. It connects to the J1708/J1939 port (make sure you find out which one you have) and then transmits the data via Bluetooth to a tablet or phone. It’s a great investment.

    @TedsGarage, can you tell us what the oil pressures ended up being during operation? Thanks.

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage  Рік тому +1

      Pressure varies some with temperature. Basically it went up 10-15 psi from what it was before, from high 20s/low 30s while cruising at operating temp to low 40s.

    • @tomkelly3620
      @tomkelly3620 Рік тому

      @@TedsGarage OK, thanks. Mine is doing the same thing. Low 30's while cruising. I'm going to change the oil pump and see what happens. If that's not enough, I'll go back and change the bearings too.

    • @TedsGarage
      @TedsGarage  Рік тому

      If you’re pulling the pan I’d at least check a bearing. It’s not hard to change them and I was surprised at the condition of some of them when I pulled them. They definitely benefitted from being changed.

      @@TedsGarage Did you buy a new or rebuilt oil pump? Did you get it from Cat or aftermarket? Cat wants $800 for a rebuilt one, with a $1,200 core. And over $2,000 for a new one!!! I new cat part were high, but good lord.

      Tim, I’ve gotten the oil temp sensor installed now but I have to install the EGT probe and run wires for both of them up to the front, plus run power. I’ll get it all taken care of before the next trip but not today, it’s too rainy to do any outside work on it.
