Everyone is absolutely misunderstanding what Edmunds is saying. Read what they are saying here carefully:
"More than half of Teslas traded in at dealerships so far in 2024 were traded in for a gas vehicle." Note that Tesla doesn't have dealerships or gas cars to trade.
So here is what that means. A survey done by Bloomberg in the US recently: "Tesla still maintains an 87% brand retention rate, outperforming two non-electric automakers at 67% with Lexus and 54% at Toyota. 81% of prospective Tesla buyers are new customers switching from competing EV brands compared to 42% of Nissan’s prospective buyers."
Not a small detail that people are misunderstanding here. Teslas traded in at legacy dealerships are a small percentage of overall Teslas being traded in. So the 13% of non-loyal Tesla customers traded in at legacy dealerships and are trading in for legacy dealership gas cars with the other half being traded in for legacy dealership EVs. This is a smaller subset of used Teslas being traded in. The other 87% is being traded in for new Teslas. So if Tesla has a 87% loyalty rate for returning customers that means that the other 13% are being traded in at legacy dealerships half of which are traded in for legacy EVs. That means only around 7.5% of used Teslas are traded in for ICEs.
So Edmunds needs to correct this and change their headline to: Out of the 13% of Teslas that aren't traded back into Tesla for a new Tesla, 50% of those are traded in for a gas car. But that wouldn't create as much hysteria and get as many clicks.

I recalled the fact Tesla had the highest brand retention rate and rather than googling what it was, sought to see if some commenter had done the work and concluded what I was thinking, that this story was about a very small percentage of Teslas. Bingo. The real news is that, of all the vehicles that are available to trade in FOR at a conventional dealership, ICE share is down to half! At least among people who had previously seen the light and then gone astray...

Thanks for that. EV should have explained it.
The really interesting question then is what/why are they swapping back to ICE.
If I was Tesla that would be such an important bit of knowledge.
EVs are not yet right for all scenarios and in a way you don't really want to be targeting those for whom it is right and for others to say not yet guys but your time will come.
      That also builds trust.

  • @MarksElectricLife
    @MarksElectricLife 2 місяці тому +313

That statistic is meaningless unless you know the proportion of total population traded. If 5% of Tesla owners trade with a dealer and 50% choose ICE then 2.5% of Tesla owners are reverting to ICE. Not that high really? Bear in mind you would not be at a dealership if you were swapping to another Tesla (as most do). My guess is those people had financial difficulties and needed to lower their repayments by swapping to a cheap ICE car. 🤔

I was thinking along that line. It is a sampling issue, as this stat is likely not including trade-in to Tesla as that would mean they get another Tesla. So basically they are all have to be at Dealerships with ICE available. This really means 50% ended up getting another BEV and probably from another brand, or a used Tesla, which is quite high! But that is ok, as the rest of Tesla owners are likely getting another Tesla via Tesla directly or simply private sold Tesla be for getting another new or used one.

@@orionbetelgeuse1937 That is completely bogus, the "emissions" from tire wear are large particle emissions that do not stay in the atmosphere, and are not likely to cause near the health problems that burning fuel does. That study is only about particulate pollution is not comparing gaseous pollution. Yes, burning fuel does not produce large amounts of particulates, but it creates much more gaseous byproducts. The "conclusions" of that have been completely debunked.
Now if you are making an environmental argument, i.e. that those large particles are causing more damage to the environment than the gaseous emissions are, that would be a very complicated study, who knows how it would come out. My guess is small town renters who do not have access to charging. My duplex does not have large enough electrical service to add a charger even if I would pay for one installed. The whole service panel would need upgrading. Not even sure the utility has enough transformers on the poles outside to allow many upgrades in my section of town. And every trip is around sixty miles each way for anything but groceries. We do have a Walmart with about four chargers in the lot, but I would need a wheelchair to get to the store from where they are located. My duplex was built right after WWII with all gas appliances and I think it is only a sixty amp service, so the clothes dryer and A/C that were added later push it to the limit. Actually a little past safe if they run at the same time as other things.

I know that you've got your remote regions there, but you should see Australia. Confirmed in a comment from @flipadavis which states:
"Everyone is absolutely misunderstanding what Edmunds is saying.
But that wouldn't create as much hysteria and get as many clicks."

I run into some early adopters who are unhappy about the price drop of their cars and somehow think by going back to an ICE car they will insulate themselves from future reductions in price. But the horse is already out of the barn, closing the door is pointless. I guess they didn't know what early adopter meant. Another factor is apartment renters might find charging difficult if they live outside California (and time consuming). If you can Level 2 charge at home, there is nothing like it. The thing they don't tell you (Edmonds is known to be anti Tesla BTW) is that most people do not trade in their Tesla to a dealership. The only thing they had the statistics for is trading into a dealership. The majority of Tesla's are not traded into dealers, they are traded into Tesla (which doesn't have dealers so was not counted by Edmonds) or they are sold on an online service that specializes in selling EVs, or a service for selling on the private market (like auto trader).

The exceptions have been for people who travel long distances frequently. They do not like being able to only stop at specific places for 45 minutes. Americans travel a lot. Take a lot of long distance road trips. It's going to take time to get the charging situation smoothed out... need more superchargers, for sure, which is obviously in progress.

But there isn’t. I’ve driven a Tesla for years and like most people, the reason I want a new vehicle is that the mileage is getting up there and I’m bored with it. There are many things I like about it, but many things I don’t like. And Tesla doesn’t offer anything new. When you buy a new car you want to be excited about it. There are certain realities that go with EV ownership and in particular, Tesla ownership. Amongst these is the dismal resale value.
I'm in Australia. The depreciation on a model 3 Tesla is eyewatering, here. For plenty of consumers, that puts them off ever setting foot back in the water with the same brand ever again. And then there is the "X" factor. What is the "X" factor? It's Musk. He's gone from hero to zero and a lot of consumers no longer want to be identified with him. If the US govt really wants to push EVs then they need to help and also require apartment parking spaces to have access to level 2 charging. This should be the default mandate for all new apartments as well as govt money made available for existing apartments to implement it.
Possibly this could be limited to multi-apartment properties having more than 20 apartments... at least at first.

I don't want to drive a car and wait to actually "fuel" the car which also takes a long time. I speak from a perspective of a person who does not have home charging. Also we have like 5 -18 different providers with different prices for charging. Yeah people like to know what does it cost to actually "refuel" your car. In addition you have to drive an EV a lot of years if you buy one to not make a loss since the devaluation of thos cars is higher than that of normal petrol cars. Reason is the development of new batteries with more range and higher charging speed. My personal opinion is to drive the current petrol car until it is too expensive to repair and than decide if EVs are a useful option for the person.

I can tell you way, and it really comes down to two reasons, well, three.
One, charging infrastructure, and two, the United States is BIG, so people like to drive and go far and have the convivence of gas infrastructure. I remember driving through Nebraska and was concerned that I would run out of gas, because gas stations from where I was, were not open after 5 p.m. meaning I had to drive 100 miles to fill my take, and I was very concerned I would run out, because temps would drop sub 0 (Celsius).
two, charging speed, while the DC chargers are fast, they're not nearly as readily available as gas stations.
The third, in the United States there is a massive slander campaign against EVs, in fact, it's part of people's identity. It's almost as if you can't be a patriot, Christian, or a republican if you own an EV.
(sidenote) I think Musk made a very bad mistake, because progressives and liberals are openly saying that they are less likely to support anything Musk is a part of.
As to your last question, nobody I've talked to would go back to ICE.
and Sam, please stop using the word "retarded". It's time to retire that, and for all those that are interested, please youtube, "End the R word".

The rim cracked 300 miles from home, had to drive 200 miles round trip to bring tire shop a rim.
Total cost to fix 3 flats $3000.00 with lost time.

Here is a summary of Hertz rental car real world experience with EVs: As of April 2024, Hertz has been selling off its electric vehicles (EVs) and has said that they are unreliable and more expensive than gas-powered cars. The company had previously planned to convert 25% of its fleet to electric by the end of 2024, but in January 2024, it announced plans to sell around 20,000 EVs, including Teslas, and instead opt for gas-powered vehicles. Hertz cited higher expenses related to collision and damage for EVs, which can cost about twice as much to repair as comparable combustion engine vehicles. The company also reported higher-than-expected depreciation of its electric models and a $392 million loss for the first quarter of 2024.

Hertz made a bad business decision and tried to "cash in" on the EV boom. They also approached the project with very unreasonable expectations, didn't bother to understand the basics of how to get into the EV rental business and expected the same business model that worked for ICE vehicles to work for EVs. In fairness, a lot of people think an EV is just a gas car with a different drivetrain. A Tesla is NOT just that, now if Ford made a properly-priced EV that WAS just that - stalks, switches and all - they would be doing much better.
STUPIDITY in the corner office at it's finest, followed by denial and the "blame game". If I were an institutional shareholder Hertz would be looking for a smarter CEO right now.
There are some good analyses of WHY Hertz messed up (of course hindsight is 20/20); they rushed to cash in and didn't even think about the sheep - I mean customers. Multiple reasons to fail, but when I looked into renting a Model 3 to try one out (no Tesla store nearby) Turo was a FAR better choice. Hmmm ... yup Tesla's fault.

Think of Hertz back in 1902 deciding to rent a newfangled "horseless carriage" to a driver that only knows to "drive" a horse and buggy. Once new driver finds that the whip is now a "gas peddle" and floors it driving the "car" straight into a tree! Come back to 2022 and this is what I believe happens going from a regular ICE vehicle to a Tesla. I don't, as of yet, own a Tesla, but test drove a MY last spring. After 5 miles of city driving, I felt like I've been driving it for months! The technology was so amazing it nearly brought me tears! For the precious 45 min "test" drive, I kept discovering more and more cool features! It may not be for everyone...yet...But, for me, it's my next car.

Everyone always wants to bring up Hertz to bash on electric cars, and there is one piece of truth in it. EVs are not for stupid people yet, and Hertz proved they are also not for stupid companies yet either. There are a lot of advantages to EVs, but yes, you need to research them and see if they work for you before buying them, and yes, that was probably true for the "horseless buggy" 100 years ago too. It won't be true forever. As more people buy EVs the knowledge will spread, as more charging stations are built and kept more reliably, and the range continues increasing on the less expensive EVs, range anxiety will go away and EVs will be for everyone.
Keep in mind with Hertz one of the problems they had was that they were renting these cars out to uber and lyft drivers and self insuring them. Yeah, that was stupid, maybe they should have looked into that a bit more before making that numskull business decision. Sure, Tesla shares some of the blame too, maybe they should have asked Hertz what they were planning to do with the vehicles, and maybe they should build enough spare parts to fix the cars when they are in accidents. That is not an EV problem, it is specifically a problem Hertz and Tesla made together by not actually communicating.

I love my Tesla’s and would not go back to ICE nor to another EV maker. I got my first Roadster in 2008 and it still drives great. I have owned multiple Model S’s since and my favorites are my 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid and 2018 Model S P100D. I sometimes choose one or the other depending on how necessary it might be to have a quick horn (the newer Model S’s and X’s have the horn as a small button on the wheel / yoke)…I consider both cars excellent. I still have my 2015 Model S P90D (in a different town where I have a cottage) and it still works great. Very little battery loss even in the 2008 Roadster or the 2015 Model S. I’ve been considering trading in the older Model S for a new Model X Plaid, though honestly I have no real reason to do so other than the desire to keep up with the tech advances. I may decide to go with a Model Y Juniper instead, once they are out. Love the Tesla’s. Just in case of emergency, like an extended electrical blackout, I do keep a Hybrid Highlander SUV but I rarely use it other than when I need to hold 7 passengers. So far, no emergency use needed. And it does feel like going back to the horse and buggy era when I drive an ICE car, no matter how fancy.

I like my Polestar, incredibly quick & practical around town, not having to visit a gas station or having to worry about oil changes and all the other maintenance is great. The one big disadvantage is range, road trips are 'painful'(for me) needing to stop every 2/2,5hrs to charge and then having to worry about where to charge when arriving at destination.

There are two main factors that lead to someone trading in a Tesla for an ICE car. The biggest culprit is relocation. Moving to an apartment building without decent charging infrastructure or moving to a more rural location without access to super chargers. The second issue is that Tesla does not offer as much money for trade-ins as a dealership. The end result is that you are better off selling your EV and buying a new one than to trade it in to Tesla. The end result being that most of the trade-ins that happen will be to dealerships that are often actively trying to sell you an ICE vehicle.

  • @ColbyAzimuth

Perhaps the statistic actually indicates that: ... Of the Tesla owners that have decided to go back to gasoline, and therefore they go to an ICE dealership, half of them succeed with their intention while half of them change their mind and trade to another EV after all. Even though they went all the way to an ICE dealership, full of ICE cars, being talked to about ICE cars, with an ICE car on their mind, half of them still changed their mind and went for another EV.
    Those people? Those particular cherries?

One reason I can think of for wanting a PHEV is for flexibility. That is, you can use the battery for your short haul day to day driving, but if you want to go on a long road trip, or have any difficulty charging for whatever reason, you have your gasoline/petrol engine available for that. I most certainly would NOT drive an EV if I had to travel long distances, indeed, or for that matter if I lived in a place without a private driveway where I could install a charger.

A point to consider, as far as the trading in of Teslas for ICE vehicles is, #1 the US as a whole actually pays much less for gas (gasoline), or petrol as much of the world says. In fact, we actually pay by the gallon, whereas most everyone else measures it in liters. Another point, MOST cities in the US don't have a prominent build out of charging stations as of yet. So, mostly, it's people who either own a home or have a situation where they can charge at home. Also, A lot of US states are comparable in size to some European countries. Also, in large cities, a commute often takes an hour or more. So, range anxiety is a real thing. That combined with the potential hassles of limited charging locations, I think, has really kept EVs from wider adoption. My 2 cents.
