- Tim Burton joined us to reveal the 5 seminal films that have influenced his career.
Here he talks about The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974) and how Ray Harryhausen was a true insipration to him in the way he brought inanimate objects to life on screen.

I think Harryhausen likely stopped after Clash of the Titans because he could see the cinematic landscape changing. He'd laid the groundwork for special effects for the next half century, almost, and he lived to see himself become a legend. If you know his work, you know each film he tried to better himself and what he'd accomplished again and again, and I have to imagine he just realised he'd done most, if not all he could possibly do with his particular talents.
Things were moving on, and I suspect he knew that, so he chose to step away. By the 80s you had Star Wars, Star Trek, Lucas and Spielberg and Scott and Cameron all in or getting into the game. People who'd grown up watching his films, inspired by his work, and taking things to the next step.
Honestly, I respect that, on top of everything else. To know when to step away, and go out at the top of your game.

Stop-motion blows CGI away ! The laughable obviousness doesn't diminish the viscereal impact it leaves on the senses

Absolutely. The enchanting and wondrous quality of stop- motion animation cannot even be remotely achieved by c.g.i. unless the c.g.i. purposely tries to imitate stop motion - we saw this in 'Mars Attacks' and '9'. I enjoyed both of those c.g.i. projects because Burton successfully recreated the look and feel of stop-motion animation.

His bodylanguage says that he didn`t like working with Stop-motion.
I like Stop-motion more than CGI, because there is a feeling of fantasy and reality mixed together.
You are not the only one. Stop motion gives its own unearthly feel. The creatures move in a creepy inhuman way. When I watch as a kid I did not want to pretend to be Sinbad or Jason and face those things.😅
I would like to see riddley walker, by russell hoben be made into movie, thats a great sci fi, and post apocalyptic, in one. Read it its great
