Life in New Zealand is unique, the New Zealand landscapes are incredible and there's nothing quite like that kiwi attitude. But this videos gives you the chance to hear directly from a New Zealander what the worst things about living in New Zealand are and the downsides of the New Zealand lifestyle.
If you are moving to New Zealand or planning on visiting New Zealand any time soon, I hope this video helps! Please feel free to watch my other videos on the topic though to get a more balanced view.

Salut friends! If you are one of these delightful people who actually reads description boxes, hi there.
It's funny because after being away from New Zealand for 5 years, I've definitely realised that there are some aspects of living in New Zealand that I had totally taken for granted! I often get asked 'what is life like in New Zealand' from people dreaming of moving to New Zealand or at least travel for some time. I'm hoping this video gives you a few genuine insights from an actual kiwi into this topic.

I came from Ireland to New Zealand and agree and disagree with some of your points. I moved to Christchurch quite a few years ago. In terms of cost of living, i agree New Zealand is generally more expensive especially with food which is generally lower quality yet still more expensive. As for your services and industries being a bit further behind and not as efficient. New Zealand has a very low population for such a geographically isolated country, the reason Australia beats New Zealand in these areas is because their population has brought economic growth that allows them more leverage in the global market where New Zealand has less leverage and therefore has to pay more. The population needs to increase so New Zealand can compete in the world stage where it has cities that are hotspots for investment and innovation which in turn grants more opportunities. For so long New Zealand lost so many of it's people to Australia who seeked a better quality of living, thankfully New Zealand has progressed to a point where that is generally no longer happening as it is growing and providing more opportunities for young people
In terms of weather. Living in Christchurch is amazing, Europe is just as changeable if not more so due to many different factors influencing the weather. While you can get blasts of changeable weather mostly between seasons in Christchurch generally it's pretty consistent and no more changeable than anywhere else i've been. Coming from Ireland, New Zealand has a much sunnier and warmer climate and because climate helps in many ways to dictate your lifestyle it is no wonder so many people from the UK and Ireland move across to escape the more dull and cold climate
As for Natural disasters, think about how many people have died in New Zealand in recent years compared to those in terror attacks in Europe especially France, Europe is politically volatile. While New Zealand did suffer from such an attack there definitely isn't that political and social tension that is fueling it like there is in Europe. I feel much safer here.

I miss the unlimited data plans in Europe. I pay $29 nzd per month for 2.5gb and I always run out. Transport is so bad. I found it so funny in London watching people run to catch the tube when there's one every 3 mins. If I missed my bus in Auckland I would have to wait another 40 mins. I am from NZ but now live overseas, it was a shock coming back to NZ for a holiday, I found many NZ people quite superficial and many quite snobby/money driven and I'd forgotten how arrogant and insular many people are in NZ. Europe's cities are definitely cleaner, accessible, and easy to get around.

@@Helterskelter4 You're spot on. I've traveled around most of Europe, North America and parts of Asia and every time I go to these new places I'm always surprised at just how clean they are. Whether it be in the central cities, the suburbs or out in the outdoors I found there's next to no litter or rubbish and the countries work really hard to keep it that way.
The other thing that always shocks me is how cheap produce, fruit, meat and dairy products are compared to here in NZ. In NZ we produce all these things but it's still so expensive. It's cheaper to buy Australian beef than it is to buy NZ beef. Or butter for example, imported French butter is the same price as NZ butter.
All in all NZ has many issues and people just like to believe in this big facade, that NZ is great, when in fact we are well behind the times. The more you travel the more you realise this.

    1. Don’t need a phone; a simple internet connection will do.
    2. Sounds like Tennessee weather.
    3. Already used to owning a truck.
    4. Don’t want to travel, just chill on a farm.
    5. Housing market sucks here, too; might as well stick to my plan of living in a hut.
    6. Sun > No Sun
    7. Bring on some excitement; I’d rather watch a volcano blow chunks than Netflix.
    8. Cost of living is bogus. You’d think local meats and fruits would be cheaper than exports.
    9. Southern accent would fit in fairly well, so works for me.

I think what you said in passing is very right, regarding the fact that going back home "you're not special anymore". I am French but have been living in Ireland for a few years and I completely relate to that. I thing it is a hard thing to admit because it does sound sort of narcissistic but I think all expats carry with them this element of being different. While sometimes that can be annoying, it is also a great conversation starter, something that makes you "interesting". I like that you admitted that because that's something I absolutely relate to. And I don't think that's bad at all, I think it's just the way we are, as expats. We like the challenge, like being apart, for better of worse. I do notice in my expat friends that we are all people who, albeit in different ways, actually enjoy being different. Anyway, I thought that was really clever and cool of you to bring that up :)

    • @LauraMorland
      @LauraMorland 3 роки тому

As an American living in France, I find your comment very interesting! I guess it's true that I enjoy being "different"... but of course I don't have much of a choice. I realize that my accent and my imperfect French is part of my personality here, but sometimes it's nice when I am on a Zoom call in English (I'm writing this at the end of the "Covid year 2020") not to be distinguished by any "difference," just to be myself, with a perfect command of my native language and culture as a given.
So do you plan to live the rest of your life in Ireland? My first (late) husband was Irish, and I do love that country. The son of my upstairs neighbor here in Paris has been living in Kilkenny for a number of years now, and his mum says that Paris ne lui manque pas du tout !
By the way, Rocky Dunes, your English is *amazing* -- not one single fault or giveaway that you are not a native speaker. Chapeau!

I laughed so much when you talked about living in a high rise in Wellington, not sure they even really have a high rise! We lived in Christchurch for 4 years and had just arrived a few weeks before the Feb 2011 earthquake but we had flown out of Brisbane the day before the floods hit. Then moved up to a little country area about halfway between Nelson and Blenheim a year before the Kaikoura earthquake, we got flooded in the day after due to all the rain. Definitely over earthquakes. The rain is great after living in a drought area for 10 or so years before moving to Christchurch but after the first 6 months of cold and wet we really started to miss the hot and dry. And finally sandflies!!!!! We had this beautiful river alongside our property for the last 4 years but with that comes the sandflies, do not miss them at all!!!

The main message that sticks out for me is that NOWHERE IS PERFECT. Every country on earth has its issues it's good points and the bad.
These videos provide a valued insight into the practical reality of moving to another country and dealing with the cost of living and holding down a job. Going to say New Zealand for a 2 week break it's fine and you think yeh I could live there but actually emigrating there or anywhere else is a wholly different ball game...

It’s so laid-back and stress free. I really miss the mornings out there. And no pollution. It is really a breathe of fresh air.
