That's insane! Rent prices have literally doubled this year in all the surrounding towns in my area.

They don't account for all the additional expenses in home ownership. Like mowing, replacement of appliances, repairs and upkeep, utilities(where it's included in rent) to name a few.

The reality is that not everyone is not cut out to be a home owner. I've watched several new neighbors to my home and new home buyers think if they are able to pay what they spent as rent and be approved by a lender, only to find out after they move in that they have no budgeting skills or planning and are stretched so thin financially they can't afford the repairs like a new AC or plumbing issues needed to keep the house n decent shape.

When home prices go up home expenses go up for example home owners insurance, property taxes, mortgage payments.

If you don't plan on setting up roots for a decade, your better off renting and putting money into a REIT.

@@mjulianlee My comment relates to the cost and aggravation of buying and selling versus a REIT which can easily be sold in an instant. Beyond that, I don't understand your question.

For now, it is. Those who disparage renters are people who bought when prices were low and interest rates were low. They wouldn't want to buy right now either.

So she's enriching her landlord. There is a thing called "Lease with an option to buy" so all your rent goes to your downpayment. My place is worth at least 4-5 times what I paid, cash, for it, 20 years ago.

You would not have an interest rate that low if you bought a house in 2023/2024, which is the point why renting is currently cheaper.
