  • How to Model Tarmac Roads
This is the first instalment in how to model a tarmac or asphalt road.
Roads are everywhere so it's vital to get them right. They are in every country (well maybe not Antarctica) and there is every colour of tarmac under the sun from jet black to almost white. With the advent of cycle lanes and junction markings, there is even green and red.
It is important to look at real photos as the image we have in our mind does not always tie into reality.
My key ingredient is craft foam. It's 2mm thick and easily found in shops like HobbyCraft - generally in the kids' section. It has the perfect texture for tarmac so the key is not to smother it.
    Materials
Craft Foam - 2mm in black or grey
Artists' acrylic paints - I used Natural and Payne's grey for the road and Tamiya Rubber Black for the dark patches
Pigments - I used Mig - Industrial City Dirt, Ashes White and Smoke Black
Matt Varnish - I used Vallejo
Scriber but the back of an X-acto knife will do
Masking tape and white PVA glue

Very brave wearing a white top when using shades of black and grey. I'd almost certainly end up with a speckled shirt. I had a modest railway layout when I was a teenager and I am now getting back to some serious modelling. Your videos will be most excellent in helping me to create what I hope will be a reasonable quality layout. Thank you.

Google street view is perfect for working out what the road surface is like in your chosen area, especially when the chosen location is several 1000's miles away. I've just been to a small midwest town without leaving my living room in the UK. Just want Google time travel now!

I'm building a Japanese bullet train/mainline station diorama and my entire source of information and inspiration has been from Google Earth and Google Maps. I love the 3D function in particular, its surprising how much detail you can get from it and you can even see the trains, albeit in a weird distorted way, but if you know what to look for you can easily work them out! The user images are also a valuable source of information. The irony is I'll have built the layout even before I finally get to visit Japan!

I'm going to try this method on my new n scale project - where I have a street with a freight branch runs down it. The branch has sidings and the track zigzags to get turnouts properly aligned. This seems a better method than using the usual plaster method. The turnouts will be tricky but I'm up for the challenge! Love the level of detail you demonstrate with colours, washes etc. and repairs. Another advanced technique to try.

Hi Kathy. Great videos and I'm learning a lot from them.
When you were pairing the foam for joining the road together, I would think putting double sided tape down below the lower piece so there is less chance of it moving, with it being so flexible. Maybe adding tape between the pieces as well prior to cutting a wavy edge

Kathy, this is a great "how-to" video - thanks for posting!! I have used foam sheets a little in the past but have not "weathered" them. I need to try this on my new layout. Have you modeled concrete roads with expansion joints? I'd be interested to see your techniques for concrete as I have a large intermodal yard to "pave". Take care, Brian.

You mentioned using a dental pick for making cracks in the surface. Here's a tip to save money on these picks: while I was at the dentist office getting my teeth cleaned one day, I mentioned to my dental technician that I used similar tools for claymation/stop motion work. We talked about it a bit, and then she volunteered to give me some of her worn out picks, and gave me about 15 different types - free. I now have a life-time supply, so don't be afraid to ask your dental tech next time you pay her/him a visit. It can take some of the pain out of the experience. Thanks for the tarmac tips.

In the UK a standard 2-lane road is almost 17.5 foot wide and will get the standard white lines down the centre (the type and size of line depends on the nature of the road and what it's top surface is). Roads narrower than this don'tget the centre lines.

  • @tsu8003

A really cheap way to make long straight roads and large car parks is to use cheap sanding belts that are generally about 100mm wide and 900mm long. You can hide any gaps with road markings etc. The good thing about sanding belts and sandpaper in general is the texture that looks like a real road and they can easily be painted too. The sanding belts I used were a dark red colour which is pretty close to the red type roads that bus lanes and such use.

Thanks a lot. I’ve used the WS pens for doing markings and you can buy similar through art shops. They do clog easily don’t they! Other than that, you can create stencils and spray/stipple the markings. They need a steady hand cutting them or a cutting machine like scanncut or cricut.

Hi there. I have just recently been looking through your channel and I must say, you do some amazing tutorials. Excellent!!! Now, this material you are using for the tarmac, is there another name for it? I don't believe I have seen it before here in Sweden. I usually use sandpaper which gives excellent results, but my issue has been the glue. I get lots of trapped air bubbles, which are a nuisance. Is there a type of glue you would recommend in gluing them down? I use wood glue or carpenters glue. I use this to glue the sandpaper unto the formboard. I am sure this has to do with the wood glue as it as too much moisture. Thanks for a great channel Kathy. BTW, your railroad looks awesome. I've always wanted to do a railroad layout but no space. So I opted for model making instead.
BTW, do you peel off the backing of the formboard?

    • @KathyMillatt
      @KathyMillatt  7 років тому +1

+tikingful Thanks! There's a lot of questions there so hopefully I can answer them all. The foam is craft foam. It's aimed at kids so you can often find it in that section of hobby shops.
If you are having problems with water in your glues then Deluxe Materials make a card glue but it is a contact adhesive so you only get one go at lining things up.
I use plain white glue for almost everything and just use bricks as weights to flatten everything out.
Model railroads take up a lot of space and I like doing dioramas too for the variety and ease as you can do them on your work bench.
      Thanks for the comments!

+tikingful I'll look you up. I have no date in mind as this is a hobby and I don't want deadlines in it. I get those at work. However, 2022 is looming so that's almost a date for some bits to be finished. I don't want it all finished as I enjoy building it.
