Always wanted an E36 but if it was an automatic I never looked any longer. This video makes me want to get an automatic just because they are cheaper and in better condition. And change it to manual anyway!
@@Mitrofanvlad doing that would make you waste more money and lose value on the car, instead just sell the manual and buy an automatic you would make money not lose
The automatic transmission despite the poor performance compared to manual transmission, has interesting advantage in heavy traffic (specially when the road goes upward), better fuel consumption, longer engine lifespan and comfortable drive. Everything depends of the owner needs...
Exactly. I swear every single person I've talked to about the auto e36 says its complete dogshit. Their minds are only on speed and stuff. I drive an auto e36 and it's solely for daily driving, idc abt speed or anything like that. What I have is absolutely perfect for what its intended use it yfm
@@ballemanden8460 manual or auto trans doesn't effect engine life span. If anything a manual would be better cause you can physically make the engine work under less stress. Having 5 gears instead of 4 and my auto has 220k and is just now having problems. But I don't think transmission type effects engine lifespan at all. I've had manual cars go 200k miles and autos do the same
plot twist 1 month ago got myself an e36 project car :)) paid for it exactly 400 euros in very good shape from 1993 with rust issues addressed already and perfect condition but its a sedan :D . Coming from my daily e60 5 series i just love how it drives . So much better driving experience if you love old cars than newer ones
Loved your review! I just got a 320i automatic but would like you chance to manual over time. Any idea what it would cost to let this done in a garage?
Manual swaps are pretty straightforward but can be a lot of work and can take a long time w/o the right equipment. I bought a ZF manual trans from Ebay for around 500, and the rest of the swap parts that costed me all together around 1200. If you had somebody do it for you, that's easily and additional 6-700 depending on who will do it. All around you need 2k at most to successfully swap the transmission.
What is the use of that button next to the auto gear stick, all I know is the "S" is for sport mode. What about when you press it from S. What the 1 opposite the S for?
Have you considered putting the newish ZF 8 speed in? I have the exact same car in blue. Would be awsome? Edit. If its been sat for years, as it obviously has done, the suspension will be ruined.

I have a BMW e36 323i automatic, I was always annoyed that it was a whole second slower to 60 mph than the manual variant. But I didn’t want the hassle of a manual swap, so I swapped the gearbox for a VW Golf GTI dsg (which I bought for £800). And I’ve never looked back since, I even installed paddle shifter with a lot of effort. And it’s also much quicker than the manual now 😎
The dsg is a fwd transmission so I feel like you're lying, plus how are you controlling the trans, it needs a standalone computer. A full manual swap would be significantly easier.
Noah Skaistis I’m not actually sure what model the dsg came out of, possibly a Passat and yes I did buy a stand-alone and let performance garage near me get to buissness on it

I had the same car 5 years ago , a sedan manual gearbox. It was a epic car to drive.
I’ve got a clio too, also looking at a dark green 328i. This is the most specific review I could get haha

It's what I did,now I have a car that gets complements EVERYTIME it's out. Clean,no rust and I know NO ONE has truly beat the motor
If you get it 328 no need to change anything it will give you nice and comfortable experience and its already boom

Thanks for the video, I’m currently buying the very same car down to the color.
What an INCREDIBLE video. This really made me want to buy an E36.
That car looks a beautiful thing. BMW really have lost the elegance they used to have in their designs.
I think you dont need to swap to manual transmission as the car already 328, if it was 318 or 320 its understandable
The 5hp18 is a good box, if it was a GM American box it would be the worst purchase.
how much?

E is economy mode, like normal auto, then you have winter where it always starts in 2nd gear and shifts really early like at 3800rpm at full throttle.
