  • I did not want to spend over $70 on a battery replacement for a Power Wheels battery. I found this battery on Amazon for $25 and it is rated 12 volts at 12ah vs. the original 12v at only 9.5ah. This battery will last much longer between charges.

    Great guide thank you. New battery works great. Got a mighty max 12v 22ah. About $60 shipped. There's room enough for two inside of a power wheels ford raptor. So can run in paralell or series if one wanted.

      Smart thing to do is to put an inline fuse as well too on the positive wire. protects the battery and the wiring from the car. The original Power Wheels battery has the fuse built in. Just a nice little thing to know. :)

      @@colinthompson1804 Yes you could definitely do that if you wish. The risk of damage is next to nothing from such a small charger so I took the risk. Lol. It has been years now and no issue.

      I tried that but I wasn't pleased. Those powertool batteries work great, for about 10 minutes. They are designed to work in quick bursts, not for the duration. I found this wheelchair battery to be superior. It runs as fast as the power wheels battery but lasts WAY longer. 25% longer actually.

    You need to put a fuse in there so you don’t burn it up.
    You don’t need to solder it

    • @dinstaar
      @dinstaar  4 роки тому

      I soldered it because by nature this jeep is subject to vibration and going over bumps. It may be overkill but by soldering the connections it insures a connection that is unlikely to come loose over time. A fuse wouldn't hurt anything but the voltage is regulated by the charger already and theoretically should be fine. You can tell by my soldering though they I think a little bit of overkill can go a long way.
      Thanks for watching.

      You do need to solder it due to vibration or should be crimped in there with lots of force.

    Did the original charger actually work with the upgraded 12ah battery or did you end up having to use a float or trickel charger? Also, what amperage fuse did you use?

    • @dinstaar
      @dinstaar  4 роки тому +1

      The original charger works great! I did not use an inline fuse at all. I don't see the point. I can't imagine any real damage occuring to the power wheels. It is a pretty simple machine. Some guys go with an 18 volt with no issues. It has been used extensively since the upgrade with no issues. If I was using lights or a radio I would suggest fusing it.

      On the original battery it has a relay, you don't need a relay switch either ?

    • @dinstaar
      @dinstaar  4 роки тому

      @@yetsinga No you do not need a relay. I have an electrical background, I used to work on generators and frequency converters in the military. I can tell you with absolute certainty that the powerwheels charging system is over-engineered. It is a simple battery powering a simple electric motor. If you do it like I did you'll be fine. My girl's runs great!

    • @dinstaar
      @dinstaar  4 роки тому +1

      @@yetsinga No relay is needed. The Powerwheels battery is overcomplicated and inferior to the wheelchair battery. As someone with an electrical background I can assure you that a relay on the battery is not necessary (I worked on generators, frequency converters, and other powered ground equipment in the military). Think of your phone charger, no relay, just the "fat plug-in the wall". Think of a float charger for your car, same fat plug in.
      Powerwheels is a pretty simplistic design. It is just a 12v battery, an electric motor, and 4 wheels. Don't overthink it. My daughter's powerwheels has been performing great since this replacement with no issues.
