I loved how they didn't like Smoke's OTG smoke bomb because it gave him a 45% combo...so they "nerfed" it by making it do a 107% reset lmao. And then when they patched it, it was still on the MK2 costume so you could choose if you wanted resets or otg smoke bombs.
Man seeing that MK9 ground freeze not be terrible anymore, what a flash of nostalgia that is. That's gotta be up there with some of the hardest nerfed moves in MK.
Im at 1:52. I watch less ‘content’ in general these days, and its been a long time since ive seen you and your bro on camera, so this may be out of date, but the beard! Epic!
Oh heck yes, I been waiting for this. I heard Cyrax was nerfed throughout the game and still ended up a top 3 character. It's funny when we think about how characters get nerfed hard with patches starting in Injustice 1 and the future games. Glad to see this beautiful gift this morning
The MK9 era was spectacular. This game was amazing despite how overall unbalanced it was, but mannn, sometimes a game is just so damn FUN that that doesn't matter. It's kind of funny that the first attempt at a modern MK ended up being the best one. Subsequent MK titles have gone increasingly downhill from here. My friends and I started having monthly MK9 sessions again. This game is still awesome.
I played this from launch but wasn't connected to the fgc. My friends and I played it almost every day for a couple of years... Never learned how to really play but that didn't stop the 3 of us from having the most intense fun ever. What an absolutely blast.
It's unfortunate how hard it is to preserve pre-patched versions of modern games. Especially with how nowadays new mechanics will get added in updates that significantly alter the game but unlike when old games would get champion editions and whatnot, you can't easily go back to that day one experience.
His nickname is Ketchup, I mean it's pretty obvious youd think lol. Great stuff as usual Ketchup! Imo this channel IS the go to when it comes to anything MK related.
MK9 not only had one of the best combat systems in MK history, but costumes as well. The costumes in the newer MK games basically puts everyone in a full body suit.
I think most of the designs slap in MK9 but the princesses were always just... Boring and unfitting for their position/personalities. I think it works for Mileena at least, but Jade and Kitana never rly felt quite right being so revealing.
0:18 one of the many beautiful things about the PS3 (console that gave too much) , vo to the installation folder , delete the current data , cancel the update and enjoy the vanilla version to your hearts content. Edit: Had no idea you could do this with the 360 too. So much we have to appreciate with the 7 gen. The only bad thing I can think of was online pass.
@@cid107 Doing this off by heart haven't used a PS3 in years. 1. Go to the installation folder (forgot what it is called , it is above to save data though) 2.Delete the installation data 3.Start the game 4. (If you are connect to the internet) do not do the update and the game should start as the vanilla version. Note: If you are using MK9 komplete edition it will likely not work due to being likely based on the first patch with all DLC characters.
The HD era started so many terrible things. Having to wait to install updates (especially on the slower internet back then), bad DLC practices, games getting delisted, series that began on PC started being dumbed down for consoles, always online games, waggle, overuse of bloom and underuse of colors other than gray and brown, local multiplayer getting shafted because of online play, Japanese developers trying and failing to Westernize their games (example: DMC), Games for Windows Live, RRoD and YLoD, and the greater cost of HD development destroying smaller studios. However, we did get some nice things, like the rise of indie games.
I really wish more fighting games would give us version selects, at least in training mode, so we could test this sort of stuff. SF4 kind of does this, but it's only for the final revisions of each packaged version and not every single patch, but it's still nice. And we can even use it in versus mode. Even back in SSF2T days we could pick SF2 versions of characters with a code, and they're allowed in tournaments.
MK9 was one of the first games I got along with my PS3 (The first and only console I owned so far). My mates and I spent days and weeks playing and then workshopping to compete in local tournaments. The characters we played the most were - Sub Zero (me) - Quan Chi - Jax - Kratos - Sonya Blade
You could probably do a whole video on Cyrax's MK9 journey. If I recall correctly, he could trap the opponent in a buzzsaw with a bomb out and reset a combo that way (amongst many others)
"No Kratos either" Lets be real: This game should never have launched without Xbox having a mascot in the game. that aside, I don't recall any of these details despite buying it day one, it's very nostalgic to see the game that revived the franchise at it's worst and then rise even further beyond expectations. (Also i hated Cyrax back in the MK9 days)
I loved this video. I wanted this game as a kid but was only able to get it when it was on sale on Steam via the complete version. Seeing how things "used to be" for vanilla games is amazing. Especially with all the complaining people are doing with SF6/MK1/T8. Love to see more.
MK9 will forever hold a special place in my heart and I feel is still the best Mortal Kombat. I was a Kenshi, Cyrax, Reptile and Sub player. Its pretty insane when you realize just how many tools Cyrax had lol.
This was awesome to watch. I'd would absolutely love to see you do a dive into the MK9 demo because man, I don't think I've seen anybody talk about the insane input delay in it. Not sure if the demo was ever patched since it wasn't really a thing to do during that era but it would a fascinating video to watch with your thoroughness and production value!
Imagine if all of kung lao's tech was discovered at day 1 before any patches. He would of had 2,4 low hat frame trape, 1,1,21 being 0 on block. And all the bird lao tech. Now again we know this stuff took time to find but technically he had all of this at day 1 of the game. Perhaps the most overpowered broken character in the history of any mortal kombat game?
I don't know much about MK9 techs but I remember Shang Tsung having a damage increase after soul steal move and if I'm not tripping, it used to stack. After doing 3 soul steals my damage was at least double and it didn't go away like it does in the current version.
Check Infil's Fighting Game Glossary. UA-cam won't let me post links, but just google it. Easy to find. Has all of the terminology across pretty much every fighting game. As far as the ones you asked for: Tick throw = throwing out a fast move that is completely (or nearly) neutral/+0 on hit or block and attempting to throw right after with the assumption that the opponent will keep blocking and eat the throw. Usually as part of a mixed up offense woven in between other kinds of pressure. Jail = Being forced to block for the entirety of a string/combo. Attempting to press buttons to get out of it will get you hit, thus 'jailed.' Oki = Okizeme. Japanese term for attacking an opponent while they're getting up from a knockdown. Usually implies a wake up mixup of some sort or a set of options that are hard to defend against as you're getting up. Another common term you'll see is 'abare' which is another Japanese term. It's basically just another way of saying 'mashing,' but the nuance is that you're mashing while you're at disadvantage with the assumption that your opponent is going to try to follow up with something slower and thus, letting you take back your turn.
Let's see some tag shenanigans! Absolutely loved doing 2v2s in our group of friends there were those select pairs that weren't allowed to partner lol definitely formed and broke friendships
now that you mention Vanilla mk9 there were a lot of characters who can do a truck load of damage not to mention the fact that every character has a reset combo property
I remember founding out a glitch back when i got the game. No idea about the version, but i know it was patched after a few years when i decided to play again. The glitch was hitting a charged back 2 into X Ray, maybe with a jump punch to bounce the enemy first, i don't remember. But timing it right would glitch the xray and turn both characthers 90 degrees sideways. Making they face or be with their back against the camera. Pretty weird and silly with no actual gameplay influence besides funny animation
Everyone hated vanilla Baraka but I swear I found some kind of magic with his available moveset and found some techniques that others never considered. I think it was a patch or two after release that ruined what I learned with him but I would love to go back as an adult and rediscover that 20-30% magic lmao
