- You might not have expected me to share a running and operating garden tractor...but this deal was too good to pass on!
This is a John Deere 332 diesel and arguably one of the most complete and ultimate garden tractors out there! They manufactured this tractor between 1987 and 1992 in Horicon, Wisconsin (USA). This was a decent upgrade from the one-year-only John Deere 330 diesel tractor. This tractor was more similar to the John Deere 318, but it did receive a wonderful 16HP Yanmar diesel engine under the hood.
Some may say this is NOT the ultimate garden tractor because you haven't seen all the features this unit has!

When we bought my wife's departed grandfathers house we got his 332 that has been mowing the same 1.5 acres for about 35 years. It's insane how well made that Yanmar engine is.
I have a 1986 330, same yanmar engine as 332, passed down from my father in-law, hour meter stopped at just over 5800hrs 3 years ago and still runs great, these engines are bullet proof👍👍👍
That's AMAZING! I haven't seen or heard of a 300 series with that many hours on the clock! You should fix the hour meter, so you can really determine how many hours you'll have on it once it get tired and stops completely.

I can attest to this being the best Garden Tractor money can buy. The cost range is about $1,500 - $5,000 USD This makes it a perfect first Garden tractor! I've had one for 16 years now and it works perfectly fine, It's the dedicated lawn mower and snow pusher and works perfectly for those. For 8 of those 16 years, it was used as a real Garden tractor planting sweet corn and was perfect for that. It also plowed the soil, Roto Tilled the soil, and disced it too Worked perfectly every time.
Hi Andrew! I would say this garden tractor is one of the best models out there and it can easily compare to some of the newest ones on the market. Around central Alberta you'll find the same prices, just in CAD $ and that is still a pretty decent price for what you're getting!
I've been hearing many stories of John Deere 332's and how many enthusiasts have had them for over a decade, if not from new. You have had your JD332 for a very long time and I can imagine it has already paid off within the first couple months/years😃
I only have a 46" mower deck for this unit, but I hope to find attachments that will fit this tractor specifically. It is a little bit newer than the JD300 and JD317 I have and I can see myself making this my go-to tractor. We'll see what I have to repair before I really start to use it properly.

my first JD was a 318,still own it-it's sat in the weeds for a tick.Picked up a 332 for 1200 bucks ten years ago and it's been a beast cutting my grass.The local Massey dealer got a trade-in 430 last year it's been a good machine for me so far as well

It would be really fun to restore a JD430…but I haven‘t been able to track one down yet. Fingers crossed I find one in the future:)

@@WorkshopRebuild Just turned 1100 hrs. It's been flawless. I would say that compared to a regular gasoline, air cooled garden tractor, there is definitely more maintenance required but if properly maintained they will last a lifetime. I did put a relay kit on the charging system. They were notorious for overcharging, but it's an easy, cheap fix.

I just saw your video Thomas and I'm impressed with how well your custom setup works. Great work!! In tractor terms, 1100 hours is very low and I hope it will last you many more years with a little bit of maintenance.
That is correct. Most liquid cooled engines require more maintenance, because there are more seals and gaskets that can dry up over time. For air-cooled engine you really only rely on two crankshaft seals to seal off your engine and hopefully your head gaskets hold up over the test of time.
I'm planning to go through the JD 332 here in the next couple of days, so we'll see what flaws I find under the covers. Thanks for your comment!

Sweet machine! One thing I will point out is the rectangle bracket mounted offset on the hitch is actually for a bagger.
Thank you very much Jacob! I did not know this was mainly for a bagger attachment, but I have learnt something new today! It does look like this John Deere 332 had quite a few attachments on it in the past, because there are marks on the frame. I did notice the mower deck has a pulley on the most outer spindle on top of the mower deck guards. This is probably an indicator for a bagger, but you might know that better than I do. Those JD 3xx tractors have a cult following. I own two of the 318 series.
I agree with you on that! You have very good tractors in your hand and they are very capable of many tasks. Are you satisfied with the Onan engines?
My 1986 332 is still running excellently after 37 years. I can’t afford mechanics so a lot is jerry-rigged. I grow more respectful and fond of it ever year. I wish I could find a mechanic I could afford whose quality is good.
Hi there! That's awesome news and I am aware that these John deere 332 garden tractors are some of the best out there, if not the best! You know, if it runs and operates, then you got yourself a good tractor. Not everything has to look good at the end of the day, it just has to get the job done.
If you have patience and enough time, you can learn a lot online and keep your tractor around for a very long time.

Wow! Gorgeous machine! I expected to see a long hood, interesting how they put the engine in backwards. I have to say it is nearly mint condition. Are the brackets on the foot pans for a cab? She sure purrs like a kitten, good find! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks a lot! I should actually measure the hood to see if it's any longer than my John Deere 317, but I doubt it. They somehow managed to stuff this engine in there and it works! I agree with you, this tractor is in overall great condition and I haven't seen any major issues. This might look different when I start to remove some panels to get some service-work done.
The metal around the side steps of the fender were most likely for a cab and some of the other brackets! It looks like there was a 3 point hitch and some attachments up front in the past, because there are some visible marks on the frame. I'd love to find more attachments, but it's not really that easy around here! Everyone sells tractors as package-deals, but I'll do my best to add some attachments in the future.

@@WorkshopRebuild I initially thought it was air cooled. My dash panel on the 430 has another icon in the top right with a thermometer and H2O indicating water temp. After you opened the hood and I saw the battery up front and the radiator by the column I was surprised. I bought a 3 point kit from ebay, haven't got around to installing it but it appears to be decent quality. It is aftermarket but I'm ok with that since it's just steel bars and chains. The throttle response is incredible so other than some cleaning I can't imagine you'll find too much to look after. My tractors have black tubes for the sight level except a small glass tube between the tabs for level checking. Might not have to replace the whole tube if you can score a little tube. Bit of advice you're probably aware of is to never ever use starting fluid! Let the glow plugs do their thing and use a battery charger if the battery is weak. Starting fluid will pop a hole I the top of the middle piston. My 420 has the second pto switch but the 430 does not. Both tractors have a pto shaft out of the rear. Curious to see what you come up with for attachments too. I have several but like you said, they all came with the tractor. If you can come across a model 44 loader, I bet it fits. Looks like the frame is the same as the 318 and they did make a frame for the 318. That loader frame fits the 318 and the 420 so I'm sure it fits your 332. The front hydro lines work awesome for my plow blade. The dual control allows for up and down as well as windrow side to side. That snowblower you rebuilt would work on there too I think... ya she's heavy but I've got wheel weights, suit case weights and chains on the rear. Let's just say she is a little tank! Do you know the horse power? The 430 is 20 I believe, more than enough to break the frame in half. Just a heads up, in the video you mention a link to the power steering video, the link didn't pop up. I'll search for it as I indeed need to take a look see and fix on that. I just had a look at the JD 430 dash panel and it does have one more icon! I learned something new today! This engine is really stuffed in there and it's amazing how they managed to do that.
I believe I might do the same, purchase a 3-point hitch online and be done. It might take me weeks to find one around here and then I'd still have to work on it...The throttle response is great and I think the engine is tuned very well. I will check to make sure that all the seals are holding oil, so that's something I can do and I think the forward and reverse levers will need some adjustment. It's a bit sticky and maybe I'll make the reverse go a bit faster.
I am aware of the damage starting fluid has on engines! I have never used it myself because I do not believe in it. A gasoline engine only needs fuel/air/spark and a diesel needs fuel/air/high compression to run. With that said, I think these two fuels (gasoline and diesel) work just fine to start an engine haha!
I got a 46" mower deck with this JD 332, but I took it off right away because it needs to be gone through! I haven't shared a mower deck rebuild video yet, so that might be something I'll do for an upcoming video. I do have a rear mount rototiller from my JD 317, but I'm not sure if that fits this tractor just yet.
Mounting a 44 loader onto this garden tractor would be neat, but I already have the JD855 with loader capabilities. I think that would be a little bit overkill and the 44 loader isn't the cheapest attachment out there either. I have seen a 47" 2-stage snowblower hooked up to this JD332 before, but that's a push. I would prefer a single-stage snowblower for this unit as it would be more nimble and easier to maneuver.
An angle plow like yours works wonders, especially with hydraulic cylinders. I bet you enjoy that attachment a lot!
According to sources online, this John Deere 332 has a maximum power output of 16HP. To me, that is enough because it is diesel. I noticed even with the 317 (17HP gasoline) the tractor doesn't miss a beat while mower tall grass or tilling the ground!

Great video! Another great find. You will really enjoy that machine. That is my next one, upgrading from my 317. I have one 318 and the Onan is ok. I really don't like working on it as much as I did with my 317. It has a unique sound, but I my opinion the KT17 sounds better! What are your plans for this one? Regards-Jason
Thank you so much Jason! I can already enjoy it right from the start, unlike some of the previous machines I purchased. I would highly recommend a John Deere 332 to you! It's a major upgrade from the 317 and another upgrade from the 318. The 317 has a brilliant sound and it is different from the 318 (Onan). I think Kohler designed their engines a little bit better, but that just comes down to the engine block itself...everything else is basically the same.
My plans for this one is to give it a full-service touch up some of the smaller details I need to address like seals, belts, pto bearing noise etc. I will share every step of the way and once the tractor is all cleaned up, I will try and find as many attachments as I can and I'd love to make this my main tractor!

Coming from a diesel mechanic you only need to bleed the injectors cause that’s the highest point of the fuel system. Your not gonna get to far bleeding the injector pump cause that’s were the pressure for the injectors are created

I really like the 332 and the 322 of that series. Do you just do the older early 300 and 400 series? I'm a big fan of the late 300 and 400 series like the 345 and 445 mainly because of the foot control hydro. The plastic hoods of that era is the biggest gripe I have.
Hi javman, Thanks for tuning in and letting me know that you're interested in the Yanmar powered JD 300 series garden tractors! Previously I worked on three JD 300 series tractors and one JD 400 series. I didn't really have a preference before I fixed these tractors, I just found good deals and I was willing to work on something new and different.
I would love to find a newer 300 or 400 series garden tractor, but they don't really come up for sale or at least not in a the condition where I could really work on them. Maybe they are just too good and everyone that has one, is holding onto it! To be honest I was bidding on a JD 455 at an auction about a year ago...but it sold for too much in my opinion with a non-running engine.
I hope I'll be able to upgrade my fleet as time passes, but I'm happy with what I have. Regards Andreas

I would highly suggest you get one! This thing is a beast and it's hard to compare the JD 332 to any other 300 series garden tractor. There are still many out there and maybe you'll get lucky if you find one out on a field somewhere. Cheers

It's interesting you say that! Here it's somehow the other way around in central Alberta. There are many JD 300-317's, but anything above is hardly for sale. If you find a deal it's always better...you can spend a little bit more time fixing things, but you know what you have at the end of the day.
That's awesome! The shaft driven tillers perform very well and it's nice to know that the model 48 tiller is similar t the model 35! Once you have your driveshaft sorted out you'll have an awesome attachment. How do you like your 420?

There was a model 330 diesel as well. single spool hydraulics, and no power steering IIRC. They were either 18 or 20 HP rated. More of the diesels and 322 (gas liguid cooled) models sold up north so guys could blow or push snow in a nice heated cab.
That is correct! In total, there are 4 JD garden tractors here. Some might think this is too much haha. It really is a work of art! I will be removing some of the panels to give this John Deere 332 a good clean, so you might be interested to see more in an upcoming video. According to sources online this tractor has around 16HP! Enough for this little tractor
That is correct, the John Deere 330 was produced in 1986 and didn't have as many features as the 332. The 332 started in 1987 and was produced all the way until 1992 and throughout this run they upgraded the hydraulics and power steering as you mentioned. This tractor should have "only" 16HP, but to me that's enough for this little tractor anyways. Once you bump up the HP, other components need to be capable for that rating. That's another reason why John Deere decided to build the 430 on a larger frame with more features.
I didn't know that! I bet a cab for one of these tractor in winter would be just amazing. It would be reeally cool to find one in good condition.

May I ask what you paid for that tractor? I have a chance to buy one listed at $2500.
This price is pretty solid for a 332. expect to pay more for a low-hour machine in great condition and with multiple attachments.
The tractor you see here was a shade less than what you‘ll be paying, but it only came with a 46“ mower deck.
More attachments = more value.

14:43 There is no "might" about it. Running an engine without an appropriate amount of oil for any amount of time will be damaging your engine.
The best tractors were the 1967 Craftsman suburban no doubt
I've heard many good things about the Craftsman suburban tractors, but never been on one myself! The JD 332 is 20years newer and it would be very hard to compare. I believe a more acceptable comparison would be any tractor from the 60's, but then again, I just don't know enough about them. Maybe I'll be able to find a couple tractors from back in the day and compare them on this channel.
What did you like about the Craftsman suburban specifically?

Rear Tires: 0.384"
What is now closer to half an inch? The front tires or the rear tires?
430 is better
It’s hard to compare a JD 430 to a JD 332 because of the weight difference, size difference and the functionalities each has to offer.
I did a comparison video between the JD 400 and Bolens HT20. These tractors are much more similar to a JD 430 and maybe you‘ll notice that for yourself:

@@WorkshopRebuild I do have one In Real Life. It’s not a John Deere, it’s a 1976 Case 222 Hydraulic Drive that I found in a field.
I have a 318 and 332. Hands down the 332 all day long. I have a bucket. Let me tell you. If you plan on doing work around your property, the loader is the cats meow. The 54" plow and blower are a close second for usability. But TRUST me, get a loader. Got the Bulford bucket on mine. The three point has been invaluable. Get a Ruegg. Amazing the implements it will take.
Thanks for sharing your opinion here in the comment section! I believe the JD 318 is a very popular and highly regarded machine, because of all the features it has. The JD 332 on the other hand is basically the same just with a liquid cooled diesel engine, that probably everyone loves.
I appreciate your suggestion about getting a loader and that's something I'm looking into! In my area there haven't been many attachments for these machines lately, but I will keep my eyes open. I'd love to find as many attachments as possible to make this my go-to machine, for chores around the property. Winters hit hard here in central Alberta and thankfully I'm equipped with a snowblower on my JD 855. You mentioned you have a snowblower for your 3XX Series garden tractors. Do you have the single stage blower or 2-stage blower?
I really want complete the 3 point hitch assembly in the back and I will most likely lean towards the Ruegg hitch system.
