GIBRALTAR NATIONAL DAY, GREAT SIEGE ANTHEM.

'To the Rock' was written as part of a Musical on Gibraltar. This music was played on National Day prior to the Mayor's speech in John Mackintosh Square (The Piazza) for some successive years when National Day was depoliticised during Sir Peter Caruana's (Chief Minister's) term of office which ended in 2011. The music was also broadcast on GBC Radio and later in the evening to synchronise the National Day Firework Display which was broadcast live on GBC Television. The Anthem is a moving tribute to General George Augustus Eliott, who during the Great Siege 1779-83, against all the odds - including inevitable famine, secured the fortress of Gibraltar for Great Britain. May he always be remembered.
