    We were lucky enough to buy a 0.9 acre property with about 30 trees on it, all old growth trees 60+ years old, one gigantic oak tree and a huge italian stone pine. We had solar installed, we could generate more solar than we need with the panels if we removed the stone pine, but it's an *amazing* tree, so we are keeping it around. The shade it provides for the house reduces our reliance on AC too, solar for electricity isn't the only way to reduce costs, sun blocking trees help a huge amount.

    • @need100k
      @need100k 16 днів тому

      Good that you realize the fact that the shade reduces energy needs, negating the need for more sunlight to make more power. Just be aware that stone pines can get quite heavy and sometimes fail, even large limbs so be sure it's properly maintained and be careful what you keep around it. In fact, I found an old video from Blair Glenn on this channel where he talks about stone pines. Worth watching: ua-cam.com/video/KpVhq_qaK04/v-deo.html

    I had a Douglas fir growing at the corner of my property within three feet of a utility pole and within 10 feet of a cedar tree. I knew it was in a bad location and it was just a matter of time before some utility company came and topped it because it was encroaching on the transformer box on the pole. I probably should have taken it out sooner myself, but it was too big for me to cut by hand and I had a plan for when the utility company came by. I asked them to top the tree and I cut all of the limbs below that off, but left the trunk standing to create habitat for woodpeckers and other things. About a year or two later, sure enough, I spotted a hole drilled into the trunk where a flicker or woodpecker had taken up residence. I felt bad for killing the tree, but I knew it couldn’t be left and any cutting it was just going to create more problems as long as the tree tried to survive. I felt I made the best of bad situation by providing a home for some birds and insects at the very least.

    My city has a tree ordinance that protects native trees. If the homeowner wants to remove a tree that is covered by the ordinance, you need to get a permit and an arborist report that covers the justification for removal. Tree management is essential to maintenance of the city's semi-rural character. Healthy trees reduce
    air and noise pollution, provide energy-saving shade and cooling, furnish habitat for wildlife, enhance
    aesthetics and property values, and help to maintain soil stability. Proper tree management can both
    create and protect privacy and views as well as reduce fire hazards. Personally, I think all of this is a good thing.

    Trees are part of us. The problem with humans is that we think we are 'special'....and everything else, plants and creatures are secondary, unimportant and irrelevant. Everything in the universe are all part of the same system of the universe....and one would struggle to survive without the other. It is from each other that everything has evolved. But we have come to a point where we don't care...or don't consider. We lack awareness and hence become very foolishly selfish. And if we don't stop and think, things could turn against us and the system could shake us off.....like a dog shaking itself after a bath. Trees are a vital part of the system.

    You're there to tell them what is best for the tree's outcome. It pisses me off that people make decisions for dumb reasons. The previous owner of my property had all the pines removed from the 8 acres because they were too dirty. I told her that pine straw is over $100 a bale! For that dirty stuff. I had great delight in telling her I've planted over 200 pines back on the property. Some are now about seven feet tall. We are custodians of this World, it's our duty to take care of it to the best of our ability.

    Thanks, I am part of More Trees Arborist Collective, we have been discussing topping recently. Our focus as a company has been planting, pruning, preservation with wise planning to guide our actions. Removing is rare and large removal we refer to others if necessary. During our discussions we came the reality that though we prefer no topping we on occasion do top as part of risk mitigation to reduce risk of structurally at risk trees and storm damaged from primarily snow and ice events. The option of topping is offered as opposed to removal and with the plan of regular maintenance care in some situations it is used to delay removal till a neighboring tree reaches a point to act as a replacement. I hope we agree there may be times where it is better to top (where a proper crown reduction is not sufficient to reduce structural risk) though this is rare it is done as part of a longer-term plan to preserve canopy and other environmental services. Topping and appropriate maintenance in most cases in the long term costs more than removal. To give trees greater long-term consistency of care I am encouraged when cities and other large properties have a plan they work from, Land Banks may be a place for similar long term planning, care and value to trees over many home owners that may own the house on the property. Thanks again for your regular sharing of perspective .

    One thing in regards to power companies topping/hacking trees, that's their full time job. Those topped trees will need continual maintenance for the rest of their lives, and the power company will be doing it. If a homeowner uses the power company's practices as justification for topping their own trees, they should be informed that they'll need to have a crew coming back to do the same kind of maintenance for the rest of the tree's life.

    I try my best to share what wisdom and knowledge I have about my clients trees. That being said each tree and client is different and it can be a challenge to do what's best for the tree (which is my top priority) but also satisfy the client. As an arborist we ultimately make the decision to make a cut or not. Sometimes clients think they know what they want and sometimes they demand they know what's best and neither are true in most situations. Not everyone liked his politics but it was politics back then, compromises were who government worked there was none of this stupid not voting for something that was good for the country just because someone from the other side of the isle. I have not see a compromise in decades now. It's all personalities and hate the other party. This IS NOT the America I grew up in. Parties steeling supreme court seats just because they can. That would never have happened 50 years ago just morally wrong to do, nobody in ether party would put up with partisan crap like that back then because if you pull some stunt like that it requires retribution and we were not about that we were about democracy. What are we now? I don't know, I'm stumped as well as totally disappointed that the voters let them get away with acting like they were in the sandbox in kindergarten. To make matters worse I still can't convince the neighbor from sticking the hose at the base of the tree putting the water the one place the tree does not want it. Rain drips off the tree where the water needs to be, why do you stay dry if you stand under a tree and lean on the trunk in a rain storm? Think about that, the tree knows where it's root system that needs the water is. Lots of ignorance around these days, much of it gratuitous ignorance, people choosing to be ignorant.

I was hoping getting rid of all the very old white men many of who were outright bigots and worse but I'm not impressed with the younger bunch. Just more blindly doing everything but efficiently running the country. Perhaps it's just my point of view being born right at the start of WWII things just don't seem like America I sometimes feel like there was a coup by I don't know who but democracy seems at best stuck in a rut and at worse I don't even want to think about it. Just not my America. Seems sometimes the government sure is not working for the people who hired them.
      They could have perhaps skipped a couple of dumb wars and done something with that money that was a benefit to the people. Every civilized country except the US has health care for their people. Nobody should go bankrupt from getting sick that's just stupid if not outright immoral. Again, healthcare is a big business, too much money to be made by the rich guys on something that should be universal but not everyone looks at it that way. I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. His statement is lacks education & experience. These days bad practices are common knowledge ,even for those not formally trained, or at least they should be. As far as "doing what a client wants" well they're not the professional. What they want & whats right are often two very different scenario's. Before a "tree worker" does anything they must make a hazard & tree assessments. Those assessments dictate approach & what can or can't be done. Then its up to us to inform / educate. There is obviously instances where "topping" a tree maybe a short term management strategy possibly for public safety in the 'short term' and pollarding maybe an example. But clients should be informed that this practice is bad for a tree causing more long term issues and that the tree will likely require management forever. An example of it in Melbourne is 100s of miles of pollarded Platanus growing under powerlines. Granted they make a great avenue & cope well with pollarding but never the ending annual management costs must be in the millions I'd imagine. Maybe its better to remove a tree and replace it with a more suitable species rather than topping. Maybe bracing can be utilized if the tree is of a safety concern but you'd only know these things though formal training & experience. The industry is unregulated in Australia meaning almost anyone with little knowledge can operate. Its a real problem & insult to those who've put much time, effort, capital in becoming a tree care professional.

    I like you so much when you just stay out of politics. You seem overly emotional with politics. Both Trump and Biden have been in charge, they got very little done because Congress is where things get done. The youth are in a growth process just as anything else is, the Presidents have influenced their lives very little, far less than say Charli XCX has! You need to relax. Politics is over. Ask any "youth" if we are going to vote our way out of this mess! Listen to what they tell you.

    Tell us you are for Brandon without saying you are for Brandon. Let's go Brandon. You are only a few years younger so don't say anything. @California
