Thanks for this basic and educational guide, Sean. I have used only a brush with acrylics so far and have been dabbling with a knife, trying to see what effects I can create. Basic strokes are something I needed to understand so your video was super in helping me see what potential there is when using a palette knife. Thank you. Mark
Thank you so much, Sean! I am new to painting, and I first picked up a paintbrush at age 60 during the shutdown last year. I bought the same palette knife that you showed us, and I look forward to playing with it. I use acrylics, and I think I may want to add some soft gel so that I can use a bit more full-bodied paint with the knife.
You are right about knives. What I don't like is to use both knives and brashes in one paintings. For me such paitings are schisofrenic. I definitly love your vision of countryside and chosen colour. My consciesness was shifted due to meditation for years and to my surprice I started to paint. I am sensitive on feedback from any paitings. Video is tutorial and nice.
Very healthful Sean. Thank you for your generosity and sharing your techniques. I especially enjoy the way you work with your knife. You look so natural. one with the process
Hey Sean, thanks so much for that tutorial. Clear, concise and doable. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. I admire a good artist. I particularly admire a good artist with the type of generous spirit that teaches and encourages lesser talents like me to create art. Thanks again. 👍
Great video. Thank God you didn't overpower your voice with music! Some videos might be great but some people feel like they need music to feel space between words. After all we're watching paint dry! Don't need music.
WOW - you are awesome. I could sit and watch you for hours IF you didn't stir up the desire to paint within me. Watching you is a wonderful experience, however you are a great motivator as well. BRILLIANT.. Thank you
I’m more of an illustrator than a painter and I wanna buy these knives because I’m really not very good at painting I don’t have any real techniques and I’d like to make a Russian Basilica but because of the war no I don’t think I wanna do that right now lol I like to paint a castle maybe something in Europe another country right now because the war is making people depressed
Hello, thank you so much for this video, I just got the knive and didnt really knew how to use it, now Im gonna watch the video one more time and try it ;)
You also have one of my drawings. Remember we made a trade some years ago? I've been trying to paint more these days and am trying to learn how to use a palette knife in combination with the brushes. I don't usually use the knife but I find that it helps in creating more interesting backgrounds, like on walls etc. I mostly do portraits and I've been using the knife on a few backgrounds but I don't have much experience with it. Looking at your painting I can see you have developed a good style. Keep up the great work!
Hi, thank you for a very good video - I loved it since I am a new beginner who want to try all kinds of different ways… I will go right away and try my pallet knives! I would love to see more of your videos!
thank you for the video, I see you have paints out on a board/palette to use as you need it, what do you do with it when you have finish your painting? Wonderful colors indeed
Hey Jim. I generally paint enough that my paints never dry out. So I don't worry about leaving them out. I used to pit plastic shot glasses over them haha. In the winter thwy freeze on my palette until I stoke my wood stove, so they stay fresh frozen as well.
Do you think it's possible to paint with only palette knives, and to put aside brushes, and all the chemicals that go with cleaning them? I would love to avoid all solvents but still paint what I want.
Hi Naomi. Yeah it is. It might be tougher to get certain details and you might want a variety of knife shapes and sizes. My father owns a John Carlson painting and we can't find a brush mark anywhere.
Hi Sean, I enjoyed watching your video. Thanks for posting it. I have been painting with painting knives for some time and love the brightness and looseness that can result from using knives. But I still have trouble making curved lines with the knife. For instance, the branches of a tree or shrub or cracks in bedrock. Not only must the lines show curvature but they must also diminish in thickness as one goes up the tree or approaches the foreground on a bedrock outcrop. in such cases, straight lines give one's paintings a stilted look. Do you have any suggestions for overcoming this problem? Thank you...

@@seanwallis7114 good to know!
Thank you for your video, you make it look so easy. I find I am having trouble getting the paint to go all the way down. I guess it's how you angle it
Yes, practice very subtle angles.
Thanks, Sean~ would you be interested in doing a "bird of paradise" flower with palette knife? I am now attempting one but am kind of blocked

Burnt Sienna thanks for your question. I going making a steoke and then working back into it allows you to control the shape of the knife stroke.
Hi Sean, new subscriber here. Cool video. Keep it up, bro! Make more videos about Palette knife painting!
Sebastian Ortiz thanks, will do.
Great video I want to start trying this. I don’t even have any tools yet. Any suggestions?
Just get cheaper paints to start and paint something simple. Key is to not get discouraged. Everyone is terrible at first haha.
Very informative. Many thanks! Question: are you using oil or acrylic paint? Thanks again
Hi Marvin. I use oil.
Who edited this video?
My daughter edits all my videos.
She did a really good job! Also you have a lot of talent. Good work.
Thank you!
You are so very welcome
Do you ever use acrylic paint?
I have toyed with it, but I just love the feel of oil and being able to paint wet on wet.
how to get the paint into the knife. always having problem with this
Not sure I understand the question.
Painting juggling.
I thought he’s Orlando Bloom
Hahahaha
you mud with knife! you paint with brush!
maddog Explain your comment!!
