We wanted to add a short review section of Bloodstained into this video but the timing just didn't match up. But since finishing and releasing this video, we've had a chance to really sink our teeth into the game and we think Bloodstained is great! Still can't yet say something like "Better than Symphony of the Night" but it's definitely holding its own with other Metroidvania titles that are out right now and as far as Kickstarter games goes, Iga delivered on this one!
I wonder if this might revive the model.
Sadly I'm going to wait a week to get my copy
I'm glad about that... I gotta wait to get it and I'm avoiding any spoilers. New SSFF would have broken that embargo (some things you see, you click).

Let me remove that wonder.
Bloodstained Ritual of the Night is a fantastic game and well worth the wait.
I agree, it's such a joy to see this one be the success. I'm loving it. Samurai Snake (David Hayter) is the best.
I just finished the game earlier and I'm already gonna dive into Hard Mode. Too much fun.

Kickstarter Bloody Roar when?
I'd love for Bloody Roar to return, but it's unlikely to happen.
"I will prove them wrong!"
I'm a backer of the game. Iga and his team did an excellent job with the game. I didn't so much as care about the extra stuff or stretch goals. I just wanted another Symphony of the Night era Castlevania game and that's what I got. I also backed Mighty No. 9 and didn't even finish one level because of how bad it was. Bloodstained is a far cry from Mighty No. 9 and thank goodness it turned out great.
Backer too here, and I love it too. Also gotta say, the constant backer updates very fantastic. Very transparent, honest and fair and always thinking of quality and the gamer first.
RoTN surpassed my expectations. It's now one of the greatest games of all time. Yes, I love it that much, it's such a fantastic experience in gaming.
Another backer. Sadly I changed to the Switch version a while back, and that got delayed a week so I have yet to play it. Then I have to wait for shipping. Can't wait though, and Hollow Knight has been holding my interest in the meantime.
I was too late for Kickstarter but now I can play thanks to you guys. This is a good successor of the SOTN. Maybe even better game.
Now my support for IGA is 7 copies (physical and digital for several platforms) I've just buyed. For me this is a GOTY.

Igarashi is a fucking legend. Hope his game does really well and Bloodstained goes on and on.
It will. 95% into the game and I still can't stop. It's all I've done for 3 days.
What's it like, I hear you say? Take Symphony of the Night as the skeleton, build on it using the 3 DS castlevanias, and finally understand that 4 developers working on graphics paid off. There is your game.
@@DocMcCray you're correct but it's even more than that it's my ten-year-old self's wet dream of everything I thought a video game should be
The dude has a good head on his shoulders.
I remember during the final pre-release Twitch stream for the Kickstarter everyone around him was freaking out over the multiple millions they were being backed for, and IGA's sentiments were to the tune of "yeah, that's nice, can I finish playing this level of Shovel Knight on stream _first,_ please?"
He knows where his priorities lie.
3 years later and you're getting your wish. Iga is already working on another game.
Fun fact, Ben Judd is the voice of Phoenix Wright in the Ace Attorney Series.
OBJECTION!
The first voice of Nick himself. TAKE THAT!
Ah yeah, he's Inafune's translator.
I actually love that Iga's team is taking the Shovel Knight approach to stretch goals. All that extra content would have added years to development! This way they got to focus on making a great game AND we'll get a bunch of new things to play with over time.
Plot twist:
a Kickstarter funded game is actually amazing! I love Bloodstained!
Fun fact, Ben Judd was also the original English voice of Phoenix Wright.
Day one backer here. With everything that happened with this game and what it delivered; if I had to do it all over again I would have backed it even more.
This is such.a great game and well worth the wait. It just shows that sometimes if you want a quality product you have to wait.
Oh lord, what a MASSIVE difference. They actually LISTENED to criticism and released the game to full positive response.
...
As I thought, the game DOES resemble order of ecclesia a lot.
It's a hybrid of Aria of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia.
As much as 505 pulled their weight in the back end, it wouldn’t have been possible to make those changes without them.
retrofraction
Everyone involved did their jobs pretty well.
OoE is my favourite in the series. The breaking up of a few zones and making it a bit linear was one of the negative points for me, but the combat, mechanics, fun factor were all top notch in OoE. It also had some of the most unique boss battles. The Boss on top of the lighthouse was tough, and you had to use your abilities in interesting ways. So i'm glad bloodstained took elements from it.
Nuce just got my backer copy and i loved OOE

I love how at 00:27 you made all the o's have crosses in them, a detail no one would really notice if they weren't playing close attention. I like how you payed that much attention to detail when maybe no one was going to even notice. This is one of the reasons I love this channel so much.
And what do you know, game seems to be fantastic from early reviews/playthroughs. That's a relief
I like it so far, though it did remind me how much I suck at that kind of game.
Also, there's a Shovel Knight enemy in this game.

“It was not by my hand that I'm once again given flesh. I was called here by humans who wish to play the ultimate IGA-vania...”
Trust me when I say: all the hype is real. This game is INSANE. Pure ‘vania PERFECTION. All hail Koji Igarashi! In my eyes, he is the game designer of the year - no, of the last 22 years (Symphony of the Night came out in 1997). Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night TRULY is the spiritual successor to Castlevania. This game represents everything that was incredible about Symphony of the Night - and far, far more. Metroidvania turned up to ELEVEN. The legend continues.
[flings wine glass aside] But enough talk. Bloodstained awaits... 🧛🏻♀️🦇😈
It ain't that good
it's good but it's got some problems, some being my own minor gripes like a lack of retrying bosses (having to walk back to the boss room might not sound like much but it adds up) to some frustrating moments in the game (spike traps in the underground water zone before you get deep sinker can go to hell) to other design choices i think the game would benefit from having or not having, and that's not even going into the bugs, like some reporting deleted save files, or in my case, not having the option to select hard anymore after changing game language
Oh look, it's an old pal' Hammer Kirby on the shelf!
This is my first time seeing your channel and this is a fantastic video! As a backer myself, I was worried during the production but ultimately happy with how Bloodstained released. Keep up the good work!
Happy with kickstarter exclusive content not being on disc? Backer names not credited? I'm assuming you were also one of the lucky ones to get your backer game already.
*Has Mighty No. 9 Flashbacks*
I've heard good things about Bloodstained, though.
Oh god
I speak as a backer........even thoe I didn't bitch I was worried.
Having got the finished game.....
It WAS F**KING WORTH IT ALL!
I'm still playing it.
A wondrous and brilliant continuation to every one of Koji Igarashi titles.
I Regret NOTHING!
The switch port is only an extra week after release. So it's not a big loss.
Plus, the Switch version is getting the DLC before the other consoles.
Switch sucks, so it wouldn't have been a loss at all if it was never released.
@@901aerol Ok good for you. We'll be over here not caring.
Yeah Derek made it sound like the “it was delayed” was for months but it’s just one week.
Metacritic has the game at 9.1-9.2 for User Scores, Steam version is sitting at a comfortable 94% positive rating (it actually peaked at 95%). Hopefully the game will sell enough copies that there could possibly be a sequel.
Even though there's similarities to mighty no9 I think how IGA went about making bloodstained mattered more! He focused on finishing what was in front of him and seemed to do it with a more genuine passion.
Note about "big kickstarters": there is a game called Hex Heros," featuring several indie heros and even Arin, Danny, and Ross from Game Grumps. This game was intended to launch on the wii u, then possibly the switch in 2017. Since then, absolutle silence.
Edit: Since my original post of this, they have made a update video for June and the developers will attempt to keep constant updates for every month. However, this is still doesn't excuse how long they remained silent on the project.
13:56 "Doom has 10 ports"
Yeah, multiple this by 10 and then we come closer to the real number
Probably mean official ports, not fan-made ones. that's likely in the thousands. Hell, I'm aware of fan-made ports for old color iPods.
You mean multiply?
It's like a rule 34 variant of sorts: if it exists, someone has probably ported Doom to it.
Dos, linux, mac, windows, snes, gba, ps1, saturn, jaguar, 32x, xbox, xbox360, ps3 and those are the official ports that I can think right now without google, 10 ports even by official ports standard is way too low
TI84, TI89, a smart fridge, probably available as homebrew on just about any console that's ever been hacked.
yeah more past mortem!
Dust Off The Relic thank you for watching them! We got more past mortem coming up!
Great video! I'm very very happy with the game itself. I think it'll be looked back upon fondly, once the initial teething issues are out the way (Like this 1.02 treasure chest glitch)!
Looks like it was less of a corporate shackle, and more of keeping a chicken from running around without a head.
No disapointment here, Ritual of the Night is Iga's best game, hands down. In my opinion of course.
IT'S SO GOOD.
I've been playing it every chance I get since release.
I'm with u on that
Haven't yet played Bloodstained, but have heard it blends elements from pretty much all of his Castlevania games. The shard system is ripped straight out of Aria of Sorrow, which is (as of now) my favorite Igarashi game. Can't wait to play Bloodstained!
@@RealBlueony The shard system is actually closer to Dawn of Sorrow with how they can get stronger from collecting multiples, but they can also be upgraded with materials found. Gear can be crafted from those materials as well similar to curse of darkness.... special attacks and familiars can be used ala Symphony of the night (And miriam even controls a lot like alucard complete with downward slashing again finally) yeah it's basically all the best elements of every game he's ever worked on in the castlevania series.
Alicia Fraser yeah, I see what you're saying. I didn't play much of Dawn, even though I loved Aria (weird, I know). But I see what you're saying, and I definitely agree about the fact that it takes the best elements from every game Igarashi worked on.
Is Igarashi the only ‘popular Japanese dev’ that managed to safely make a good game out of Kickstarter? Respect, man.
Yu Suzuki isn't done Shenmue 3, ya know.
Inafune isn't a developer.
@@ImJust1Joe even though he was a designer in Megaman X
@@GiordanDiodato Welp, it came out and Shenmue 3 bites hard.
So Iga is the grand winner of the Kickstarter conundrum.
as somebody who watched bloodstains Kickstarter all the way from beginning to end I admire what they were able to do and how involved they were an answering fan feedback and the best part of it all was the fan art submissions, seen those every single update made me smile and I'm not even really that big of a Castlevania fan
I have one thing to say about needing a company behind you. It's easy to say you want to do something and you can be as creative and have a team of highly-trained specialists but the reason you need a company could literally be at your back is to make you make the best game possible within a realistic time frame and budget which is something Kickstarter as you saying the video is a problem for because of stretch goals and unrealistic and unchecked expectations. So people can complain about how companies do this that and the other thing that ultimately harm its employees but at the same time you need that because unchecked ambitions leads to lawsuits and your own employees also possibly suing you.
Bloodstained : a prom night to remember
I need a Grace voiced episode! And I'm gonna comment until I get it! That being said. Good episode as always. I'm not a huge castlevania or megaman fan, but I do love how you just talk about what interests you. Keep it up
0:30 you forgot a hat in time lol
It's out now, it's on the level of Aria of Sorrow, which is basically the highest a Metroidvania can be and oh god, I didn't know how much I missed the flair and style that Iga puts in his games.
AoS? highest? LOL
2.5D's very useful for tweaking aspects of the game.
Adjusting animation, adding alternate cosmetics, et cetera, is somewhat simpler than having to redraw individual frames with pixel art. Especially the more detailed the pixel art.
Arc System Works with Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ uses the method for those, and stylistic reasons.
not to mention it's a lot cheaper compared to HD 2D sprites.
14:46 - "Vintage-vania"? Personally, I prefer the term; *_Classicvania._*
MagicMaster667 I’ve seen Classicvania used in many places but Derek is the only one I’ve seen who insists on using Vintagevania.
Kind of like how IGA and co. tried pushing Igavania instead of Metroidvania?
IGAvanias are Castlevania games developed by Igarashi and his team. Metroidvanias are the games inspired by/following up on Metroid and SotN, including IGAvanias.
CyberDragon10K Igavania is fine since it intends to only cover the Castlevanias made by Iga. Metroidvania is a much broader term that includes a whole bunch of games from other developers.
@@CyberDragon10K Crazy guess here, but I think "metroid" might be a trademark owned by a different company, in which case it would make sense to avoid using the word in a promotional trailer
Easy difference between MN9 and RotN. One is good the other is MN9.
That work on the lighting was worth it. Also, being as David Hayter VOICES the second playable character I feel like that was always gonna happen.
This video was fantastic, nice work guys.
I've been hearing good things about it so far.
also the possible reason why use 2.5D is because 2D sprites are WAY more expensive to make compared to 3D models nowadays.
High quality 2d sprites scale more in development the bigger the game is. There more enemies, angles, number of frames and details.
@@MDKcde granted it kinda depends. Hand drawn HD 2D sprites (or "smoothed out graphics"/ "Mobile game 2D" as nostalgia-filled retro gamers (I like calling those kind of people retrotards) call them) are far more expensive to make compared to 2D 8-bit/16-bit pixel-based sprites.
I would disagree about 2D being costly , costs are always relative to the project and what the engine is and their overall game design and technology used.
@@retrofraction perhaps, but imagine hand drawing 720-1080p 2D images.
@@GiordanDiodato Again its all relative. With tablets that is not going to be terrible and with vector art 8k is not untouchable.
Bloodstained's management was leaps and bounds better than Mighty No. 9's management. For starters: no Tina.
I remember the Kickstarter comments raking Angel-Corlux/Roberto over hot coals though. The team sounded like they had a lot of tricky political BS to navigate between retailers and the general release of the game.
also: NO DEEP SILVER
@@CyberDragon10K how can it be avoided. Even at my job the political PC bullshit is showing up at my job.
@@GiordanDiodato cannot be said hard enough
One of the things that should have been delayed was this video. It ended on a somber, downer note when a mere 24 hours after the video went live, cries of Hallelujah were raining down from the heavens. Seriously, if there was ever a time to bring back the Happy Nerd, if only for one video, this would be it.
...now if I can just figure out how in activate Cheat Codes without having to start a new game...
Bloodstained is like Symphony of the Night fused with Order of Ecclesia. I've been greatly enjoying it so far.
The point of his dream game is that it's our dream game :3 and I respect that and I don't care about all those stupid features as long as the game has a great story and nostalgia I'm gonna get mines from gog
What is a skeleton?
A miserable little pile of bones!
But enough talk! Have at you!
Cannot wait to get my copy!
I’d say that there were a lot of lessons to be learned from Mighty No.9, including how to avoid biting off more than you can chew. A lot of Kickstarter end up making big promises they really cannot keep, simply because the larger a game is the longer development takes and what sounds like a lot of money at the time is suddenly gone. Stretch goals are a good way to get more pledges, but you also become beholden to them in the eyes of you backers and there will take time to develop.
great video man, you gotta hand it to Iga, this man did not give up and brought his project back from the brink. I hope it performs well in the market.

@@sofija1996 There are actually many great kickstarter games. The video even shows a few of them at the bottom. The problem is that people remember the bad ones far more than the good ones, and the reputable devs who achieve success from crowdfunding don't need it again.
It's kind of the same story as early access. Shitty devs making it a crapshoot have damaged the public's trust even when some of the best games each year come out of it.
With Bloodstained becoming the most successful spiritual successor by a legacy dev, I'm hoping that Shenmue 3 despite the Epic Game Store controversy is the game that backers (like myself) are expecting it to be.
Great video, feels like yesterday that the first video for this came out. I didn’t back it then but after playing Curse of the Moon, I couldn’t wait for this...except I’m still waiting for my Switch version to ship 😢

Now that i'm 37 it take me up to a whole year to beat a game especially when you have responsibilities, taking care of my family, working and my job and on top of that my body doesnt allow me to sit in front of the tv for more than 3hrs. You'd be surprise how siting upright also drains you. Dont get old is my advice to you.
Lastly bloodstained is a masterpiece of a game it is huge and can be very hard the farther you get. The game also doesnt tell you where to go and i got lost a lot several times. The pacing is also weird how they dont give you "Invert" until almost at the end of the game which clearly is an item you need in the 1st half of the game. He did and basically wanted to give it a 10 out of 10. I don't think I've heard Jim Sterling be so giddy about a game.. ever

Iga is the real deal! He actually freakin did it!
Against all the odds and the legions of naysayers, IGA Made the best damn Metroidvania of the year! And that soundtrack!
Funny how all the drama and complaints -- some of which are totally fair -- really fade away when the game itself is actually good. This one could have gone either way, but that extra year of development really paid off. That's important not just for the success of this game, but for it to serve as the foundation for a series, which is I think what Iga wanted. Meanwhile, Inafune was planning an anime, multiple spin offs, and a breakfast cereal, but has now ended up with jack shit because he shipped a half baked game.
Great video!
Just beat the game on Nightmare mode. So much fun, but interesting to see how it came to be. Thanks for the video.
This is an Indie game, made with Unreal that refused Epic's Exclusivity deal?! I might have to buy this game out of respect.
To be fair, Bloodstained was far into development before the EGS was even created. Also, why burn up the remaining good will by stiffing both Steam and GoG?
@@SelecaoOfMidas One of the stretch goals for the Kickstarter was a GoG version.
@@SelecaoOfMidas The thing is though for the sake of covering their base with Epic capital has been the pitfall of many a publisher. The fact that 505 games and Koji Igarashi said no to that is still astounding to me. It makes sense to us to focus on goodwill with gamers but goodwill doesn't always equal sales. I'm not trying to discredit your perspective but I still think that the fact that this game wasn't snatched up by Epic is a miracle.
I mean if you guys are upset with the Shenmue 3 stuff, why not get the console version?
@@GiordanDiodato As well intended as that suggestion is, there are two problems with that logic. 1) If we had access to a console, we would've chosen the console version as our backer prize. Most of us chose the PC version assuming they'd have no problem giving us a Steam key and reimbursing us for helping fund their project. Those that chose the console backing prize are fine while those that chose PC are guilty and sentenced to buy the game again for not having the right platform for no seeming reason other than money. 2) We funded the project expecting to get the game as compensation to have to buy the game on another platform because of their business decision is rewarding them for breaching our agreement and again not all of us have access to or the funds to procure a console just for this game. There's a principal issue here of being promised something by developers only to be tricked by a third party publisher down the road due to a change in the business landscape. If we were a conglomerate with lawyers, we could probably go to litigation and get some variant of compensation but due to the amorphous contract and structure of kickstarting projects, we're left with little recourse but to vent our frustrations and to inform/warn others about getting involved with kickstarter or the offending developers and publisher.
Would have liked that vita port but i just transfered my order to switch, i also got the ps4 version and a newly repaired console so im good ether way!
"out the window like an anime fan on prom night." That's some gallows humor right there
Glad everything went smooth with this game, I love everything bloodstained
Just wanna say “Blood, Sweat and Pixels” Its a great book
Mighty No 9 helps ruin Kickstarter's rep.
Bloadstained brings it back up.
Shenmue looking to bring it back down.
I do hope that doesn't hurt Kickstarter's rep, the Shenmue thing isn't really their fault.
ALongLeggedPissedOffPuertoRican yeah, but that isn’t kickstarters’ fault would be unfair to blame them
@@PokeBattlerJaze It doesn't matter whether or not it's kickstarters fault. People will still perceive it as a bad platform when the people who use it abuse it.
I mean, if you're upset at the Epic store bs, why not just get the console version?
@ALongLeggedPissedOffPuertoRican Personally my only worry with Shenmue 3 is... well, Deep Silver.
Love this series!
Will check it out.
I've been playing "Ritual of the Night" on my Steam account, and I honestly love the hell out of it. It's like "Order of Ecclesia" on steroids in the best possible way. However, I will say that I find Miriam more likable as a protagonist compared to Shanoa, and I really like Shanoa!
Gotta love Miriam getting annoyed by Benjamin.
Heeey, I really liked Yooka-Laylee!
An amazing video as always, also where did you get that kickass what I assume is Kid Dracula shirt?
I think the definitive distinction here is that, when they came up short and overbudget, Comcept said "Well, it's better than nothing," and ArtPlay said "We need to bring in a heavy hitter and make this right." So that last delay when they decided to bring on WayForward made all the difference. And in the end, Bloodstained will be remembered as a good game, possibly the start of a good series, and Mighty No 9 will forever be a joke.
One of your Patrons is named Alan Ricks, which is an alias I would sign things with when I didn't wan't my real name on something. Basically, he is my Rusty Shackleford.
Just thought it was interesting.
Pocket sand! Sha-sha!
Switch version why are you so close to SMM2? I don't have that much mooooney lol.
Sell your kidneys
I finally finished the main campaign last night, and I gotta say, this game went above and beyond. If anything, it's so overloaded with content and things to do that you almost can't wrap your head around it at first. First half of your first playthrough is just discovery, seeing what Easter eggs they included for long-time "Castlevania" fans, messing around with weird shit you can do like playing the piano or changing your haircut.
But then we get to the final boss, and I gotta say, it's one of the best IGA has ever made. Frenetic, challenging, yeah potions and fairie elixir help, but this is all down to your skill. It made for such a rewarding experience.
Finally I can die knowing the legend of S.O.T.N. will live on forever. Amazing music again. Great job.
