It was time to do the overhead on my Series 60, in this video I go into the process and what I found. Whenever you dig into your engine, you run the risk of finding a problem. That was, unfortunately, the case with what I found on this video.

Maybe you should consider "fixing" the rear closet engine cover to allow for easy access to the engine from the top. On my Newmar I adjusted/modified the engine cover in the closet area so I can remove it in about 5 minutes. This was a real improvement in allowing me to do maintenance from the top, i.e. fan gear box oil changes and engine crankcase filter.

I had that thought as well, and it may be something I do eventually. Now that I've gotten the hang of how to get the valve cover off pretty easily, though, I probably will leave it as-is.

I’ve used both Power Service Diesel Kleen and Hot Shots injector cleaner. I haven’t had to remove the injectors (and hopefully won’t), but I’ve got two upcoming videos that will cover an overhead adjustment and changing the rockers, which gets you roughly 80% there.

Hi Ted, Thank you. Great video! Nice job, You made that look easy. You certainly answered a question I've been having. Like you, I've also noticed a very slight vibration at idle (very minor) and have wondered if changing the damper would have any effect on that. After watching your video I feel comfortable leaving it as is at least for now. Also the engine has very low mileage. Thank you once again, hope you and your family are having a great summer!❤❤❤

Well done Ted. I have a 2005 Gulfstream TOY HAULER with an Onan quiet diesel 5500. Recently we dealt with hurricane Beryl. I figured the 70 gal diesel tank would last. To my dismay, after running the genny for a couple days, sometimes just for the microwave and AC, I lost Onan electricity. Odd is that I can get "shore power" fine when I plug the unit into a dual fuel portable genny. I checked the 2- 30amp breakers on the QD and reset them, I also reset all the A/C breakers in the home panel. So far I suspect the wiring block on the upper corner of the QD or the transfer switch. Most of Houston lost grid power....now 6 days. I may do as you did, and drop the unit from the coach and give it a once over. Your vid will be most useful. Only thing I would do different is use BLACK tie wraps instead of white. As a retired telco tech, we used plenty of black tie wraps which last much longer because of the black carbon content in the plastic. Second choice are the thin STAINLESS (with ball clamp) tie wraps. They are almost indestructible to heat, UV , chemical and corrosion. Visit me in Houston if you trip to the Gulf Coast.....good fishing and BBQ. Later Ted ;-)

Look under the bottom pan of the gen and see if your motor mount bolts have dropped down indicating the motor mounts under the motor have sagged or disintegrated. My bolts are about 5/8 lower than the pan so I think the noise is motor/alt mounts more than anything. I pulled mine out and did the same service but its still much louder than they where when new. Mine is a 2003 Kountry star. Thanks for the video, it reminded me how hard it is to inspect those mounts and why I didn't take a look at them.

    • @TedsGarage

Honestly can't remember, buying a few gallons should be safe. But keep in mind that draining the pan doesn't get all the fluid out, so after you do the fluid and filter change it's not a bad idea to then do another pan drain and refill after a bit to get more of the old fluid out.

    • @TedsGarage

The compressor will kick on and off with the temperature setting. You can set the fan to either run continuously on whichever speed you prefer, or have it in "auto" mode where it selects the speed and will kick the fan on and off with temperature. Normally we prefer to leave the fan running continuously while sleeping for constant background noise.

Very very interesting stuff right here! Now, got a question (may be a tough one though). When a Detroit Series 60 is at idle, why is there a slight whistling sound? As the RPM's rise, the "whistling" increases in pitch as well. I've always heard that "whistle" on Series 60 engines and have always wondered what that was. I remember one of the buses (an older Prevost H3-45 I believe) from a local bus company had the Series 60, and when it was idling, the "whistling" was extremely loud, and it idled a little lower than most Series 60's. The whistling can also be heard on a Cat 3406B engine. And on a slightly related topic, how are the ASMR sleep videos with my suggestions coming along? It's been a couple weeks since the last video and wanted to check in and see how it's going! Please let me know ASAP.

Yes. I have a link in the description to the sealant I used on this project.

Wondering where you got the DC powered AC Compressor and Driver? What are you using for Thermostat Control? I am looking to add AC to an electric Vehicle I am building and this masterflux Compressor looks interesting.

I bought the compressor and driver for MasterFlux. They also have a thermostat control box that you can use with a knob to select how much AC you get, but I'm setting it up as simply on or off in my application.

I wish I had your youth. Glad I'm not the only one that has trouble making simple things happen because they're not as easy as they would appear in the directions. You give me the inspiration to keep trying when things don't go right. 1994 Prevost Liberty Coach #270. Very good presentation. Thanks

I'm curious why so many diesel rv'ers are not interested in the engine parameter exhaust temperature (EGT)? I don't think there are any engines currently used in RVs that will self limit if this temperature is exceeded...I am sure my Cummins does not. Exhaust temperature is in the Bluefire list of engine parameters available so if I do wind up using this system I will include on my display. Any comments are appreciated Kevin

Hi Kevin, I definitely agree EGT is important, although on stock computer controlled diesels it's a bit less so since the computer calibration from the factory should keep EGTs in check. That can vary quite a bit, though, as I found out when I put an EGT on my previous RV. I haven't put on on the Prevost yet, and I may at some point in the future but it's not an immediate requirement. Bluefire can only display data that the ECU knows. Your Cummins almost certainly does not have an EGT sensor, so the Bluefire won't be able to display it. However, I did a couple of videos that might interest you on installing the EGT in my previous diesel pusher and then also how I lowered the EGTs (I got them down quite a bit from when I first put the EGT gauge on): ua-cam.com/video/UyZEdqaIkOg/v-deo.htmlsi=gIPTksC-12LUKLLy ua-cam.com/video/6iA9XPyhXPc/v-deo.htmlsi=5BjmP7KSoMDlbR4I

Did you notice any traction loss in the rain? I’m not much for snow. I remember my hot rod back in the 80’s rear tires were quite wide and the traction sucked in the rain. Lol. Thx. Oh i have a 2015 Newmar London Aire. I’d suppose it would be an option for me also? Thx. New subscriber.

I haven’t noticed any reduction of traction in the rain or snow, but I haven’t driven in a downpour or bad snow. You’ve still got a lot more weight distributed over that width than your hot rod had. I’d say these would definitely be an option on your London Aire. If you have hub pilot wheels then getting wheels is easy, and from there you have to see if the 445/50/22.5 or 455/55/22.5 size is the best fit. Really it can be done on any RV with 22.5 drive tires. I did this on my old RV, although on that it gave me about a 5% overdrive which may not be desirable depending on your power curve and factory gearing. Welcome to the channel!
