when i started bricklaying a few decades ago you was given on a job a gague rod to keep the bricks to the right height. as a youngster back then we worked out that you could build part of the corner, and place the rod against the quoin, jam some blocks behind it and crack on. PROFILES .
Charlie you don’t have to justify yourself to anyone mate. Keep doing what your doing, there will always be haters, just means you are doing something right 👍🏻
Funny you mention the bits of 4x2 my grandad is 85 was a bricklayer his whole life he was telling me back in the day he was using 4x2 even had his mate make him up some clamps he designed 🤣
I can’t believe anyone would actually say that corner building would be better than profiles 65 year old Bricky wouldn’t dream of building a corner when a profile is far more efficient what a wanker
I have seen many of your videos. B.layer of 30 yrs, site manager etc. It depends on the project and logistics, it is far more efficient to set up profiles whilst you are waiting for silo mortar to arrive. Smaller works maybe not be as efficient with profiles depending on the work, but large site works/projects are much better as you can set up profiles and levels while waiting on mortar to arrive, also maintains consistency among people of varying skills/exp.
The only way to settle this is to meet up and have a brick off, Dean on the corners charlie on the profile let the best man win, could even have 10grand on it fuck it
Profiles are faster without a doubt appsulutly no argument. Good Bricklayers know when to use which method and all Bricklayers should be able to build accurate corners at speed. Young Bricklayers should be taught to build corners and put up profiles efficiently.
Don't know why yous are rubbing each others up with your views on this ,it's each to their own and what you prefer ,just keep quality and making a good job of your work for the people who will spend 25 years or so paying for it👍
To be blunt I think Mr Songer is the only one who comes even close to being a traditional bricklayer in the real sense. I was trained in the old city and guilds which was all theory and feature work of techniques going back 100 years and we were taught that (timber) profiles were used a lot 100 years ago as plumb levels were primitive and consisted of a slotted peice of wood and a suspended plumb Bob. I was working for a contractor once, he sent another brickie to help me and asked me around lunchtime if he was any good, I said " if this c&^t stands still much longer I'll pull a line off him and use him as a profile" boss replied " you cant do that the wall will have a belly in it"!!! Hopefully there is a balance of good money and enjoying your work whichever way you choose
Hi Charlie, I'm a bricklayer of 41 years, so maybe I could be considered a traditional bricklayer, ha! I've been using Blake's profiles since the 80's and a variety of Dutch pin and various clamps which I brought back from my stint in Germany. Profiles every time, mate! And guess what? I can build a corner 21 courses high with a level, but do I have to? no! After watching the TTB video, all i can say to him is well done champ, go and take a shower now!
Hi Joe, sorry for delayed answer, I don’t have a channel as I’m a bit of a technophobe lol. This is my wife’s account as I don’t even know how to set up another lol 😂
Are we on our to a charity boxing match lads 🙄 I see where we are going with this. I reckon it will have to be catch weight tho deans carrying a bit of timber
From my experience, I worked mostly residential here in the states and we set profiles as you call them all the time. And laborers were anyone you could find that wanted a job. If they showed some ability and wanted to do the work then they would be laboring until the next guy came along. Then you try them on the trowel. All they really had to learn was to lay to a line and that's all they did. For every ten guys you might find one that you could teach to build corners that became any good at it. So you had many guys that could lay a brick or block to a line, but very few actual bricklayers/masons. If you wanted to keep learning the sky was the limit but now the true bricklayer has lost much of what was an abundance of work due to cost. Houses don't have full masonry fire places or even chimneys anymore and there's a lot of concrete walls and fake stone and brick being done. ☺
Pricework bricklayers go to work to earn money and profiles are the most efficient way to to do it people that say they can build corners and run in as quick as using profiles are lying, that said a good bricklayer should be able to do both and there are times that you need to do both
Tune into the Belgian Brickie Jay Poyenbroek who builds award winning homes in Belgium. They set out all the profiles before they lay a brick. Comers are probably better when your in the garden wall business. Keep the faith Charlie lad👍
Not a hope would anyone lay a corner quicker without a profile... if you have to reach for a level for every time it's time wasted... as a carpenter we have jigs for things they save time and they're right all the time... make life as handy as possible for yourself... and what ive seen alot of brickies cant read a level anyway
If were talking about purely speed and efficiency there is no doubt as long as I have a hole in my arse that profiles are much much faster than building a corner...ive been at it along time and can do both really well but profiles all day long for efficiency.
I would just add that you have to do what you feel happy with. It also depends how many you have in your gang, whether you have everything loaded out or a dead start. Corners or profiles can depend on whether u are supplied early with muck and a decent quantity. Someone (an old top trowel) it's not how quick you lay bricks it's what you do in between. (Organisation)
My husband has been bricklaying for over 35 years and always watch your channel for shared best practices and being productive to earn that extra quid that’s leads to 2 and so on. He watched the other video and said nothing good would come from building a corner without a level…..it’s not traditional. Proper rough! Keep passing on your tips Charlie 👍.
Adapting to different situations sometimes corners most of the time profiles, worked around the world a bit profiles used everywhere, especially for timber framed buildings...think hendos would look at you a bit funny if you started building a corner.....TTB must be chuffed they named a profile clamp after him 🤔
Hi Charlie, I am not a bricklayer/builder, so you may say I have no right to comment,.. However, if I was your client and you were building my new house I all that I would care about is the quality of your workmanship, and I can tell you I am not interested in the speed of your bricklaying or the techniques you deploy, its the quality of my house that matters to me, and whether you lay 2000 bricks a day or 200 I could not care less its the quality of the build, and compared to other builders and the houses I have seen built which were shit, the quality of your work is top class, and would rather wait for as long as it takes for you to build my house that a rushed job against the “builders clock” etc, You are a top class builder Charlie and stay true to your brand!! Respect 👍
Alright Charlie, been watching your vids for a while now and find them very enjoyable until today mate. You said profiles have been round for donkeys years 55 years, cheers mate I'm 56 and I feel like a worn out ancient donkey now.
I've been bricklaying since 1982, I was taught how to build corners like you Charlie at college, including all the different bonds, but I must say profiles are the more productive way to earn money, especially site work, great vids keep them coming I'm still learning at my age 👍
I'm a brickie of 33 years after watching your vids decided to try profiles I find sometimes it makes a mess of the qoin bricks think I'm putting too much Mudd on I'm still learning .But I can wack a corner up plum gauge quick time so I'm very undecided probably me doing it wrong 👍👍👍👍😂
Never used to use profiles in Ireland but started using them in England and now wouldn't be without them although not overly fussed with using them with blockwork 👍
Yeah, I rarely bother on blockwork, I can get a block corner pretty quick, I think the last time was in January, but it was a long pull on a commercial site using heavy newt 6" blocks, but normal 4" I won't bother.
No need to explain yourself Charlie most are just jealous of you buddy. Nobody is building a corner with 250 bricks in it 38mins. If they it will be leaning like pound of mince. Lol 😆😆 yeah line up 😎😎😆😆🤟
In Australia, nobody really builds corners,it's always profiles gauge line let's go. It take about 2 mins to set a profile on an existing wall stopped end, and about 3 minutes to set a profile on a timber frame with the top clamps(for veneer houses) If there's no brickwork to clamp it against you just throw two timbers on the profile and g clamp them, adjust it plumb, probably takes 3 mins Max,much more efficient and always seen here in Australia
@@M1cko33 because we build brick veneer most of the times? Or because we use profiles? Either way our houses stay up,it's just that we have alot of immigrants from Afghanistan and other asian countries who come here and work and don't put out quality work which give us a bad reputation, quality Aussie homes look good if done right and hold up even better, and that is if you build it by profile or if you build it by brick veneer it doesn't matter the house will stay strong
@@p.maesthetics7154 afghans do not have any training why are people letting them on site to lay bricks. in afghanistan some houses are made of unbaked bricks or stones depends on location
@@zaidhussain3658 they get in secretly,if one person can get a start with a company home, then he can literally call in 10 mates who don't have any qualifications and the company home supervisors won't even know about it, usually afghans work for afgan builders so they can sneak in like that, they also go for very cheap which is why they get the jobs, and if they get say 150$ a day (which isn't much),that 150$ in Afghanistan turns to heaps. Meaning you could just live like a king over there, they all work together, each culture works with their own cultures because they relate easier
For me personally I would say profiles are more efficient with time. I work on my own on most builds( the only brickie) putting profiles up gets me started a lot quicker, instead having to build two corners then run in then another two corners.
I’m a joiner and know nothing of brick laying but from what I’ve watched online and sites it’s obvious to me it’s profiles all day long, by the way brush ur hair u scruff ur on tv 😂 enjoy ur vids mate keep them coming 👍🏻
I'm old school and prefer corners. I have used profiles in the past and they have there uses on occasions. For house building I prefer to build 10/11 course corners and extend them by line work so you can rack them back to hit 21 ish courses. Sometimes you can build the reveal of the first window closest to the corner. I'm definate a pro corner builder but I suppose people may not agree.
On a housing site many years ago the site manager informed me he was a bricklayer and he built all the corners when he was on the tools. To which I replied MR BLAKE BUILDS all mine. Profiles every time.
You’re at the top of the game mate.. keep your head up and crack on 👍👍 Alot of people seem to be jumping on the bandwagon against you, so to me that’s shows you’re at the top. After all, jealousy starts from the bottom 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve been a bricklayer since 1983, I’m not going to start saying o I’ve been building longer than you,so I’m better than you, because that’s just total rubbish, yet I hear this all the time, anyway I do agree profiles are the Buisness, to make money it’s all about the best way to do this, so yes profiles are the way to get the job done fast. It’s a tough game the bricklaying especially coming into winter, so let’s get along we’re all hard workers, so thank God we have the health and strength to get up every morning to do the job we are skilled at, God bless you all.
Rob songer by far the best bricklayer on UA-cam with stu Crompton just behind. No question. Profiles are more efficient, quicker, profitable than building corners. Building or raising a corner is a traditional method, if your talking in the grand scheme of the 2500 year history of masonry. Not just since 1966. The point ttb was making , is that if the next gen of bricklayers don't know how to build corners, through lack of practice etc, they will come unstuck on certain feature work. So we will have a generation of line monkeys, and have to cryogenically freeze Rob songer
Nice words about Rob, couldn’t agree more. As for there are people out there that are better, I think you mean there are people out there that think they are better . Keep doing what you do bud and keep doing it the way you are comfortable with
Charlie..you are certainly spot on! I'm over across the pond in New England and I'm used to building corners but I don't see to many Masons using profiles over here. However any chance I have to drop jack lines , I'm on it!! But the $$ is in the profiles!! I enjoy your channel!!
Thing is the house building companies then put out lower prices for per 1000. You are then expected to perform like a greyhound for the rest of your life on the trowel. I agree with both, but understand TB. A good Brickie is quality. 500 to 600 depending the job. A Brickie should get a decent wage for His family.. Do you want to work like a factory worker ? I do both. Only when it will suit me
No real bricklayer would even ask the question, which is the most efficient? sorry, but this generation of 'bricklayers' would not have lasted 5mins on a 1980's site.
I agree Charlie. Corner building is something every bricklayer must be able to do well but its far quicker using profiles. Also bricks badly out of shape stick out like a sore thumb when built with a corner I reckon
Anyway tilt up panels next thing in housing. And before any one says bollocks they are already here in Australia but they look like shit. Developers dont care though it's all about the MONEY 😭😭😭
im not a builder but i watch every video from all the builders on you tube and after years of brick work vids profiles are the fastest and most efficient by far
Just do what suits you, no point Bitching. If you like profiles use profiles. And pretty sure Dean wasn't suggesting He could build corners at that speed all day long, he was having a race for fun.
I'm the best bricklayer out there I can build corners with me eyes no profiles look at me shovel I can lay 1000 bricks a day easily with me eyes closed ain't it great come on boys let's go look at me arms in me tight jumper I'm not double hard I'm triple 💪😎
Corners for vanity profiles for sanity. Dont see the need for picking up levels or tape measures on price when a profile litterally does all the work for you. Is pre marked with gauge and plumbed up during set up. Fuck corners build em when I have too

Charlie my boi , ive been a bricklayer a long time ,36yrs i was useing blakes profiles then and i still use them to this day ,my son did is apprenticeship with me ,he was was taught traditionally and how to use profiles, each method as its place ,as you say today alot of housing this age are square boxes which is in hower favour, so profiles are the obvious option to use no brainer bish bosh ,loads of money 🤣Charlie like your channel your an interesting chap keep up the good work ,there are alot of up and coming bricklayers that can learn from the content you put out 👌👍
Depends on the job and scaffolding if profiles are used or building corners tbf a brickie should be able to do both and use either one efficiently. Profiles=money end of I can see this going on Jerry springer soon lol good vid Charle boy
you may not be clever Charlie but you aint lacking in common sense, as you say, bricklayers have been clamping bits of timber up as profiles for hundreds of years! peoples ego's get the better of them, this whole "i can lay more than you" mentality is stupid
Agree to everything you said 46 years laying bricks always metal wood what ever it takes to make the job easier. It is nice to build a corner buy hand now and again

when i started bricklaying a few decades ago you was given on a job a gague rod to keep the bricks to the right height. as a youngster back then we worked out that you could build part of the corner, and place the rod against the quoin, jam some blocks behind it and crack on.
I've used 4x2 for corners...straight ones if I could find them!!
Brilliant 🤣
Bin bricklaying 25 years profiles all day long ! And I agree with u on rob songer reminds me of a bloke I used too work for on the hod .
I can’t believe anyone would actually say that corner building would be better than profiles 65 year old Bricky wouldn’t dream of building a corner when a profile is far more efficient what a wanker
Simple fact is no one can lay bricks faster using a level than laying to a line! End of story
Spot on 👍🏻
Don't know why yous are rubbing each others up with your views on this ,it's each to their own and what you prefer ,just keep quality and making a good job of your work for the people who will spend 25 years or so paying for it👍
👍
Ppppppp
Perfect Profile Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. You can have that Charlie.
Do you have a Channel on the tube
Profiles zll day everyday unless building a small corner return
I just love comments like this.
Profiles all day long, by the time you've built two corners you'd have run 10courses in.
Jay most talented bricklayer i have seen on UA-cam.
It's literally not even a question.. No need to give a reason. Any Bricklayer knows the answer..
Love the passion Chaz!
Keep doing what your doing sir 👍👍💯💯
However, if I was your client and you were building my new house I all that I would care about is the quality of your workmanship, and I can tell you I am not interested in the speed of your bricklaying or the techniques you deploy, its the quality of my house that matters to me, and whether you lay 2000 bricks a day or 200 I could not care less its the quality of the build, and compared to other builders and the houses I have seen built which were shit, the quality of your work is top class, and would rather wait for as long as it takes for you to build my house that a rushed job against the “builders clock” etc,
You are a top class builder Charlie and stay true to your brand!!
Respect 👍
Alright Charlie, been watching your vids for a while now and find them very enjoyable until today mate. You said profiles have been round for donkeys years 55 years, cheers mate I'm 56 and I feel like a worn out ancient donkey now.
Sorry geez 😂
I've been bricklaying since 1982, I was taught how to build corners like you Charlie at college, including all the different bonds, but I must say profiles are the more productive way to earn money, especially site work, great vids keep them coming I'm still learning at my age 👍
Profiles 100% a lot quicker would only build a corner if i can’t fit a profile in
I'm a brickie of 33 years after watching your vids decided to try profiles I find sometimes it makes a mess of the qoin bricks think I'm putting too much Mudd on I'm still learning .But I can wack a corner up plum gauge quick time so I'm very undecided probably me doing it wrong 👍👍👍👍😂
It take about 2 mins to set a profile on an existing wall stopped end, and about 3 minutes to set a profile on a timber frame with the top clamps(for veneer houses)
If there's no brickwork to clamp it against you just throw two timbers on the profile and g clamp them, adjust it plumb, probably takes 3 mins Max,much more efficient and always seen here in Australia
So we will have a generation of line monkeys, and have to cryogenically freeze Rob songer
look up glen veness top brickie crompton is just an average bricky
@@zaidhussain3658 haha that made me laugh
is anyone taking this thing between charlie and deano seriously get a grip lads its only bricklaying
Get dean in site with you for a day profiles v traditional only way to sort it out. Then have a nice cup of tea together. Ill come and film it.
Nice words about Rob, couldn’t agree more. As for there are people out there that are better, I think you mean there are people out there that think they are better . Keep doing what you do bud and keep doing it the way you are comfortable with
Agree Charlie Profiles for cash. Level work for satisfaction.
Charlie..you are certainly spot on! I'm over across the pond in New England and I'm used to building corners but I don't see to many Masons using profiles over here. However any chance I have to drop jack lines , I'm on it!! But the $$ is in the profiles!! I enjoy your channel!!
I think there’s pros and cons for both Tbf
All depends on the site, the work, the amount of work, day/price work, work load, many factors.
Rob Songer is good Tbf so is Stu Crompton.
Dont worry Charlie you’re right up there too haha
Thing is the house building companies then put out lower prices for per 1000. You are then expected to perform like a greyhound for the rest of your life on the trowel. I agree with both, but understand TB. A good Brickie is quality. 500 to 600 depending the job. A Brickie should get a decent wage for His family.. Do you want to work like a factory worker ? I do both. Only when it will suit me
No real bricklayer would even ask the question, which is the most efficient? sorry, but this generation of 'bricklayers' would not have lasted 5mins on a 1980's site.
Ohhhh Tyson Furyyy 🇬🇧 🤴🏻
I agree Charlie. Corner building is something every bricklayer must be able to do well but its far quicker using profiles. Also bricks badly out of shape stick out like a sore thumb when built with a corner I reckon
Anyway tilt up panels next thing in housing. And before any one says bollocks they are already here in Australia but they look like shit. Developers dont care though it's all about the MONEY 😭😭😭
Old TTB is probably on £1 a brick.. I'd set up corners for that but it would be Christmas tree.
💯
im not a builder but i watch every video from all the builders on you tube and after years of brick work vids profiles are the fastest and most efficient by far
Coming from some one who builds natural stone more than anything else, profiles! Fast efficient and keeps walls nice.
Deano is bidding on a set of Blake’s as we speak on eBay💡💡💡💡
Corners for vanity profiles for sanity. Dont see the need for picking up levels or tape measures on price when a profile litterally does all the work for you. Is pre marked with gauge and plumbed up during set up. Fuck corners build em when I have too
Profiles all the way, It's faster and you can get your work just a clean and spot on without having to build corners
I totally agree with you charlie I'm self employed brickie and everything you have said is fucking spot on 👊 think dean is full of shit to be honest he wouldn't last 2 minutes on site .. I better not meet him on site hell soon get told lmfao
Absolutly hit the nail on the head,
I watched that other video yesterday had to turn it off after the comment about building a corner 5 courses with no level.
same here
Deano vs collison white collar, winner gets Jake Paul
No had profile 20 years ago I’ve been on lots off sites over the years 80 s and 90s no one had proflie is a new thing now it was all building Conner’s then
Well why dosn't dean do a video of him building a 250 brick corner then. We need proof or it may as well have never happened.
Profiles all the way I use them all the time and packed profile away from walls to get corner blocks behind so fast
your comment on the numbers is a little inaccurate. Usain Bolt can run 100m in 9 seconds, that does not mean he could run 800m in 72 seconds.
Profiles because time is money and those site agents can’t get there bonus if we don’t get those houses up 🤣
Only one way to settle this. You and TTB go at it. First to hit 2.1 wins. Simple 👍🏻😂
Mr kimber whilst I understand this "race" notion, it really isn't needed. It's a petty idea and cringey too say the least and I hope it never happens
@@martin2466 totally agree and the comment wasn't meant to cause offence!
Chuck a couple of features in the mix and slash on!!
My bad I’m slow to the story who is the other page saying they can do this lol someone point me in the direction I love the brick culture not even a brick layer want to be one though
Profiles is the way to go it takes a few minutes to set up and you get your muck and you are away and with the right gang Kerchink Kerchink !
Profiles=money end of
I can see this going on Jerry springer soon lol good vid Charle boy
you may not be clever Charlie but you aint lacking in common sense, as you say, bricklayers have been clamping bits of timber up as profiles for hundreds of years!
peoples ego's get the better of them, this whole "i can lay more than you" mentality is stupid
Exactly!
About time I see a video about it I need to show to my uncles 👌🏻always wanna build corners then use profiles
Ur both good Lads it doesn’t matter how many bricks people lay it ent a competition we just got to go to work and do our job
This is facts.. just let everyone crack on and please themselves
anyone that reckons they'd get more down per day from building corners is talking out their gary glitter
Totally agree about pros, never used them years ago but it's so much quicker, its not even debatable
Agree to everything you said 46 years laying bricks always metal wood what ever it takes to make the job easier. It is nice to build a corner buy hand now and again
Stop it, stop it. We don’t do common sense here. We do; Read between the lines, Pride, I’ve been in the trade x years, I’ve laid x thousand per hour, I’m not a brickie; but, When I was a boy, My dad, & they all lived happily ever after. 😉
I agree with you that profiles are quicker in the day to days work.
Long term however, the man who every now and then builds a corner will sharpen his skill which will pay dividends through his working life whether it is with profiles or not.
Keep the head up Charlie your videos are great and helping a lot of bricklayers 👍
