Louis Don't treat Erica that!!! It is obvious that she doesn't have training in electronics nor does she wish too. She is good at what she does and that good enough for her. My wife of 46 years was scared of mathematics and computers I tried to interest her in both but she just couldn't do it. She was an English and languages major and she was great at it, in fact if it wasn't for her help in writing I would have never made through thesis work in college. I learned to be happy in what she was and what she could do and to never try to make her like what I did. She loved me for what I was and I learned to love her for what she was. I repaired a 2009 Macbook Pro 17 inch today which had been dead for 3 years...it had a load of cheap upgrades inside it including a battery which connector didn't even stay in place without tape and unbranded ram. The charging port was water damaged with corrosion around the solder joints. Cleaned it with isopropyl and the whole board, new thermal paste, SMC reset and jump started using the Start pads on the board..dude got all his old files back..it was a good day!

Come on, man, I think you are being a little cruel here. if Erica is not technically oriented why do you try to force her about technical details? Sorry, I don't know the intricacies of your relationship, this just came to mind, I do understand about wanting your partner to understand your own specialities. And props to her always being so sweet about your technological ramblings :)
It's like any industry, where you see the same things hundreds of times a year. The advantage of apple, because its a closed ecosystem, is there are far fewer differences across the range. It's not like PC's where you can see thousands of different parts, some only once or twice, ever. It's like specializing in a particular brand. Probably the nearest analogy would be a car garage that specializes in a particular car brand, like Audi or Volvo, and the mechanic knows every single piece of the car. Not to say he couldn't fix any other brand, but just he's be far slower on others because he doesn't know them inside out. But give him the brand he works on, and he'll out-class any other mechanic. Louis is the same, there's probably a lot of electronics he could fix, but it would take him longer, but give him a macbook board, and he knows it inside out, and would outclass nearly every engineer, including 90% of Apple's own workers.

A chunky Lenovo ThinkPad L512 I've recently worked on; after a rain storm flooded the office it was in; had a stainless steel tray underneath the keyboard isolating it from the components, and little drain holes for water to drain straight below the laptop. It was fine for water dripping on the keyboard, but if water had come up from the bottom to seep into the ventilation grilles and peripheral ports, the HDD and board (like it did for a neighbouring T420), it would have suffered.
@@TechNinja.1701 So what you're saying is that it is possible to minimize the impact of water damage but Apple decided to rather go thinner and lighter?
I wanted to show an example of how other manufacturers mitigate water damage in some of their models. Louis did a video a few years back of him spilling water all over his ThinkPad. To answer your next question, I think Apple could direct their very clever engineers & designers to spill proof their MacBooks, but it seems to me that they'd need a lot of their customers and potential customers to fight through that self-imposed reality distortion bubble of theirs; the same bubble that has prevented them from properly rectifying their "butterfly" keyboards on their USB C MacBooks.
