Washer Timer Repair

Taking an older style Whirlpool washer timer apart and cleaning the contact points. Use a small screwdriver through the hole in the back of the timer to hold the pawl back when reinstalling the cam. The white plastic on/off actuator can easily fall out and must be installed in the right direction.

Took mine apart a contractor was burnt together. Broke it apart. Cleaned with a nail file. Fixed problem.

Thank you for making this video nearly 10 years ago. My washer is from 1998 and has that same timer. Your video helped assure me that I could take that timer apart without having to be afraid of little things going flying. The contacts for the high speed on the motor were really burnt. I got it running but don't know if those contacts will last now. After bending them up enough to get at them to clean (scrape) them, I had to hook up an ohmmeter to the pins and rotate the cam and make sure they were making contact when they were supposed to. It required a bit of careful bending of the metal pieces to make sure the contacts came together. It sure would be nice to be able to just buy that set of contacts rather than a whole new timer. Everything else in there is fine, and I had that set of contacts free in my hand, like you did. It would have been so easy to just swap in a new set.

Similar to my 2000 Chevy Monte Carlo Ignition switch. Seeing old video like this the guy took it apart and cleaned all the contacts on the little piano key looking things. I do that every so often when I have issues with windshield wipers or blinkers or blower heater not Working. And of course car now starting or even shutting off randomly. Clean the contacts problem fix

Never sand the contact, it will lose the platinum layer, remove the carbon with something else.

Please add a voice over. I just took mine apart and need to look at another one to make sure I get those hooked fingers in the right place. Also I should have looked to see where the fingers ride between the high grooves on the cam spool

As an auto tech at a dealer, I would prefer audio input. Move this piece, insert here, clean contacts that leave witness marks of arcing. Ok, water under the bridge, co-worker using fowl language or worse yet, the song on the radio requires a payment because it was heard without their consent or payment of royalties. Heaven forbid, you owe the $6.42 cents. Either way, the contacts should be cleaned with 80 grit if bad, but finished with 180 grit. Dielectric grease would help contacts and moving parts. No DMM on the timer motor for ohms reading. How about the schematic and compare it the the truth table on the switch, checking for low resistance across heavy current reverse for motor or on-off pinger that all current passes thru. Silent! To bad!

This particular timer looks like you can get to the contacts once you slide out the side wall of the housing. Would it not be easier to just slide that out, but then keep the whole thing together, and then use a slim, flat jeweler's file to clean the contacts? I am about to do this job myself, so I really appreciate you showing the whole process like this. Too bad you couldn't keep the sound track, but it is still a very useful video. Thank you.

The points warp from the heat so you need to bend them back into place and you won't be able to do that if you leave them in the housing. I had sound. My radio was playing Eagles in the background and Sony Music said no way.

Funny thing, there was sound. As I was explaining it you could hear my radio in the background playing "Layla" by Eric Clapton. Sony music flagged my video so I had to remove the sound track. Good Job Sony music, you got me.

Of the Timer? 2 - 5/16" screws under the timer dial.

It won't. The problem isn't dirt. The contacts get burned from all the arcing that happens when they switch the heavy currents on and off. You have to sand or file off that burned metal.
