  • Homer Alaska is a wonderful coastal community on the southern Kenai Peninsula which has moderate temperatures all winter long. It is these ice free seas and warm conditions that allow a handful of charter boat operations to work throughout the entire winter targeting feeder king salmon as their primary objective. Capt. Shane Blakey's Driftwood Charters is one of those who can't get enough fishing and spends 200 days a year on the water.
Occasionally Pacific Cod, Black Rockfish and even some small halibut may be caught in the winter on these king salmon trips as a bonus bycatch for the day's outing. These immature kings comprise age classes from one year olds up to fish that are on their 4th year at sea. Fish typically range from 6 pounds up to a rare 35-40 pounder. Most fish average in the teens to low 20's but you never know when one of those bruisers will be the next one to the net. This video is just a FUN quick trailer teaser as a place holder until we complete the editing of the main video. Thanks for stopping by and watching. Much more to come this summer when the big halibut, lingcod, rockfish and migrating silver salmon become our targets. www.DriftwoodCharters.com

Incredible netting technique. What would he do if a large Chinook was heavy enough to bend the hoop? :38?
