- A detailed exposition of the infamous Hell-Fire Club, it's membership, including the life and times of it's founder Sir Francis Dashwood 2nd Bt of West Wycombe, Premier Baronet of Great Britain. This documentary which took 2 years to research was shot in 1978 in the amateur film gauge of Super 8mm using a Leicina Super RT1. Unfortunately during storage, both the film visual and magnetic stripe quality have suffered considerably over the years. During restoration, copyrighted music was removed and it was also possible to retrieve some of the original quarter inch tapes containing the narrative which was recorded in 1978 using Ferrograph recording equipment. The film was shown in 1978 in West Wycombe and Marlow on Thames, Buckinghamshire raising over £500 for many local charities. It was later requested for showing in Universities. The film is hellishly heavy on recorded facts and dates, nevertheless, we hope you enjoy this somewhat tedious amateur relic of the past.
Thank you! This is such a thorough documentary on the club. Very well done.
Many thanks.
wow. love how they used such pleasant music while discribing these wicked people, places and practices. unbelieveble. heavy pandering and smoothing of evil deeds and wicked exercises. wow.
Such a wonderful film, thank you
Thank you so much. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
What a find! Thanks to all involved
Well researched
Thank you.
This is superb, thanks for uploading !
Thank you for your kind words. It really needed dramatizing, but we didn't have access to professional actors. It's so heavy on dates. When it was first shown, the audience made a very hasty retreat at the end, some holding their heads and dosing with copious amounts of Paracetamol, some tried to escape at the interval but I recall my late Mum, who incidentally did the narration, standing in front of the village hall main entrance informing them, almost as if they were under some sort of house arrest, that they must surely stay for the second part, lol. They waddled back to their seats muttering something in the hope that the Samaritans were not closed that evening.

Most excellent documentary.
Thank you, Stephen. Apologies for my late response. It took a lot of researching. It would have been great if video cameras had been available, as the visual limitations of Super 8mm and sychronised sound were quite challenging at the time of filming. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
I can't find the mentioned book by Alan Brooks Palmer on Sir Francis's Life. Could you lend a hand?
Hi Ahmet, There was never a mention of the word book. The narrator merely stated that Alan was a historian and had made an extensive study on the life and times of Sir Francis Dashwood 2nd Bt. I'm sorry. Maybe he should have written the book.
@@propellingcat Thank you, sir.
You are very welcome.
I love this, I've always wanted to know what this music is called. I love west Wycombe and the caves, it feels like home. The Hell Fire Club, the original has inspired me to form my own society, so maybe one day, thanks for this film, great stuff.
Thank you, Malcolm. I'm glad you enjoyed it. You've lost me a bit on the music? lol. I used to live fairly close to West Wycombe and indeed Medmenham and from an early age I was always intrigued by the West Wycombe caves, but did not learn of the significance of them until much later.
Been there a few times soon have to go Again
Strange, video won't play for me. Oct 2021.
Hi Michael, Sorry you are unable to play this. I am not aware of any technical issues currently. Just running it through now. I hope you are able to resolve it. Maybe try and upload it on another device. Charles.
Sorry I mean download it to another device.
@@propellingcat works fine now so was my end, thank you. Very interesting content.
I am a Wilkes. Descendent of John Wilkes.
Wow. Wilkes was such a colourful character of that period. That's an amazing connection. During research around 1976 we were fortunate to have traced a descendant of Giuseppe Mattia Borgnis. Unfortunately during the Victorian Period the majority of records pertaining to the club were destroyed and very little remains, save that of the Cellar Book Records......We did, however, find some evidence that Benjamin Franklin was a double agent given the No 72 and Secret Intelligence may have been heliographed from a tower in Camberley, Surrey to the West Wycombe Church Ball. Apart from John Norris being involved, the information is very scant.
Lol
Too much introduction.
Hi Asalia, I would be grateful for a little more detail. Thanks.
