The real highlight of Iloilo city downtown aside from the century-old buildings, is how clean the surroundings are. It is very rare to see a very clean city downtown sidewalks from other parts of the Philippines. I'm so glad that you explored our downtown yourself. I guarantee you, that you have still missed some attractions in our downtown. Incuding: Plaza Libertad, where you can find many old structures surround it. It is where our City Hall situated too. I remember the glory days of Cinema theater(now Unitop) further down the street with all its neon lights blazing and that fountain still working (now that obelisk). That was in the late 70s. Definitely our humble version of New York's Times Square. That SM is the first SM in Iloilo City.

Royal Street - Calle Real in Spanish, pronounced "Calye Reyal." Before all the new shopping centers and malls, this area was the place to go shopping. This was the main thoroughfare of the city starting from the Spanish days.
The high ceilings really helped a lot to alleviate heat when air conditioners weren't invented yet.
A lot of the buildings along Calle Real were built during the American era in the early 1920s. The buildings that preceded them were mostly large residentials houses with commercial stores on the 1st floor and residential on the 2nd/3rd floors.
Many of the buildings from the Spanish era & American era (Art Deco style) did not survive the 1966 Iloilo Fire that burned down 3/4 of the city proper and burned the north end of Calle Real. This is why you is a mismatch of the surviving 1920s art deco and more recent 1960s style buildings along Calle Real

First Department Store in the Philippines.
HISTORY 101 by N. Lujan. Hoskyn and Company opened the first department store in the Philippines in 1877 at the corner of Calle Real (now JM Basa Street) and Calle Santo Niño (now Guanco Street) in downtown Iloilo City.
Dubbed “the store that sells everything from needle to anchor”, it was started by Henry Hoskyn, a former employee of the firm Smith, Bell and Company based in Manila and nephew of Nicholas Loney, British vice consul in Iloilo.
Hoskyn then partnered with George Medhurst Saul, a wealthy Irishman who owned a lot of properties in Iloilo City, and who was married to a Spanish woman, Damiana Robles y Figuerroa.
Hoskyn's Department Store was the first to introduce the “fixed price” policy in merchandising in the country, offering groceries, hardware, stationery, toys, watches, jewelry, machinery, buttons, and threads, among others.
It was described as "a great store" and "the best in the islands" by Enid Rolanda Dauncey, wife of Iloilo-based British businessman Campbell Dauncey, in her 1906 memoirs “An Englishwoman in the Philippines”.
Dauncey recounted how she bought "pieces of furniture, some groceries, china, glass, and so forth" from Hoskyn's "at low prices, as they have such an immense business , even being able to compete with the shops in Manila..."
Hoskyn and Company officers included Henry Hoskyn, J. C. Hoskyn, Herbert Peter Hoskyn, George Medhurst Saul, A. Ponce de Leon, E. Garcia, and Gregorio Manuel Loring Sr., according to The Directory and Chronicle (1894, page 483).
Loring was the son of Wright Boott Loring of Boston, the first American vice consul in Iloilo. The name "Galerias de Comercio Loring" is now found at the entrance of Hoskyn's Compound.
By 1912, Ponce de Leon and Garcia were replaced by Saul's son Walter. "Walter Saul seems to be the moving spirit of Hoskyn's now," noted the November 1938 issue of The American Chamber of Commerce Journal (Vol. XVIII, No. 11; page 6).
The elder Saul was mentioned in Dean Conant Worcester's book "The Philippine Islands and Their People" as the one who befriended him and his companions when they got stranded in Iloilo in 1891, and offered them a house in Guimaras.
The same issue of The American Chamber of Commerce Journal reported that Hoskyn and Company was incorporated in 1925.
"It has long been a commercial landmark in the Bisayas, people call on it for everything and always get what they want," the ACC Journal noted.

It's interesting that Canadians visit my hometown whilst I'm here in Quebec recovering from Covid.🤭 Hope you guys had a wonderful time and thanks for visiting made me miss the place. Don't mind people staring, we're not used to foreigners on a daily basis, unlike Metro Manila and Cebu. Iloilo City pretty laid back and peaceful place, friendly and shy people.😉

A lot has changed. The Regent Arcade is used to be a movie house, the first movie house I went to, and I was 10 years old. The building with an eagle is/was a bank now Jollibee. The park used to be "The Freedom Grandstand", they took out the stage. I used to climb trees behind to watch concerts, celebrities and political campaigns. Behind the post office is where the old train station and old train tracks. The last time I was there, Iloilo was already cleaning up the city taking away signs of train tracks and shacks/shanties.

Awesome! That's very near my workplace although we're on a hybrid setup now so I mainly work from home but I used to roam around those places quite a lot. They're my favorite go-to areas whenever I need something because there are plenty of options to choose from at very cheap prices
