ROAR TRACK ATTACK: dYstance - Rewindz

ROAR is thrilled to bring you yet another track inspired by, well, us!
Like our Latch, dYstance - AKA GAVIN STANLEY from Birmingham - is a 37-year-old who was too young to rave in the early '90s but has long been obsessed by that sound.
Also like Latch, Gavin fell in love with old skool rave, jungle, DnB and happy hardcore in the late '90s when his best mate introduced him to it all. Already playing piano and drums at school, he decided to get a Korg Es 1 sampler around the turn of the Millennium and started messing around with it.
Despite being a regular at Flashback and Slammin' Vinyl, among others, he only ever dabbled in production, only taking it more seriously in 2012 when his brother introduced him to Cubase.
Since then, he's had releases under the alias Gav Ley, mainly on Top Drawer Digital, and in the past year under the moniker dYstance, including this intriguing '93/94 influenced effort, Rewindz.
Gavin said: "Rewindz was, if I'm honest, partly inspired by the ROAR series. The scene split circa '93/94 that is often discussed has always fascinated me.
"As a listener who was too young to go at the time, I always viewed this as an interesting period, and I enjoyed both sides of the fence, although Toytown later on wasn't a favourite!
"I just wanted to make a straight up dance floor number that was uplifting, nodded to the hardcore formula of late '93, that people could just get down to.
"So I chopped two of my favourite breaks, layered it with some 909 four to the floor beats, created an M1 piano hook, stab and classic bass pattern and rolled with it. Sometimes simplicity is effective and I just wanted to make something fun."
Adds Gavin: "There are way too many producers and DJs to list as influences but it was the '88 to '94 scene ethos that fuelled my passion as a listener, raver and producer. You cant go wrong with peace, love, counter culture and a middle finger to authority."

Top notch, good to hear the James Brown sample without it being pitched up too much. A fresh way of giving a nod to the old skool without losing anything from the desired over all sound.
