It says 3.5 max on the inside of that chute, but this is rated to 4. How come?

Good question. That plate is manufactured for and directed at the rental industry. It is our attempt at keeping people from jamming the wood chipper as soon as they begin using it. Chipping a 4" branch does require a bit of experience with the machine, but once you are familiar with it, it is very easy to do.
