Cael was this rare talent that was fundamentally sound at every position on the mat. He was great standing great on top and great on bottom. He was literally unbeatable in college. There was no answer for him.
Crazy seeing my old highschoool gym teacher going up against this legend. Coach Jones got my full respect. Graduated in 23 wish I got to appreciate him more especially after starting my MMA journey.
Cael is one of the greatest sportsman of all time, in any sport. The guy he is against in this video is an amazing athlete himself, but Cael made him look like a kid kinda, and im not fronting against Vertus, its just Cael was just that good.
Just imagine if Cael wrestled nowadays with a three point takedown. Thank god it was only two back then or else we’d never see the guy wrestle past the first period
Some negative comments about Jones, which are totally unfair. Jones was a great wrestler, having All American finishes of runner-up, third, runner-up during his prestigious NCAA career. It's simply a matter of how good Sanderson truly was. For the record the closest Sanderson ever came to varsity defeat (notice the word varsity...therefore Paul Jenn doesn't count) was actually against Jones. The score I believe was 5-5 & Sanderson had riding time. Jones came within literal seconds of scoring a reversal but if memory serves me correct, time ran out before the move was completed. Therefore Sanderson won 6-5. No one else ever gave Sanderson a scare during his four years of varsity wrestling. I think something should be noted on that.
Stephen Stonebraker do u mean his unattached red shirt loss Haha there’s no JV in D1 wrestling lol. When ur redshirted and competing it’s called unattached it has nothing to do with varsity. If Douglas didn’t want to sit the blue chip he would have easily been in the line up. In his four seasons of d1 college wrestling he never lost but he did drop one basically in a pre season open tourney as a independent wrestler who wasn’t competing in the season. It’s like exhibition open tourneys. I wouldn’t say it’s not varsity lol but I wouldn’t count it as a real loss but it was. He was in college and wasn’t gonna have a season that year so wanted mat time against other wrestlers and guys like Spencer lee and Myles Martin red shirt and wrestle open tourneys unattached early in the season and then sometimes get pulled out of the red shirt for nationals and go and win it. It’s still a match in a college tourney he lost but that being said his four years of eligibility he never lost won nationals every year then won the Olympics so who really cares hahah
According to Damion Hahn's bio(a 2-time NCAA champion and the current head coach at SDSU) it also mentions that he almost beat Cael when he was a Redshirt freshman but lost 4-3.
Luis, yeah, I remember hearing of Hahn having the closest score against Sanderson - but also knew maybe someone else may have matched that. I would've like to see Greg Jones at his peak against Sanderson. They missed each other by not all that much.
@@number3stunner118 - Greg was a freshman Sanderson's senior year. The season was 01-02. That year Sanderson would've demolished him. As to Hahn in the 00-01 season he did give Sanderson a 1 point match. Some thought that Hahn might meet Sanderson in the finals but he was upset early on by Scott Justus of Virginia Tech & came back to finish 5th.
winning 19 to 6 is pretty dominant. Domination. Has any Wrestler been as dominant since? I wonder if Ben Kueter of Iowa this year freshman can do very well based on his high school career.
So, for anyone still commenting on this, I have two questions. Who do you think would win prime for prime, Dan Gable or Cael Sanderson? And who do you think was a harder working wrestler? Both separate questions
Seus Pesos satiev got btfo by slays power double, imagine what Cael’s unstoppable ankle pick would do to him. Satiev would probably be sent to gulag after the match out of national embarassment
First name Last name not saying I disagree with your opinions, but the only thing I kind of protest is how you say Iowa wrestles. You say that all they actually do is push and shove but don’t go for a lot of take downs. Gable would be hard on his guys if they didn’t try for takedowns. The entire point of the Iowa style of wrestling is to score as many points as possible, and back in the 70s and 80s, a lot of his wrestlers did do this, they scored a lot of points and dominated they’re opponents. So, I have a different about the Iowa style, it was meant to score many takedowns or just get points wherever. If you want my opinion on why Iowa hasn’t been as dominant, is because Gable isn’t in charge of Iowa anymore and no one tells Iowa’s wrestlers to play aggressively apart from just pushing and shoving, but they do go for takedowns. Sorry that I posted this comment, I’m not disagreeing with your opinion at all, it’s just I’m a huge fan of the Iowa style and to say that it wasn’t effective and it didn’t allow for many takedowns when that was its prime objective, it kind of ticked me off. Please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not disagreeing with you at all
That’s gotta be Donnie and Greg Jones oldest brother right ? Caels ankle pick is like watching Jordan hit his mid range jumperz and I love how he always acts like he’s been there before cuz he has 😂
I really do wonder who comes closest to Sandersons career as a college wrestler? Does only maybe Kyle Dake come close to it? I wonder who will even come close to matching it. Videos like this you would expect to get over 500,000 views to 1 million views. I think only the Daniel Cormier video tops 1 million. I believe that one has over 3.2 million. Cormier's name must be part of why and his great UFC career.
@@jannorris4140 I'm not sure if they counted it on their records, but he lost to Cael at the All-Star Classic earlier that season. It was actually pretty close as Jones almost reversed him for the win at the very end of the match.
Those are all true, however, what you've left out is that that is simply international freestyle stuff. He is one of the greatest overall wrestlers, the greatest amateur collegiate wrestler, and still won a fricken gold medal with a dislocated shoulder that happened in the quarterfinals. He grit through it and was able to squeak out the win against Moon Eu Jae (the Korean).
Cael was this rare talent that was fundamentally sound at every position on the mat. He was great standing great on top and great on bottom. He was literally unbeatable in college. There was no answer for him.
He was glorious

The greatest wrestler of our time His accomplishments need proper recognition. This is so hard it exceeds world championships in every other sport.

He does wrestle he pushes all those studs he brings into Penn State.

Cael- such a Class Act!
Cael is the best! Douglas does not get enough credit for coaching the only undefeated wrestler.
How many men had dreams (and nightmares) of wrestling Cael and beating him...
And Cael crushed every single one of those dreams😅💪☝️
THATS MY GYM TEACHER VERTUS
The GOAT of all sport
Would love to see Vertus Jones vs Mitch Clark uploaded as well. Vertus is so unlucky with who he went against in each of his finals.
Cael Sanderson is the GOAT
That ankle pick.
The things cael does are crazy... especially against the level of opponents he faces
Fast forward 2 years when Vertus’ brother Greg showed up on the scene to put respect on the Jones name by cleaning house and winning a few NCAA titles
Sandesrson the legend
Undefeated in college
Olympic Gold Medalist
10x NCAA Chamption as a coach
Across all aspects of the sport he's dominated
Jones is a GREAT wrestler.
Cael just happened to be the best of all-time
Not to mention the most humble athlete who ever lived.
winning 19 to 6 is pretty dominant. Domination. Has any Wrestler been as dominant since? I wonder if Ben Kueter of Iowa this year freshman can do very well based on his high school career.
Love the Jones family at WVU
You know dudes that Wrestled Sanderson in Colkege tell everyone their story like Al Bundy reliving his highschool Days.
that color man is so smart
Anyone else think this Sanderson kid have a bright future in wrestling?
He was humble back then just as he is now.
That was crazy.
Man it looks like Jones is just giving Cael his ankles smh
But it's probably just Cael making it look that easy lol
Did Sanderson ever get taken down🙂
Yes
Yep, including Daniel Cormier in the finals the following year.
At 7:10 Jones was in a good position and just conceted the stailmate
Yeah he almost seemed like he wasn't really interested or maybe he was gassed but he just didn't seem like he was wrestling his best match
Who did he go against his freshman year?
Brandon Eggum (Minnesota)
Brandon Eggum. He's now Minnesota's coach.
B. Eggum was a beast too!!
Who whistled at 1:47😭😭😭
Sanderson vs. Mitch Clark... Who wins?
So, for anyone still commenting on this, I have two questions. Who do you think would win prime for prime, Dan Gable or Cael Sanderson? And who do you think was a harder working wrestler? Both separate questions
chael by rape over don.
Sanderson
Both equals
Cael smokes gable. Saitiev smokes cael with the weight difference
Seus Pesos satiev got btfo by slays power double, imagine what Cael’s unstoppable ankle pick would do to him. Satiev would probably be sent to gulag after the match out of national embarassment

Classic
Les Hutches , Albert Saritov , Sharif Sharifov , Sazhid Sazhidov beat Carl Sanderson.
