I always enjoy Kenya Airways and I hope they are finally making a profit. They have a good product for the African market and I hope they and Ethiopian will stay as mainstay airlines of the African continent. We are rooting for you KQ!!!!
I love Kenya Airways flight from New York to Nairobi. The cabin crew is one of the best in the world and food is excellent. Equally, flights from Europe to Nairobi are superb. Asante sana. Hakuna matata!!
Have flown this route 4 times myself since KQ started these flights in October, 2018. Your video brought back memories of boarding at Nairobi for JFK and the gate 19.
I’ve been on Kenya Airways twice from London to Nairobi. The staff is super nice and I didn’t have complaints about anything, although it’s not exceptional. Great review and local pronunciation of Lagos.
Great video as always. To answer your question Terminal 1A was built and completed in 2014 whilst 1B-D have been there for decades. And yes they were renovated in 2017, before they were very different and honestly unpleasant to be in due to no AC. But KQ has worked hard to improve its hub which is good to see.
I actually was on Kenya airways flight on the 21st of October and it was ok, not spectacular, but to be honest I was satisfied with that. I fly Kenya airways atleast twice a year from JFK and I will say that service is about a 7 from rating of one to ten. I wouldn’t say that the Flight attendants were friendly, but polite. Kenyans love Kenya Airways and they have something to be proud of, it’s a popular flight though and even though it’s not a ten I like it and will fly them. Thanks for the video, it’s probably the most I seen on Kenya airways to JFK.
Totally! Great points! I do really like Kenya Airways, but I do agree it’s not a 10/10. They’ve got a good thing going however, and the JFK flights are a great service
@@soulrebel2006 True, but soon they are going to reintroduce the American flights. They just reintroduced Cape Town and Johannesburg to Sao Paulo flights.
Great trip report KQ is indeed a good airline. Had a wonderful experience flying two times on board KQ many years ago. Watching your trip report brought back memories. I have enjoyed every bit of it. Wishing KQ success in their future endeavors. Thank you.
Can one book from any state in the US and then get connected from that state to JFK by delta then fly the direct flight to Nairobi from there? If so, where can I do that?
Sunday morning just got better with another trip report from Pat! Thanks for the international travel tips, I had no idea that a connection would be the secret to saving on a long haul international flight 😅
For South America Africa routes Angola Airlines (TAAG) flies to Brazil and South African Airways will resume their Sao Paulo route on the 31st of October directly from Cape Town and in November from Johannesburg. So currently TAAG, SAA and Ethiopian connect Africa to South America.
guys I’m about to go on Kenya airways Nairobi to New York in only 2 days I was really worried but watching this video kinda helped me because ima fly for 15 hours straight 😂
I got the SSSS so on three trips around 2014-2015, all of them when I was a minor travelling as a dependent of an American diplomat (using a diplomatic passport). No one else in my family ever got it while we travelled together. I haven’t gotten it since and I’ve taken quite a few trips that would meet a lot of the speculated selection criteria (frequent travel to unusual or high-risk countries, one-way tickets, last minute bookings, etc.). Also, around the same time period I frequently got pre-check on my tickets despite not being enrolled in pre-check. I guess the us government couldn’t decide if I was a threat or not 😂
I am a regular passenger in KQ Nairobi to New York City my second home. New York to Nairobi at least two times a year. Cabin crews super. Meal delicious. Check in is fast and efficient. Thank you KQ.
You should Fly Ethiopian airways JFK TO ABJ. One of two Ethiopian routes to fly into NYC area. Only one into JFK. Data says this route relies heavily on the point to point market between New York and Abidjan. Try to get on the newer 787-9. It’s random between 787-8 and 787-9 on this route.
I am very intrigued by a lot of Ethiopian’s 5th freedom routes. Air Coté d’Ivoire has plans to launch ABJ to JFK on their A339s once those arrive. I’m definitely holding out for that!
Great review as always Patrick. I had the dreaded Secondary Security Screening Selection (SSSS) on my boarding pass for SQ24 from SIN to JFK last Thursday. Thankfully I encountered no extra security nor questions departing Singapore. Not sure if that's because it was business class or perhaps because of the gate security at Changi Airport. Regardless I was happy I wasn't delayed and ended up being first to board. Keep up the great work!
Regarding priority bags, they are generally put in their own container, which is loaded last so should be first off the plane. I find 90% of the time, especially internationally, my priority bags arrive within the first few minutes of bags on the belt. Domestically, though, it can be hit or miss.
I hope Air Algérie learns from Kenya Airways before Ethiopian, to renew their business/economy cabins or to better use their aircrafts to add routes like these
Great reporting as usual. Who was your travelling with? I'm just being nosey. You said that the table ''Was able to hold both of our phones''. 16:09 I don't understand why you haven't got more subscribers though, because your trip reports are fantastic.
flying business from Columbus, OH.....thru JFK....and on to Kenya.....and then to Tanzania. This video answers all of my questions and then some! As a business passenger, I get to go to the pride lounge for my long lay-over before Tanzania! I never would have known this. Thank you for the super information. and I changed my seat selection so I do not have to "climb over" a poor stranger at night for the restroom.
Another great vlog and interesting flight. Some airports in the USA Miami and Dallas participate in ITI International to International so if you are just transiting the US to another country you dont have to reclaim your bag but you do need to go through immigration and back through security again. I use it all the time if travelling from London to Miami to Cancun or vv but Ive not connected to a US domestic flight after arriving in the US for years.
Strange. At the airports I’ve been to at least they always say to collect and recheck your bag regardless of your final destination. Maybe I’m just unlucky though
13:24 to 13:38 is a cool segment, makes you feel as if someone else was filming from across, synced well with narration.. those socks 👌 + handy booking tip (after realizing what you were actually saying lol) "didn't really know what to do with the red throw, so it became a purdy lil accent on my bed" rofl too bad about the bumpy night and the ventless cabin (ouch) that coffee action made me feel how bumpy that was yikes.. priority bagging should def come out first esp from a long flight, it would tick me off, too
I flew American First class from SFO to Jacksonville last week with 6 checked-in bags. At the front of the luggage parade was my sister’s bag. The other 5 came out at random times throughout the process. All with the bright orange “priority” tags on them. I also caught that “trans-pacific” announcement in the beginning. Perhaps your mind is already thinking about United’s inaugural flight from SFO to Manila in a couple of weeks. 😊
My experiences with priority bag tags are inconsistent at best. But my main priority is sufficient connection time at international airports. For the record, I prefer non-stop international travel because variables involved with one-stop connections wear on me, but sometimes one-stop connections are unavoidable. Where SSSS is concerned, let's just say that I don't want to jinx myself.
Nonstop is always great, I’ve been screwed by short connections a bunch recently… but sometimes there isn’t really another option unfortunately. Good luck on not getting the ssss!!
Hi Patrick, one very minor issue - the flight you did was trans-ATLANTIC, not trans-pacific as you stated in the audio of the video, unless that's how they arrived at the flight time of 131 hours lol. It would have been a truly transoceanic flight if you had done that flight - over both the Indian and Pacific oceans. Definitely an interesting video - Kenya Airways has always been interesting to me - one of the first operators of new generation widebodies in Africa and developing a competitive product in the process.
Another great video Patrick. You are correct about those special bg tags. Is more for show than anything else! Wheb everyone is special no one is special. 🤷🏻♂️
Nice video. About the skiplagging method to get a cheaper ticket, I understand that airlines frown upon it, in fact in US domestic sector it is considered a breach of the flight terms and can lead to an airline ban.
Been enjoying your reports more and more lately, this one is no exception. Good insight into a carrier I will probably not fly just due to the nature of my overseas travels, interesting nonetheless. From the looks of it, both NBO and ADD are the more modern airports of eastern Africa. Also, 15-20 minutes of taxiing at JFK is a good day, just saying ;). Nice review!

This is the most recent and comprehensive KQ review i have watched for a while. Most of the times, videos last say 20 min but they spend 15 min packing home and biding farewell at airport 😂 then 4 min for take off (in landscape mode 😢) and the remaining 1min for the rest 😂😂😂. Many thanks for sharing While not familiar with the jfk route ( but more on the Cdg/ams to/from east africa services), your video features new nice airport facilities, new show cooking in lounge, new mattress pad on board. Be KQ, ET, Uganda Airlines, Air Tanzania and RwandAir. Asante sana.
Thanks man!! I really do enjoy the African aviation market. There is so much more to explore. I’m trying to get out to Tanzania/Uganda/Rwanda sometime soon to try those flag carriers 🤞🤞
I have had the dreaded SSSS once in Berlin and once in Munich. Not anywhere else yet haha I feel like it is not random at all. Edit both times I got the SSSS I had car parts as my carryons 😂
Good video. I am confused on how you booked cheaply. You booking Kinshasa to Nairobi to JFK to Toronto. But you got in plane only in Nairobi and got out land side in JFK. Won’t you be blacklisted by the airline? How about checked in bags? 😊
Kenyans love piling on Kenya Airways as not the best of airlines or offering the best of service. However, it's always interesting to see that foreigners love Kenya Airways.
I have a question. I f you bbok as a connecting flight, how then do you collect your luggage when you land. wouldn't it be checked although to the final destination say Canada for this particular flight?
When you land in the US you have to collect your bags and transfer them manually to the connection belt. so in this case simply pick you bags and walk out
Elite status with AA and fly exclusively domestic first or their Flagship Biz. Priority bag check is very inconsistent. At some stations bag out first round. Sometimes not. Fly to HNL often. AA Priority bags there often come out dead last. I think perhaps HNL handlers do it on purpose. Who knows?
0'25" : "transpacific route to New York" : if the flight route is over the Atlantic Ocean, shouldn't it be "transatlantic route to New York" the right name? 🤔
If I recall my airline days, SSSS means Subject Selected for Security Screening or in short nickname "Selectee" ....it's generally based on certain countries that are seen "in a bad light" for any reason, i.e., terrorism, human rights issues, etc. It's also an algorithm that will choose European or US passports that may have come from a region that is a possible security threat or another algorithm is someone that buys a last minute ticket less than 24 hours before a flight. Hope that helps 😊
@@PatrickSheaAviation Its probably a lot more sophisticated today as my knowledge of working with it was a little post 911 days (actually the reason it was created and extended in logic using systems like TIMATIC, DOJ, OFAC, INS ...now CBP), but I won't use the word "random". There are definitely algorithms in place that determine why someone would be SSSS. Could be something as a simple as "close enough" matching name and "close enough" DOB of someone of interest.
one question: as a business traveler, I get 2 checked bags. Is it possible to take my roll-bag and a backpack as my carry-ons? I will take these to the airport here to test for size, but as "business" do we get a little wiggle room? I am hiking Kilimanjaro and the thought of losing my luggage on 2 transfers is making me panic a bit.
Sounds like they have been getting the required loads. I’m not sure on the financials of it, but the fact they’re expanding it must mean good things for it
Great review. I am a little confused on the statement about buying the ticket. Did you actually start your trip in the DRC? Did you fly the final leg to Toronto? I suspect the SSSS could be due to your flight technically originating in the DRC. I got this once on a flight from XMN-LAX, but the check did not take long. Thanks.
I did fly from DRC to Toronto. I didn’t care as much about where the journey ended as long as it included this specific flight somewhere in the process
@@eugenes5788 True, but given the full itinerary started in the DRC this would potentially flag the passenger for more security on the US bound leg from NBO-JFK.
Surely something is wrong if it is cheaper to book FIH-NBO-jfk-YYZ. Is a stopover allowed in NBO and JFK? Wouldn't a business model like Norse work better for them?

I have had the dreaded SSSS once in Berlin and once in Munich. Not anywhere else yet haha I feel like it is not random at all. Edit both times I got the SSSS I had car parts as my carryons 😂
Lol I’m sure that didn’t raise any suspicions 🤣🤣
Thanks for this video. Super helpful!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video Patrick
Thanks dawg
Great video! Thank you! ❤
Good video. I am confused on how you booked cheaply. You booking Kinshasa to Nairobi to JFK to Toronto. But you got in plane only in Nairobi and got out land side in JFK. Won’t you be blacklisted by the airline? How about checked in bags? 😊
I did book Kinshasa to Toronto and I did start in Kinshasa and plan to fly to Toronto. Just didn’t include those in the videos
Ok so for folks like me who live in US can’t get the discounted price
Depends if you're cool with a short detour to Toronto. I flew home to San Francisco later on@@mnsweeps
Thank you for flying Kenya Airways
Thank you! It was a wonderful time!
Kenyans love piling on Kenya Airways as not the best of airlines or offering the best of service. However, it's always interesting to see that foreigners love Kenya Airways.
Kenyans are very self-critical.They would shudder if they tried some other carriers on the continent. Straight up air matatus.
Saw it at JFK.. reaches same time with Emirates
Longest trans-Atlantic not trans-Pacific route
when was the vedio recorded?
Mid October. I’ve been trying to start putting that info in the caption of these videos as well
thanks mate keep them vides coming!!!
@@PatrickSheaAviation
SSSS is part of US government security process, so you will only get it flying to or from US, other countries don’t have that
Good to know
Excellent videos"
Thanks!
I prefer to avoid bulkhead seats because the TV has to be folded into the seat and you can’t use it for takeoff/landing.
Agreed. But it was the only window seat left when I booked
Thank you for another great review. I love it when people show another side of my continent cuz I’ve been asked if we even have airports 😂
Lol… I spent some time in some more interesting places on this trip to Africa, so Kenya especially felt insanely modern!
Who knows?
Yea… to be fair, packing the cargo gold is tough. Especially on full flights. So if a bag fits, it kinda has to go there
0'25" : "transpacific route to New York" : if the flight route is over the Atlantic Ocean, shouldn't it be "transatlantic route to New York" the right name?
It’s kinda weird the times that I’ve gotten the SSSS I wouldn’t have thought I was suspicious so I guess there’s a certain level of random choice
The flights take 13 hours not 14 hours
They add one hour on flight just in case if flights delays or other stuff
one question: as a business traveler, I get 2 checked bags. Is it possible to take my roll-bag and a backpack as my carry-ons? I will take these to the airport here to test for size, but as "business" do we get a little wiggle room? I am hiking Kilimanjaro and the thought of losing my luggage on 2 transfers is making me panic a bit.
Yea no that makes sense. I had no problem bringing a roller bag and back pack on board with me
Looks good thanks for the video
you said the only connection from africa to oceania is ethiopian??
where do you mean?
Qantas and South African fly to Australia (SYD and PER)
KQ is a great airline, but I wonder whether this particular aircraft is profitable on this route.
Sounds like they have been getting the required loads. I’m not sure on the financials of it, but the fact they’re expanding it must mean good things for it
Currently the only connection between Oceania and Africa is the QANTAS Sydney to Johannesburg flight.
What about maritus and perth?
Careful!!!! Didn't you know according to flat earthers that flight doesn't exist!!!! 😏
Maritus is an island... So wouldn't count as a continental connection
Ah good to know! I though Ethiopian had a 5th freedom flight but I guess not
@@mt5661 It is a connection between the African continent and Oceania. Not much of a connection but it does exist.
Thanks.
SSSS is only applicable to the flights from and to the U.S. as it’s a part of DHS messaging and passenger ranking
Shane would you try my country airline TAAG Angola airlines ???
You would think that the 787-8 being a Boeing manufacturer that the 787-8 would be fully equipped with the latest updated equipment!
Yea, although they are relatively old so they have similar equipment to other aircraft of that time at least
But it’s not, correct!
Surely something is wrong if it is cheaper to book FIH-NBO-jfk-YYZ. Is a stopover allowed in NBO and JFK? Wouldn't a business model like Norse work better for them?
Most people aren’t using the airline for routes that long, but I was able to book it with long enough connections to relax a bit
